Lila Downs Interview and Performance at Democracy Now!

“If we don’t fight for the children, what will become of us?” That is the question posed by the acclaimed Mexican singer Lila Downs in her stirring new cover of Manu Chau’s classic song “Clandestino.” In the video for the song, Lila Downs features images of U.S. detention centers holding migrants who had crossed the border. The song is one of many highlights on Downs’s new album-her ninth-titled “Al Chile,” which she recorded in Mexico City, Brooklyn, Oaxaca (where she was born) and even on a farm in Juchitán. Lila Downs is a six-time Grammy Award-winning singer and she joins us to perform and talk about her new album.

Lila, you are so graceful and wise the way you respond to politically loaded questions with answers about love, understanding, and togetherness. As time goes on, you become more beautiful to me with a light that shines from within. Tambien, your music inspires and moves me as much if not more than the music of the greatest singers and writers ever.

2:50 Amy asked her to translate on the fly, but is kinda difficult. Here's what the song says Solo voy con mi pena = Alone I go with my sorrow Sola va mi condena = Alone goes my damnation Correr es mi destino = I am destined to run (or "to run is my fate") Por no llevar papel = Because I carry no papers

corduroy99 I wanted to translate all of Lila's songs, but couldn't understand each word (audio issues), so thank you for translating one of the most important parts. "Campesino" made me tear up a bit, but that's the deep reach of the beauty and majesty of music, and why it's the universal language. Lila's rendition of Nora Jones song reminded me of Linda Ronstadt's songs on "Canciones de Mi Padre," and how beautiful it is. CD came with translations. (Miss my lost CD; prefer to streaming devices.) Thanks again and God bless.

@@GladysAlicea Hi Gladys, you are very welcome. But the song is not hers, it is Manu Chao's. The song is called Clandestino. Lila does it more cumbia, Manu's version is more of a lullaby check it out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2SEzNeJpZqeorQ.html

Thank you for this Amy! I've always dug your taste in music, but more importantly, the musicians you put on that have something to say. I saw Lila Downs here back in 2010 (or earlier) and later opened for her at The Bakersfield Jazz Festival. Found that an old colleague was singing backup for her and it felt like a small world. Now Lila is singing about "clandestinos" aka 'illegals' and the subject cannot hit home more. I've always has a soft spot in my heart for undocumented immigrants, growing up among so many in Central California, but while I try to emigrate to UK in the midst of the Brexit era, this song has never felt more poignant Please keep on keeping on Amy. You're one of the best and we need you now more than ever!

Wonderful episode. I could imagine Lila singing on The DC Mall, but not in this @WhiteHouse; aside from obvious issues, the only Spanish word @VP knows is "hola." Her words negating constant self-involvement in world politics struck a personal chord, as I'm mostly confined to bed and became Trump- and world-consumed since he went down that escalator. Thank you for the wise words, Lila. God bless.
