Ultimately it is the jury who will decide what part of his testimony is lies or truth. Jury members may decide that each "I don't recall" is a lie and use that in judging other testimony or they may decide he is being truthful. Just a a matter of procedure, the prosecution MUST ask the questions in order for the jury to hear the testimony. They can't just read the transcripts of his prior police interviews to the jury. Additionally, the prosector does not know how he will answer to any particular question. No lawyer just gives up because a witness is difficult.

They keep running the same playbook, and when they review the case they will find that the defense is working extra hard to make this trial as costly as possible. This is one of those prosecutors who make you hate them so much, you start to root for the defense. How is it legal for the state and judge to intimidate and coerce a witness so open and obviously. Finding out what was said in that secret exparte hearing justifies why Mr Steel was so upset.
