    This video saved my butt. For me, having to sand off the limewash before applying a new color is a non-starter. I do change my mind (often) and that would've been a nightmare to deal with. Second, the fact that you cannot stop and take a break is a huge issue for me. I'm disabled and need frequent breaks. My body is the boss and when it says, "Rest," I do it. Despite that limitation, I've managed to hand trowel concrete feather finish onto walls, put brick tiles on a wall, paint MANY rooms by myself, and remove wall texture with joint compound. It takes me a long time to do it, but I always get there eventually. But if I force it, I'll be finished and the job will never be done. The only way it works is if I honor my limitations. I know I can pull off a faux limewash look with matte paint without too much trouble. Guess I got my answer! Thank you for saving me from a truly hellish mistake! I'm more grateful than you know. Realistic people like you make my world possible.

    I went through that much work bc I had to correct my mistakes from choosing a bad product and a company that wasn’t able to give me the support I needed. Had I gone with Portola paints in the first place I would have saved myself a lot of time, effort and stress. Portolas paint would have just required primer and two coats of their paint. It work beautifully on the first try.

    That was my exact feeling while watching her paint. I have done faux finishing for 3 decades now, and as with colorwashing (water based latex paints) you must mottle the paint out, as far as it allows you based on the amount of product you are putting on your brush, finishing with a "wet edge".

    Could the primer be deluded with water. And what’s your thoughts about faux lime wash technique? Cuz I understand limewash is very powdery and easily comes off. Cuz the faux limewash is more technical. Also the company used in videos I’ve seen is outta Germany.

    So when you said the Limewash soaks into porous surfaces, why is it that it’s supposed to go down on a non porous latex paint? Latex paint is like rubber. Isn’t a flat paint wetted down with a wet sponge better ? I’m just trying to understand it all. Thanks for the informative video, and your reply!!

    It’s suggested to use a mineral based primer prior to using lime wash paint bc that gives the lime wash something to soak into.

    I’ve never used that brand but a rep at Portola suggested that I try using a spray bottle with water to help keep it moist as I went. That helped me. You can’t use too much though or you will get drip marks. It’s definitely not easy. I would try reaching out to that brand and asking for tips or watching their specific videos online since it seems each brand does things a little differently.

    Hmmm not everything that’s stated here is true about this technique… you can repaint over lime wash, just using primer and then paint… you do not have to sand. Also, the lighting of the room will greatly impact the color outcome of the lime, I figured this out through error myself. Must take into consideration the cardinal directions and the sun coming in for lime. Dark rooms go with dark colors well lit rooms you would really want to do lighter colors, darker will not show up the way you are anticipating in well lit rooms. There is a science to the reflection in the lime indeed. Not a Fun job but beautiful in the end, especially for old plaster walls, absolutely gorgeous!

  • @bearteastudios

    @bearteastudios

    Thanks for the tip about repainting, everything I’ve heard and read about Limewash says the opposite that the Limewash will seep through regular latex paint. I’m absolutely willing to try it the easy way you say works before doing something as time consuming as sanding it though. The lighting was not the issue in my specific case (although I’m sure that’s true since it’s true for all paint colors in general) In the product photos the first color I used looked like a light brown watercolor. In my walls it looked like sloppy brown paint, there was little to know depth/color variation like velvet which is the whole point of lime wash. My bedroom is small but it has a large window that lets in lots of light. I thought the result may have been user error and I’m sure it was at least partially but the second companies lime wash turned out like it was supposed to.

    That paint didn't look like lime wash. It looked like thinned acrylic with lime in it. I suspect to get an authentic look you just have to mix real limewash yourself. That's what I opted to do. I've got the lime putty aging as we speak so we'll know in a few months if that was the way to go lol. It's more work, but on the plus side it's super super cheap. It's kind of funny how pre mixed lime paints are so expensive now when lime used to be associated with poverty.

    That’s how it always goes right? Eating lobster used to be good for fishermen now it’s the most expensive thing on the menu. Being thin and tan also used to be a sign that you worked outside and were there for poor. Being fluffy and pale was the side red look of aristocracy b cut meant you were well fed and didn’t work outside. Mixing your own lime is a great idea! I would love to know how it turned out!

    actually, you are only to blame... they made it clear that without sampling it's a no go. Out of luck, your fault that time is un-permitting for you to do samples cause you make your priorities everyone else's hence the reply that you need samples to properly see how the wash adheres to your given substrate which is basically some other paint that you know not precisely about (nor anyone, hence sampling) Good try to again make your problem an excuse!

    Jesus, do you secretly work for the first company? lol If not they should hire you. I watched all the videos that existed online before starting this project. The company also didn’t provide any further help besides telling me to sample. You should also sample latex paint, but that isn’t the only solution that exists for a quality paint job. They are literally in the Limewash business. The second company was much more helpful and attentive. Thanks for the comment! 🥰
