Lime in Rum & Coke? Why I never do that!

Should you put Lime in a Rum & Coke? I got asked that question, do I like Lime in my Rum & Coke (aka the Cuba Libre Cocktail). I thought I did... Until I tried this experiment! The Rum and Coke Recipe is really simple, you just find the best rum for rum and coke then work out whether you need Lime or not. Of course the Cuba libre would be with Lime.

This video was quite insightful. Over here in Mexico, a "Cuba" (short for Cuba Libre) IS a rum & Coke -to be even more precise, it's quite often Bacardi Carta Blanca & Coke, at times cut with some fizzy water. It is as common to us as a Jack & Coke in the States, if not more, and quite the obstacle when I try to use the original Cuba Libre recipe vs. rum & Coke to explain what I perceive as a difference in cocktails and highballs (not a discussion I wish to elaborate on, simply a matter of perspective: to me a drink where you simply say the ingredients isn't a cocktail), since almost never do people drink or enjoy their "Cuba" with lime -even when they believe the Coke to be overwhelming and have to cut it as previously mentioned. Maybe the secret is initially presenting a variety of rums. Fantastic work on a topic I'd not expect to provide a whole video worth of content! Cheers, Steve.

I immediately had two thoughts: 1. If you don't measure your lime juice, you have no idea if you'd like it with a little more or less because... you have no accurate way to measure how much you've added. 2. This is actually a VERY accurate "real world test" because inaccurately measuring your lime juice is what most people are doing to do. Most people don't have time for all the BS that cocktail nerds like myself get off on and they just want a nice drink without too much fuss. I apologize for my initial stuffy "you're doing it wrong" attitude. Great video, keep up the good work! PS, I live in SUPER liberal Washington State USA (liquor taxes here are absolutely insane!) and I envy not only your rum collection but the prices you pay for so many rums. Cheers 🥂

That pusser's spiced is intriguing, we don't get that in the states as of yet, particularly not in the high proof. The chairman's spiced is pretty rare here. The spiced I am currently most fond of is the Don Q, but that is just as a spiced rum, I don't drink a lot of RnC speaking generally, much more Ginger Ale/Beer and the fairly dry fevertrees are my favorite. The Don Q Oak Barrel is definitely a drier lighter spiced rum than a lot, you might enjoy it if it is in the UK.

Cheers Gil. Cheers for watching. Chairmans Gunpowder Spiced is a UK only product, so you won’t have that, unless someone’s brought back a few stray bottles from the UK. They used to have a Global 40% (80 proof) Spiced, but that’s long gone. Also, just a point. It’s great to have you here and commenting…and sharing knowledge. I’ve seen a few of your other replies over the last few days. But Don’t automatically assume you are correct with everything you say. You’ll have an opinion, but it may not be a universally shared opinion. We’ve trained a fair few Rum Geeks to see the wider picture in Rum. Cos that’s a problem that many Rum Lovers have. They’re totally blinkered and don’t understand what the “global Rum market” is doing. So while I do massively appreciate your opinions, please do not put others down. This is my community and if I have to delete and block (which I’ve done many times) I will do. But I’d rather have you here sharing knowledge, but being friendly and listening to other opinions. You just have to realise while your 300+ Rum collection may sound cool, i’m actually more impressed by the people just starting out and willing to try new stuff. Cheers 👍

I think you're using too much lime? I make it with 1.5oz rum, 6oz coke, 1 teaspoon lime juice, and I've tried it with and without the lime juice and I much prefer it with the lime. Your mixture looks smaller in volume but getting a similar amount of lime juice. I've tested with Plantation Three Star and Flor de Cana 4 extra dry, not a lot of rums, and not Cuban rum, but yeah, I much prefer with just a little bit of lime juice than without

Maybe... but a wedge is only going to be circa 5ml anyway. If you say 1 lime gives you 15-20ml on average (unless i get a really juicy one which will be close to 25ml) but 1 wedge is 1/6th of a lime. So if i get say 25ml max, then you're actually talking less than 5ml from a Wedge. And a Teaspoon would be 5ml.
