Like The Dawn - The Oh Hello's

Original music written, composed, performed, recorded, and produced by The Oh Hello's.
I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first
he'd put me deep, deep under so that he could work
and like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook
I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you
at last, at last
bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last
you were the brightest shade of sun I had ever seen
your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest kings
and like the dawn you woke the world inside of me
you were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you
and you will surely be the death of me
but how could I have known?

“Bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last...” if that isn’t the most perfect expression of how it feels to meet a soulmate, romantic or otherwise. Chills.

They actually took that phrase straight out of the Bible, Genisis 2:23 when Adam first saw Eve. The whole song is actually about Adam and Eve 💜

The best religious songs don't present themselves as religious. When religion isn't the focus, but the addition, that's when it works. Everyone has SOMETHING they believe in. Science, God, nature, family, love... whatever it may be, it's connected by having faith in something.

This is about Adam meeting Eve for the first time, isn't it? "I was asleep in the garden when I saw you first, He put me deep under so He could work." God put Adam in deep sleep, took a rib from Adam and made Eve. This is such a cute take in the story.

This is second hand so feel free to double check, but the Hebrew word used in the book of genesis, when used in other parts of the Bible, is translated as side, rather than rib. So it may be, that God split Adam down the middle in a physical and or metaphorical sense, and fashioned half of him into Eve.

This is a phenomenal song. I know a lot of people are comparing it to Adam and Eve, but I wanted to note that there's almost a parallel between Christ and the Church--Jesus' side was stabbed while he was on the cross, and from his sacrifice, the Church was created, just like Eve was taken from Adam. And the line "You will surely be the death of me" really applies to Jesus and the Church too because he had to die for us!!!! I LOVE THIS SONG

  • @shanewalsh620

    @shanewalsh620

Omg i hadn't really thought about those parallels, i specialy notice that Jesus got stabbed, i think it isn't clear exactly where (they only say it was on a side) but it looks like if it was on a rib or somewhere nearby i can see some kind of symbolism there. God made Eve out of Adan's rib and his son got stabbed around that area.

To me, this song describes the frailty of human love as it was experienced in the very first human relationship - and every one after that. Our beloved appears as the brightest shade of sunlight we've ever seen. We come alive at the delight of intimacy with someone made of the same stuff that we are. Finally, thank God, we are not alone in our being. Then, in most relationships, there is the painful separation, the fall from grace that follows. That line, 'And you will surely be the death of me, but how could I have known?' - that sends shivers up my spine. It's the saddest musical moment I think I've ever experienced. We've all felt the death of intimacy and the disappointment of taking our beloved down from the pedestal. The Adam and Eve story is an archetype - and this song is so powerful - because it flows through every one of us like blood. But that's why we need music like this - to give us the greater comfort of knowing that we all share this struggle for companionship and wholeness.

Yes, the spouse will be the death of your current self. But you'll find new life in that union that's greater than anything you could have known alone.

I sobbed so desperately when I heard it in my first trimester. “I’ve been so worried, you’ve been so still...” Pregnancy has changed my perspective a lot.

AutoNyms the bible is suppose to be taken literally. And also god made Eve with the rib of Adam because he wanted woman to be made from man. There isn't another account of creation in Genesis i can assure you of that. And we just look at the bible and picked out the stuff we wanted to take literal and the stuff we dont, then we aren't really listening to Gods word. Everything in the bible is suppose to be taken literal, even if we dont it to be.

I just realized that this song is about Adam and Eve and it's so cool! The garden is the garden of Eden. After God created Adam, He put him under a deep sleep while He removed his rib and made Eve from it. ("He put me deep, deep under so that he could work"-see Genesis 2:21.) When Adam saw Eve, he said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man" (Genesis 2:23). And then Eve ended up being the death of Adam because she ate the fruit and they were cast out and became mortal. Now when I listen to this song I find it even more beautiful because of the extra meaning.

I imagine this song to be sung by a woman who just lost the love of her life to war. They lived together in a cottage with their baby and used to sing together happily every day until he was drafted. His best friend was the one who delivered the news. She could never be complete again. She's describing him in past tense because he's no longer alive. "You were the brightest shade of sun I'd ever seen. Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest king." I imagine her singing this while sitting down in the fields. When she fell asleep, she dreamt of seeing him again and they talked. "Well I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first" "At last... and you are trying to be the death of me?" "But how could I have known.." Then the guitar solo is just them dancing for the very last time. "I was dreaming in the garden" Even if he was just in her head, she's glad to be able to see him again.

I know this is a biblical song but when I first heard it all I could think about was my fiancée. We’re 5 months out from our queer handfasting day, been together for just over three years. The first time we kissed was definitely an “at last” moment for me. Finally the perfect person for me. She’s everything I ever wanted in a partner and whenever I see her this song pops in my head.

I didn't really think about it until now but in the beginning the story of Adam and Eve is kind of romantic. God knew man couldnt do it alone and he gave him a woman,a wife. And the way they make this song is so beautiful. In many books of the bible talks about man and woman and the romance of it,its not just a plane boring 2,000 page book, its so much more.

Lyrics (couple more lines at the end): I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first He'd put me deep, deep under so that he could work And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you At last, at last Bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last You were the brightest shade of sun I had ever seen Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest kings And like the dawn you woke the world inside of me You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you At last, and you will surely be the death of me But how could I have known? I was sleeping in the garden (oh oh) I can show you I was sleeping in the garden ? (oh oh) ***Such a cool song! So beautiful! The high part is really cool at "surely be the death of me" And yeah I didn't even realize it involved religion until reading some of the comments, either :D I had thought it was a love song

Definitely folk! Tow'rs has a somewhat similar sound - try their songs "Belly of the Deepest Love" (about the crucifixion of Christ) and "December". Sarah Sparks also does Christian folk, it's vastly different from the Oh Hellos but still lovely. Try "Eustace Scrubb" or "The Gardener". Seryn's This is Where We Are album is the most Oh Hellos-esque music I've found. The album is clean and filled with the Oh Hellos deep and aching wonder - the lead singer is Christian and the lyrics (especially "On My Knees" have a Christian vibe). For them, I recommend "We Will All Be Changed", "Towering", and "Beach Song" from that album and "The Wind and the Storm" and "Foreign Fields" from their other album. All are stunning songs. Also highly recommend the Gray Havens, especially "She Waits", "Storehouse", "Stone" (the closest to TOH), and "Ghost of a King". Ever since I found TOH, I spent years looking for bands with a similar sound and faith and these are the fruits of my labors.

This song is permanently tied to a trip I took to alaska where I listened to it exclusively. They weren’t tied because of a reason, just coincidence. But I think it kind of works. It’s about being human, raw, and not making excuses for it. It’s about passion, and the truth. The pulse of life. The promise of meaning. Shucking off the layers of social training that facilitate the word-bound world of success. Anyway, it just makes me think someday, things might be different, and better.

I love the ambiguity of the message of this song, it can mean a lot of things for anyone. If you're religious, this song is a hit, if you're not, it's still a hit! All though The Oh Hellos are Christian, they consider they're band secular, so whatever songs they make, it's for everyone, because it depends on how you view the message of the song, like an author to it's reader audience.

Like a lot of others it seems, I had no idea this was a religious song. Knowing that now, the lyrics make a lot of sense. I thought it was just a beautiful song, sung by a woman who experienced a great emotion when thinking or seeing the person she loves. I suppose that's more or less the sentiment anyway. I'm not religious either like many here. But that doesn't change my appreciation for the song. It is beautiful. I will keep it in my playlist and keep enjoying it. Thank you The Oh Hellos :)

Oh, I see. This is of the love of Adam for Eve. I never thought of that as a very loving relationship, when I was a child it seemed like a simple relationship between two people who just happened to be the only people around each other. Later it seemed that Adam was possessive and demeaning, defining her as an extension of himself. As I have heard other peoples views on theology I had my attention drawn to Adam blaming her for choices he made, and concluded that Adam was arrogant and controlling and selfish and his refusal to acknowledge Eve as her own person caused the fall of Mankind from the grace of God. Of course it is just as well that we fell so we might be redeemed in the Cross but that doesn't make it right.
