I'm guessing that somebody misspelled "tavern" to "tervan." And they were like, "aw Jimmy you fucked up the sign!!!" And didn't have enough money to get it fixed. Nowadays they do have enough money, but they've kept the old sign as a charming gimmick.

Sandpoint is a ski and lake resort town, sort of like Aspen though not on the same order. So the housing costs are off the charts for what you'd otherwise expect from a little Idaho town. Also Idaho in general has a problem in that it's a magnet for America's racists, and this place is no different. Surprisingly nice place to visit, though... enjoy the restaurants.
