Phonecia was actually an unseen character in the Ernestine skits and she always pissed Ernestine off, that's why I'm surprised she chose her as a love interest!

To think that a character from either before I was born or shortly after, poodle skirt and 50's / 60's hairdo, all that, has, like the real access comedian, gone through so much change in technology and social life -- enough to dare to take a stand with her character now -- wow. She could not have done that in the late 60's and early 70's, or even the 80's and 90's, without severe backlash. now, well, some will still be upset, but Lily and Earestine (and Phoenicia) can take a stand. I/m impressed. We/re seeing a return to how phobic it was when I was growing up, from some people, while others are more tolerant. (But acceptance, rather than tolerance, would be better.0 There is still such a long way to go.

Phonecia was actually played by Barbara Feldon (Get Smart), in a skit with Ernestine on Laugh In. However, Phonecia is attracted to the Dick Martin, character and they leave together. It's on youtube.

I'll bet if one had the opportunity to do so, watching tapes of Don Knotts performing as "Barney Fife" in his 70s wouldn't have been the same as when Knotts was in his 30s.

I'm glad (not "GLAAD") you are more concerned with the performance than the politics. I am too. But aging is a factor in performance. Sometimes it is not possible to maintain the same level of excellence in interpretive performance as when younger. For example, Aretha Franklin may no longer hit those higher notes (even after quitting smoking) that she could at the peak of her singing ability. Or, as Cher put it, "Getting old sucks."

And we already know Lucille Ball couldn't maintain that higher-pitched vocal inflection of "Lucy Ricardo" by the time of Ball's last long-running series, "Here's Lucy." As "Lucy Carter," Ball's speaking vocal range was closer to Bea Arthur's "Maude Findlay" than to "Lucy Ricardo," even though Ball was still essentially performing the same "Lucy" character over four TV series' (five, if you count "The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show" a/k/a "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour"as a separate series).

@@WytZox1 Yeah it was the cigarettes. It happened to me and many rock stars etc giving us a deeper voice and not the same. Another point to make... When you haven't sung high tone songs for awhile.. Your voice looses it to. Surely same with speaking.
