Does anyone else notice that the three images she chose are like the three extremes of liminal spaces? You have the vivid feverish space (theatre), the bright but unsettling space (the school) and the dark and murky space (the cave). Idk if this was intentional but either its amazing, like the three monsters make up some liminal space council

Probably semi intentional. She probably wanted 3 totally different pictures to create unique characters

Once when I was in elementary school, we had this “after school” party with just my class. So we stayed after until like 9 pm, and we watched movies just as a class. We all ate pizza for dinner, and when we were done I was given the task of taking the pizza boxes down to the trash. So I had to walk down the halls of the school at night. It was weird because there were only a few lights still on. Some the the halls had a light or two on and others were pitch black. I found it really cool and creepy, but that was one of my experiences with liminal spaces

I imagine the second one being in a spooky horror game/school simulator, where in the start it's mentioned how prestigious it is, and how clean it always is. Farther into the game you get to talk to the janitor, where he tells you about he's not the one cleaning, and how "she" does it. (continuation of sara and coca-cola’s ideas!!!) i like the idea that rose had a rough home life, and had been a school girl there at one point as well; the janitor was her only friend, and maybe she passed there from sickness or something.. she then, after hours, would help the janitor clean to pay him back for being her friend! it’s an adorable idea that the janitor is like a father/grandfather (or if the janitor is a teen, an older brother) figure!!! rose guides the souls of the kids who’ve died there to the afterlife (hence the grim reaper), and maybe some stay and help clean!
I’ve always thought about the liminal spaces, but never about the potential monsters that lurk within the places. Seeing the thumbnail, those two creatures look so cool for being so creepy
@airplanes_aren.t_real

I think that ot because they are transitioning places (buildings without furniture, old malls, empty roads, general places that are made to house things and yet have nothing) so putting something alive in them kinda takes away from the experience
@kai_fatallysapphic
2 жыл бұрын
Honestly whenever I see a particularly disturbing liminal space the scariest thing for me is the possibility that there IS something lurking, but you never see it. Maybe you see movement out of the corner of your eye, or you hear faint thumping or shuffling occasionally, but that could be your under-stimulated brain playing tricks on you.
@jessicao-o165

Yeah, they do have monsters but you never really see them, one thing I like about the back rooms is that they are written like it does exist and only documents we know about these places were like scanners and survivors who escaped, like this one backroom infested with monsters but no one knows what the place looks like as no one came back from there, these backroom photos do look real and you can imagine it repeating infinitely and loneliness it’s eerie, I love this type of horror, the cold realisation, the dread, the uncertainty, the helplessness rather than boom! jumpscare!

something I always found so interesting about liminal spaces is that we can pick up on them even as children. Even before we have the vocabulary to describe what we are feeling, its there.
I feel Movie Theatre Boi on a spiritual level. Eating food scraps off the floor in the middle of the night, avoiding people, just vibin. I love him.
liminal space photos often feel “creepy” because it’s usually a place with many poeple around empty, (creating another feeling of “im not supposed to be here or odd or just wrong), an obscure and basic thing that brings a sense of naltalgia or “i know that…i think” feeling, or is just edited to be more saturated/vibrant/darker and desaturated, or just something wrong. like a picture of a balky but the sky is different colors. sometimes these are added togther and so on. i love them so much

Cube is baller, can't say the same for the sequel, nor the spin-off "Cube: Zero" Hypercube had some interesting ideas about the space becoming a tesseract instead of a normal 3D cube, and the rapid ageing or gravity traps, but they were poorly executed and missed the point of the first movie, as a psychological horror movie that studied the human psyche and how quickly peoples' trust in each other could break down, and how characters dying affects the group dynamic.
I love how well the first character blends in; I feel like I'd have to look twice to make sure my eyes weren't tricking me if I saw him

I love the monster designs! I am an AP art student, and my entire portfolio that I’m making is based on liminal spaces in my childhood. So seeing this definitely gives me more of a drive to keep going. I’ve always loved your art!
I love liminal spaces, the first one is such a goober. He definitely collects little kids’ lost toys under the seats.
the creatures are really cool, i especially love how the first one has the neon lights. i feel like the second one has a rose-like face, it’s pretty but somewhat eeire
Oh the last one is my favorite! Within the space, he looks TERRIFYING, but you're right, he has comforting guardian spirit energy. I also love the rose eye face and the dapper neon lad! These are good monsters.
im in love with all of them and i want to hang out with the movie theater one. also i like that they have 3 arms in the main sketch and it wasnt mentioned or included in the second sketch of them. so nice and comfy
Your liminal space monsters seems like if Trevor Henderson's monsters were comforting and wholesome. Your art is so cute!
Your stuff is a huge inspiration for me and seeing your ability to make characters from even the strangest concepts is incredible. Love it
You should definitely explore weirdcore/dreamcore! It has the same vibe as liminal spaces ^^
The last one seems very warm and loyal he also seems to demand respect
this is random but i love the way you’ve done the thumbnail- swapping the two characters around really makes it pop and the colors go together so well
Oooh the way you put the left fold on top of the right for third character! It's a nice touch to the character since it would be that way for a dead person. I don't know if it applies for other japanese traditional wear besides a kimono and yukata, but it adds that touch of that thing not being human, or a ghost.
@highshipper9222
2 жыл бұрын
The kimono for the dead is folded right over left
This whole concept of characters and liminal spaces has a name and a classification. Depending on the moods, they are either dreamcore or weirdcore, but there are many sub-classifications under those too, such as kidcore and nostalgiacore.
I loveeeeee the movie theater one! I think it's so cute that he scurries around eating popcorn and M&Ms. Its 3 hands are so cute!
the theatre creature seems like such a sweet guy actually all of them seem kinda sweet they seem like the kind of people who would get lonely and then start a book club idk
Oh my gosh i love the movie theater one~! i can imagine a scene where maybe a child drops some popcorn and notices that it disappears/isn’t on the floor anymore, so they look closer and can kinda see it hiding in the shadows eating the popcorn
Liminal spaces always give me a feeling of nostalgia and like I've been there or even that it appeared in my dreams when it never happened. The pool, arcade and movie theatre ones are the ones that trigger this feeling the most. The movie theatre one you included in here actually triggered it and with the adorable little creature design you make with it looks amazing! I wanna do one of these someday when I have enough creativity!
all of them look soo sweet instead of scary, it gives me a sad feeling for them idk why😭❤
the first one feels like it’d be hiding under the back row of theater seats and snatched your mild duds the second one seems like it’d help you get your grades up the last one seems like you shouldn’t be there, although nobody told you you shouldn’t
When I went to school, I used to fantasize about living in one. Time is fleeting, and it seemed to pass slower there, so I liked it.
11:55 Honestly SO many liminal spaces give a creepy yet comforting look that reflecting the feeling in a character is extremely on the nose
OMG I love how you did all of the characters/creatures they are all freaky and adorable!
I like to think the theater guy makes tentative friends with the employees who clean up after movies
This is so dreamcore :dreamcore or weirdcore is basically nostalgic or weird. It feels creepy and comforting at the same time
I really love the 1st and 3rd, kinds eerie but also harmless. The 2nd one felt a bit too disjointed to me. I like the janitor Spector idea but the uniform and grim reaper elements just didn’t click for me. But I hope you do more of these in the future!

All of these feel so friendly to me. Perhaps it's just my romanticized viewpoint on all creature designs, but I can't help but imagine a cute little hang-out scene with all of them being a wholesome little friend group. :>>>
I've always loved characters that have some sort of object in place of a head or face, especially when the entire head shape is changed. It's just so surreal to me, and thats the exact same feeling I get when looking at liminal spaces. There's just something so otherworldly and hauntingly beautiful about them both. These were all so cool, keep up the amazing work

Absolutely all of my OCS have an object or similar for a face.

an example of this that I really like is characters with a security camera for a head

@@gabrielhenson5751 oo that's really cool, I don't think I've ever seen that before. I really like those old school box tvs, cardboard boxes, and paper bags as heads. Also a character that just has a huge eyeball as a head. I've seen it like twice and it's my favorite thing ever lol
You're giving your characters cozy vibes because you have so much of that I think
I want to hug 1st one. i can relate to eating candy of the floor and scuttling around
2:44 another thing you can do to add a glow is to use a color dodge layer and go over with an airbrush it looks real crisp (you can also use it to draw attraction to a certain area in your art piece)
Some name ideas, even though there's no suggestion prompt I want to :) All of these are based off from the term 'liminal' in liminal spaces, like a gateway or a doorway, some place you pass through but don't stay. The first one could be Janus, and while , in Roman myths, he is the God of gateways and passages I read something about him being the 'God of Frames' , kinda like movie frames. It's a Percy, as a nickname for Perseverance. I've got a few janitors in my family and we do not respect them nearly as much as we should as a populous, they are very resilient. Anyways, it also fits with the theme, 'to continue doing something' no matter what. In this case continue living, remaining, and cleaning at this school. Finally, Seishi. The name Seishi is from Japan and means different things based off the Kanji used, two of which are 'arrive' and 'sacred'. The gate in the image I believe is a Torii gate which is a symbol or marker for a sacred territory. The 'arrive' is in reference to arriving somewhere and never leaving. If I need to be corrected, please reply, I've only done quick research for this and therefore is not entirely reliable.
these spaces always have vibes and i loved watching you capture some, i get similar feelings at dusk when all the crepuscular animals come out.
I love liminal spaces because they feel like a place that is odd but not evil, and these characters perfectly represent that! They express a weird feeling but they don't seem mean or harmful. Amazing video and art
Could you try drawing monsters from the backrooms? I think it would look really cool, and I would be exited to see what designs you come up for the creatures! :)

Thats what I was thinking
I enter a liminal space pretty often, I play volleyball and we usually have practice at night when no students are in the school so when we walk through the hallways and big empty rooms with no students it feels like a liminal space (theres also a janitor that lives in the school haha)
I really love the characters/creatures it’s very creative and they all hit the Liminal vibe I think places like that are quite cryptic and I love it 🖤
Oml u have no idea how much i love u just bc of this video im obsessed with weirdcore/dreamcore
Really cool designs! I LOVE how they each fit into the liminal spaces they respectively occupy. I really like the cave guardian but I think I like the movie theater cryptid the most? They just vibed the most with me 😎
My favorite liminal space monster of the 3 you drew is the Movie Theater liminal space monster. The way his face is red neon squares is just the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! If that thing was chasing me, I’d be mesmerized, but running away haha. And the pink school hallway one is really nice. The cave looking one is really spooky, especially with the rugged clothing he has. Honestly, your designs for these three liminal space monsters are awesome! Again, the movie theater one is my favorite of the two due to the neon colors and the red neon squares for the face. Amazing job LavenderTowne! I always love the art you do, so keep on being amazing with your art talent! I hope that your Friday, and your weekend goes well ❤️
I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see you upload. This is my comfort channel whenever I’m feeling down, and I really needed this now
So close to being scary and then you have the last monster knitting 🥺 HOW COULD I NOT LOVE HIM
I absolutely love this. I am definitely going to be doing some of these myself. I like the idea of these being the only creatures that ‘live’ in these spaces. Them being the vague representation of a humanoid shape makes them much more eerie, especially the first one
this is perfect! I was just getting into the concept of liminal space..it’s so interesting
I really love the designs! To me, they emulate the experience of a liminal space perfectly; initially scary or unnerving, but slowly becomes comforting. I wanna be friends with them, they all seem very sweet
i love liminal spaces! its so hard to find any content on liminal, “dreamcore” or “weirdcore” anything-! theyre big comforts for me so its nice to see a video like this (+ i love the character designs and your videos in general)
I can’t wait until this starts it looks very interesting
I was literally just going through a bunch of liminal space images!! I love them, they're so eerie yet comforting
I love this concept- it reminds me of drawing class in college & the three-day exploration of “negative space”, like it’s fun to explore what DOESN’T fill the space just as much as what does. Thank you for these ‘make you think’ add-ons, @LavenderTowne! Love your work! 💜
Your videos are the reason I got into drawing again. I would take your ideas of like turning people into things but I wouldn’t copy your design, instead I would make my own design and it was really fun. Thanks for making me get back into what used to be my fav thing❤

kinda same actually. due to her i draw digitally quite often now.
you should draw actual backrooms monsters in your style! :D that would be really cool and creepy
Honestly this is such a cool and unique idea and I think all of the creatures give me some sort of weird primal comfort
I ADORE YOUR CHARACTER DESIGNS SO MUCH!!! Your art gives me so much joy, thank you!
Watching your videos makes my day so much better. I absolutely love your style and the characters you make.
Ngl they’re all quite interesting, I like the concept for the school rose character, *no doubt there name is rose,* and the last one literally just gives me Chinese vibes, but my most favorite cryptid is the theater tv head
Keep it up, your art really inspires me a ton and you’re what got me back into art Thank you!
Man these videos and Lavendertowne in general is such a huge inspiration
I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS!!! why do i think all of em look so adorable-
