Some people have commented on how he can talk. I'm absolutely grateful for this guy. He's talkin to the camera guy like he would be teaching his kid. He explained absolutely everything one needs to know about setting it up, porting, desired numbers. I've watched 50 videos from other porting channels and everybody seems to guard their secrets like it's a pile of gold. I personally have a machine shop and I've built and timed quite a few 4 stroke car engines. So none of this flies over my head, but there are a lot of nuances that only someone that does these all the time will know, and he's sharing it. I'm not wanting to build race saws, I just want to build some good reliable work saws that perform well and I don't have to worry about them blowing up. Excellent video. If I could give it 10 thumbs up, I would!

I always love watching a true professional at work! (Just like you Jacob!) That we got to do it with John’s explanations was a great bonus and very generous of him. Only 3hrs! Give us 3 more!!! Thanks guys.

I am one of the 6 he was talking about. Haha At the machine shop I worked at we had a flow bench for porting heads. The reason you want dimples on the intake is the air is being pulled in and by having the dimpled surface it actually does the opposite of what you would think. It allows the air to glide across the surface as it is pulled through the port. It smooths out the disturbances from symmetrical differences in the port by having the negative space below the high points. You can kinda think of it like a shock in a car. But also having less surface area the air actually touches as it is pulled through the port. So less drag it has while it is moving giving more flow/air to the cylinder. In higher end performance cars they do the same to the under belly of the car to reduce drag. The reason the exhaust port is polished is because the air needs to be forced out as quickly as possible it does not have time to let velocity help aid the removal. Having dimples on the back side would actually temporarily slow the exhaust gas coming out not allowing all of the waste to be expelled quick enough before port or valve closes. We are talking na machines here. I have never tested a rough surface on exhaust port while running a turbo charger. They have back some back pressure that comes along with them. May aid velocity to give its benefits of quicker than a polished port. Key word may... Have never heard of anyone running simulations on a flow bench to test the possibility for added benefits. Butt would not apply here. Thanks again. I will need to watch this another 4 times this week to absorb all the things. ;)

As a climber we all know the ms 200t is a legend and still the best climbing saw ever created but this one here that you guys just built is so awesome! Ty for sharing that! I've done 4 Stoke motor cycle head's for years and we all have our favorite bit's.When they clog or go dull it's part of the oh no moment. Love w.d.40 for clearing chips and final finish. Always wanted to look over someone's shoulder on a 2 stroke. He was very clear on the dos and don't and why. Also love the foot pedal to adjust rpm and quick change handle. You both rock this video and thanks!!

I cringed a little with the water balloon analogy as fluids cannot be compressed. Not claiming I know anything about porting an engine or fluid dynamics for that matter.

It’s possible to put the same volume of water in a smaller space being heated & pressured! Heat will change the H20 molecule and being that a balloon 🎈 stretches being that it’s rubber! It’s possible Something that does not stretch could possibly hold that same amount with pressure behind it in a smaller space. Thus creating more compression which if released dramatically produces more energy thus creating more power! Energy=Power! We all learn something new everyday. Not the perfect analogy but we all understood what he was implying but some of us think outside the box. Lol cheers oh that space that’s smaller is very very minimal. Just like a cylinder when creating a smaller space with the same amount of internal mass present while outer mass is shrunk around it! Creates more pressure just like a stroker motor! 382 as a example! Again cheers 🥂 everyone!

Dude! Just seeing this and it’s freaking great… I was climbing the the 80’s and 90’s and was a poor WV kid with my homelite and Mac’s and my first real boss got me my 015 and 020 and 026 …. Now at 53 it’s building saw’s and flopping over and busting up the bigger ones… awesome sauce!!!! …. I’m super stoked that one of my favorite modern climber-dudes who I really like to catch his videos!!! “tube-guy’s” is going to have a fantastic saw from one of my favorite tube-builder’s!”… the “Cocky young buck!!!” I love how he drives other builder’s to …”shut it!”!!! LMFFAO’!!! This is fantastic!!!! Love both of you guys channels and work!!!!

I have watched a lot of porting videos, but this was the best, I have been wanting to port my 201tc and this was what I needed.

Great video, and thanks for the memories. I'm 72, and my Dad's machine shop was my day care. I was running a Clausing 13" lathe by the time I was 8 years old. I retired and sold the building two years ago, the new owner had no clue of what to do with the machine shop. The lathe sold for $500, $300 for the Bridgeport mill. Eight 30-yard dumpsters of metal and tooling went down the road. I'm still crying.

That's your own fault. If you sold the building as a machine shop, you should have sold to a machinist. If you sold it as a building, you should have sold all the equipment yourself. Or you left so much old worn out tooling and tiny scraps they said screw it and scrapped it because they had newer better stuff to replace it....

I'm 73 and crying with you. I've wanted those machines since high school machine shop, but never found $$

I won't be doing this myself and STILL FASCINATING. Watched the entire film, so cool to watch a professional. You never realize how specialized your work is until you have to explain to someone else!

Gonna put dozens of hours into porting a saw so that I can speed up my firewood efforts by 3 minutes LOL. Great video, really goes to show how a lifetime of learning can make something so complicated look so easy.

I just started to get into gas powered chain saws since a friend bought a new Stihl.He taught me so much in a short time that now I want to know more .Thank you for your spirit and desire to pursuehaving the best tools avaliable and the best team menbers to make the day go by stress-free .Great video .2 stroke engines were never a part of my experience as a youngen. Today I learned a lot .

Super Cool ....intake roughness...square out ports... Polish technics on exhaust... Fine grindings are abrasive and dont wipe off well in my anion.....I take distilled water with dawn dish soap and boil head an vigorously srcub with stiff plastic brushs to get all the fine grindings out and boil in clean distilled water...blow dry and spray head down with wd-40....Im a amateur..5 years silver Stihl Tech. Thanks Again , Great Video 😎

I've been working on cars and trucks most of my 40 years but I only recently got into two strokes during covid ...... In that time I acquired 8 chainsaws and one was an 088 that needed a cylinder. I bought a new cylinder and piston which was the new style muffler so I welded up a two-stroke muffler from a dirt bike from a video I saw I also Port matched the exhaust port to the muffler and did a little bit of porting in the cylinder from another video I saw but I wish I had found your videos first. Thank you for the information you share, it's cool that you pass it on the way the gentleman who taught you did.

An amazing education... Its always great to see Great American's passing on their trade/craft. Definitely not boring... Always enjoy!

That was awesome! Long, sure but needed because of the details. John does a great job of explaining the why as well as the what. That really helps better understand how porting improves performance. A good follow-up to this type of video would be a tour of how Stihl makes the top end. The science in that process would probably make this video look like a walk in the park. Great video Jacob! And at the end of the day to guys like me it all that matters is that I can cut 100 plus’s trees a day and the beast keeps on going. I doubt I'll ever get a ported saw. I know for sure I will never port one myself. I hardly understand most of what John was saying or doing, though I was tracking pretty good. I absolutely enjoyed the video though. I figured a ported saw just had a few mods on it. I had no idea it was that thorough of an operation. Aside from great education, it is such a privilege to watch a professional do his craft. Great job.

1:04:30, now I understand who I heard snoring earlier in the video :) Was already checking on my own cats.

Used to do carbs for VW‘s. Put brass screen sandwiched at the base gasket to enhance atomization. It was called a bug spray carb.

This was probably the most interesting hour and 16 minutes of the day

A sheet of window glass is a very good “Flat Lap” surface and it’s very flat, cheap and easy to find… I do them by hand myself with holes cut out of boards that I’ve cut…. 😂👍. I’m actually laughing my ass off… I think this is one of the nicest and most humble I’ve ever seen John by in one of his videos… Respect for Treason!!! LMFFAO!!! Very very cool guy’s!!! And two cool guys!!!

Pirting my first saw took me three full evenings; hyper-cautious, I would cut a few thousandths off of a port and then clean & reassemble. Then disassemble and grind some more.

Another awesome video. I always get excited to see a video of yours go live. Nothing like watching a master at work. The length of the video doesn't matter when the content is that good.

Good info my friends and great job ,and thank you both for sharing what you have because it has helped me out alot.now I'm going to tear down my 200t and rebuilding it.but I'm not porting mine,just new seals and and lines.

Like you said. Very few will watch and learn. I will never probably port a chainsaw. I rarely even use one. But seeing you and watching the knowledge and passion I decided to stay and learn anyway. Props to u bud

Really awesome video. It's cool too see a guy share his knowledge on porting not to many guys do that. And it's even better to see a saw built that is going to be working not reving 15000 rpm with no torque.

Right on the money... I have seen em built for top end and they will scream high RPMs but they fall flat on their face in a cut... respect that you get what I was after thats pretty cool 💯

@@jaythe306snowmexican 201s have such small carbs its hard to get any extra out of them without starving for fuel.. and they have a "chute" style lower transfer that sticks down and they can't be decked on a lathe... would need a milling setup... so I just do a mild timing advance and "dirty up" the strato intake if you know what I mean... and a muffler mod... they are a tough one... the newer ones do have domed pistons and they run a bit better... I hate to say it but the climbing saws will probably be all battery powered pretty soon... I ran Jacob's husky 540 battery powered saw and was very impressed... no idea on battery life or price etc but power was awesome

You’re really limited on what you can do in a smaller consumer-grade clamshell-style Stihl which doesn’t have a bas gasket to delete or flange to turn. If you haven’t done so already, open up the muffler and advance the timing 8 degrees along with a switch to 91+ octane fuel. That will get you 75% of the gains of a full porting job on that saw without having to tear it down very far.

No interest in doing this myself. Just love watching all you guys get together. John’s absolutely right, Instagram is a different breed and has a great community on it.

Would definitely recommend a DRO for the lathe, it makes such a difference 👌
