    Hi Juliet regarding tent and something to consider, for the same weight you can have a Hilleberg Enan, a huge upgrade in shelter in terms of comfort / cooking and what it can take if you get caught out on multiday trips or if going remote where a shelter fail would be an issue this time of year. Combine it with the Nammatj 10mm black pole if you really want to push the edge of its performance envelope. Certainly a worth investment and about the best tent for bikepacking (ive tried alot!) for solo trips. As for your kettle, carry a lenght of 3mm guy line, wrapped around the 2 handles with a central line through and knotted off when you set up camp give's you a non burn handle and takes less than a minute to setup/wrap away (ive lost times lol the amount of times burnt prior, its always that thin blister on the two fingers which is a total arse when in the drops shifting and on a de-teched bike for trips)! Also again if remote i carry the plastic gas stand as i spare and use the MSR lowdown stand adapter, its sooo good at improving stability/safety on uneven ground, or in wind, way easier to adjust cooker power and well for 170 grams whilst not the lightest the improvement it brings is an essential i think. Edit - Also after making the switch to Tailfin from Apidura and other saddle bags, no going back. Worth checking out when you get time, and lots of options on the panniers that literally cover any trip length, but id recommend the top bag for its stability its literally the best system ever used. Has carbon options but i use alloy (super remote trips).

    @@tinglydingle It depends on your requirements, if your going to super remote places for extended periods when a price in shelter can mean the difference between life and death from exposure, then it is what it is, thankfully ive had mine for some years now, but yea they have gone through the roof as with all outdoor high end gear . I have yet to find a better quality bike packing tent however and not as yet managed to break it (and its been tested to rediculous conditions when really should have been in the Soulo). Best thing is go to Sweden and buy one there and combine it with a trip as some amazing bike routes and scenery out there is stunning, a mini Alaska almost in parts.

    @@_Mountain_DaveI drove 26,000 km around Africa for 6 months for fun with a cheap Coleman tent, including 3 days stuck in the middle of the Sahara waiting for rescue, and the same tent was used to camp the length of Norway. I'm sure it's very nice, but there are practically no circumstances where an £800 tent makes the difference between life and death lmao

  • @_Mountain_Dave

    @_Mountain_Dave

    @@tinglydingle Yea no worries pointless me listing out all the places i've been, but Arctic conditions to Equator covers it. Skills, SA, anticipation and the right gear mean the difference between life and exposure/death in the right conditions, i can think of all too many circumstances. Do not assume everyone has the same skillset. You get overnighted, injured, hell even on Dartmoor in winter conditions, ice rain /sleet/snow , injured unable to move and tent failed due to meteo - without comm's, chances are its a recovery job not a rescue. Doubt me ask your local MRT. Norway is amazing, i have been many times, especially to the north in Winter. There and over the border Sweden is amazing, some of the most stunning scenery, scotland on steriods and as i said a mini Alaska and vastly undertravelled by Brits. Some interesting nights where a coleman would have taken you to Sweden as a kite, anything but fully geodesic was a non starter. Not always possible to dig a hole, make shelter or get to one of the many (i've no doubt you came across them when you where travelling) rural shelters prebuilt. Nothing against coleman, i have one, but right tent for right use. About that rescue, hope you didn't get down to setting up still's or distilling your own pee🤣, bloody J70/LC or Defender troubles hey ;-)! But yea i was purely highlighting to the content creator, who makes some great vlogs some options worth checking out on her current setup and simple lightweight tips to not get burnt. I stand by what i said, find me a cheaper 1.2kg tent that can stick the same meteo and use in varied conditions (albeit with a non standard 10mm pole and guy setups) then i'd be all over it. Agree with you prices for most things these days, esp outdoor gear, climbing equipment and bikes/components are crazy and out of control. Stay safe and all the best on your next travels, have a good one :-)

    Love these setup videos. My biggest worry for people looking to go for the first time is the cost - including bags you’ve probably got £1K-£1.5K worth of bikepacking kit there. For a night or two away - which may boot end up being someone’s cup of tea - it’s a huge investment and probably prohibitive for many. Sadly the gear does cost a lot especially if you want it good and small enough to fit into bikepackung setup (and aren't sponsored). Even bits of my old high end lightweight touring setup are too big and I needed even smaller kit. That said I’d encourage people to start maybe borrowing or just stay in a b&b or whatever and still enjoy a good multi day trip. Not sure I’d take two of those lighter thingy’s. I’ve got a flint type one but to be honest nothing beats a lighter and they’re small and cheap and in many situations just better. You only know once you find yourself struggling to light something while someone with a lighter does it in an instant! Looking forward to see where you go.

    For a night or two, for new people going/getting into wild camping out on a bike take what you think you need, you will soon learn what you don't need and do need! Don't spend a lot of money on equipment - you wont use it. Pack your backpack and just go for it. (Back in the late 70's early 80's I was of on my bike for three/four days at a time with a pack of peanut butter sarnie's and some fruit, few bottles of water and a tent strapped to my back) 🙄

During covid i spashed out on a Zpacks Duplex which is brilliant with some caveats and it weighs about 550g but I'm scared to leave it anywhere lol (in case it gets nicked !!! ) so i am reprising slightly uncomfortable single person tenting with my 80's ridge tent which is tiny at the end (its essentially a nylon coffin) for this years hiking trips . I wish the UK (ok the world) was more friendly with camping and hiking. I do sometimes feel like 'a very naughty boy' when surrreptitiously looking for potential camp sites at dusk .... :)

Also if you replaced the rubber tube with two elastomer tubes, tubolito are the original but a lot of other brands do them now and the price is dropping. I find that the weight is balanced better, especially when you need to carry the bike. When bikepacking you can ride on small trails. On trains you dont need to take off any bags. When I have to push my bike through crowds, I know my bike won't snag on anything. It's just so much more convenient.

    Good stuff , curious what do you wear on your feet at camp , I have tried walking socks, cheap water shoes, lightweight trainers and minimalist sandals but have yet to find the ideal. Less of an issue if not calling at the pub but then there is the whole river crossing saga - what do you take .

    Depends on the trip. Usually sandals (Restrap or Teva) or Vivobarefoot shoes. I'd like to try the Bedrock sandals too; they look nice but they're quite pricey. The have a good enough sole to ride in

    I love your bike videos so much! But, I have a non-bike question for you: Do you breed British Shorthairs? All your kittens are so darling!

  • @JulietElliottsChannel

    @JulietElliottsChannel

    3 ай бұрын

    Thanks! No, we don’t breed them, we let our British Blue cat have a litter before getting her neutered. The kittens have now gone to relatives and friends, all except George, who we kept (and has now been neutered too). So no more kittens unfortunately

    I wouldn’t use that hiplok… I’ve had 3, all returned under warranty or as faulty good.. and the pin can change on its own, and when you’ve just locked the bike. It’s many minutes/ hour to scroll through the numbers and unlock it Shame as the concept and form is brilliant
