Limbourg Brothers - October - Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry

In the illuminated page of the month of October - a 15th-century work by the Limbourg Brothers, part of the famous Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry - the lunette above has the task of depicting the zodiac signs of the month, in a harmonious correspondence between the celestial world and the terrestrial world, illustrated below. The sun chariot - the tutelary star of the entire calendar - transits the October sky, accompanied by the signs of the month, the outgoing sign of Libra and the incoming sign of Scorpio. The scene below is dominated by the grandeur of the Château du Louvre, the royal residence of the Duke of Berry's brother, King Charles V, a tangible symbol of the prestige and power of the kings of France and his lineage. In the foreground it is now late autumn and the fields are being sown for the new year. In perfect concordance with the sign of Scorpio - which seems to be oriented towards the activities of farmers - the seasonal symbolism is precisely that of sowing and resting the fields. In this way the death-life antithesis is expressed: the seed must face death before bearing fruit and germinating in the new season.
