Lightning strikes sailboat and blows out the bottom - Part 2

Anchored in paradise a bolt of lightning devastates a small sailing boat by destroying all the electronics and smashing a hole in the bottom of the boat. Water floods in. Alone, I struggle to keep the water from getting higher and plug the hole in the bottom.

I was tied to dock fortunately when a big black thunderstorm approached and I began to hear sound like air leaking from a tire. I thought ton my blackwater tank vent to listen if it was not venting. Nope not the issue. Listen some more, hmm getting louder and now more like sizzle sound. Looked up, against the deep black clouds I could see blue arcing from the top of the mast. A little pondering before running for cover I decide to clip 2 battery charging cables to the forestay, a couple sparks later and the sizzle, and blue arching stopped just as the lighting startled to let loose.

Honestly most people would have not thought 💭 to do any of this. There boat would have sank to the bottom. They would call tow service or coast guard and before help 🆘 arrived the boat would have sank. Then the fees would start to build which would be in the range of $10k + per day. This video is a lesson to prepare for lightning ⚡ protection to give it a way to dissipate before jumping to the motor. And to have dive gear and a way to plug holes in case this happens. This man is amazing and very smart. Using the fresh water pump as a bilge pump. Once again most would have sunk the boat. Best they could do is beach the boat. And that takes skill as well to do it right. I'm so glad you saved it Plucky, but most would have sank. Your a genius.

I agree, he should install a good lightning diverter system so he doesn't run the risk again of lightning punching a hole in his boat again. Also a means of fast disconnecting all sensitive electronics during a thunderstorm. Fiberglas seems very fragile when dealing with lightning. I would prefer a steel boat tbh.
