Lightning Protection: ENGINE & PROPELLOR for lightning grounding? | Ask The Expert with NIGEL CALDER

Nigel Calder explains why you should not use your engine and propellor as main path to ground in a lightning protection system. Instead, you need a dedicated ground terminal below the mast.
Check out our Advanced Marine Electrics program where we have a whole module dedicated to lighting protection on boats: boathowto.com/advanced-marine...

Thanks again for a valuable tip! I am sure many opened their eyes just as I did :) Although I would like to ask a favour. Could you ever make a little video explaining how the grounding and lightning grounding work in a steel boat? Steel boats are not top be found in the US and definitely not in the southern Europe but here in The Netherlands, in Germany and also in UK (many narrow boats) there are many. Thank you for your great knowledge every time!!!

We cover this in detail in one way or another in the advanced marine electrical course. With both a grounded DC system (negative side of the DC system connected to the grounding bus and to the water) and an isolated (ungrounded) DC system (negative side of the DC system is not connected to the grounding bus and the water) all bonding, lightning protection, and AC grounding conductors terminate at a grounding bus, which in turn is connected to the water. The difference between the grounded and isolated ground DC systems is with the former the negative side of the DC system is also connected to the grounding bus and with the latter it is not. The steel boat with an isolated DC system still needs that connection to the water for the various grounding circuits. - Nigel

@@BoatHowTo Dear Nigel, thank you very much for your extensive reply. I am going tomorrow to the boat and check again every grounding and all connections. I am considering joining the advanced course too. All the best with your training site. You have been educating boaters since ever. Totally thankful :) 👋👋👋
