Lightning Lap VIR Grand Course - Camaro SS 1LE -

Ойын-сауық

2022 Camaro SS 1LE - 08 May 24 - Lightning Lap hosted by Car and Driver and Kaizen Autosport. VIR Grand Course
Finally got a chance to run the VIR grand course. I've been wanting to come here to compare to the official Car and Driver Lightning laps. I was only able to get 2 laps in with my Nankangs until I bent my Apex wheel(not their fault, I hit a curb), that time stood for the rest of the day. I ran the following sessions with the OEM wheels and tires to compare to the official Car and Driver lap for the SS 1LE of a 2:54.8. My car ran in LL2 which is for cars between $40k and $75k.
No engine modifications, stock exhaust, and stock power.
Hawk 60 F/R brake pads, SRF Brake Fluid, DSSV Suspension, -3.1 - 1/32 F, -2.4 R + 1/32 R, SPL Semi Trailing Arms, SPL Upper arm Rear, BMR toe rod.
Lap 1: 18x11 Apex Wheels with Nankang CRS V2
Lap 2: OEM Wheels and tires (SC3)

    Just watched a video of a Camaro breaking a wheel, and sending himself, and a C8 off of the road. The video stated that the wheel had ben previously repaired.

    I saw that too. But this wheel is not going to get repaired, it's getting replaced. Also that wheel was welded together. I would never drive a wheel that had cracked before and been welded together.

    I don't think so. They run the Official LL times at a different time of the year. This one is hosted by them to get people out on track with a little bit of competition but nothing serious.

    crazy driving! 90% of the 1LE's gains over a stock SS is in the tires. Then theres the brakes, PTM, and bushings. Its highly debatable whether the ELSD is worth anything. The bushings for sure make the car more planted and precise, but it looks like you changed, actually removed most of the 1LE bushings in the rear for ball joints(much better) and upgraded the wheels and tires. At that point, might as well start with a base SS. Do you have the stock sway bars? Because I know the DSSV ZL1LE cars have softer bars to compensate for the stiffer suspension. If you have the stock sways, your car is probably way too stiff for 200tw tires and actually well set up for slicks. Is the tire wear even with that much camber on 200tw?

    I don't personally think that the arms in the rear of the car did that much to change the overall behavior and grip of the car. The advantage of the arms is that it allows for more camber in the rear and locking out the camber eccentric bolt adjustment stops the camber from changing during hard track driving. Wheels and tires definitely make a difference but the OEM SC3 tires are actually very capable. Nankangs are better but they are also lighter overall(being mounted on 18" wheels). I have the OEM swaybars on my car, it might be slightly stiff for street tires but If I look at the times on the same track where I ran with OEM setup vs DSSV the laptimes are almost identical. Tire still tends to wear more on the outside than the inside with -3.1 camber.

    Nice driving! How much of a difference does the DSSV make compared to the stock Magneride?

  • @SpyderRacing

    @SpyderRacing

    16 күн бұрын

    Laptime wise it makes 0 difference. Only issue with magride is that when you put on Hoosier A7's there is enough body roll to cause rubbing from 315 tires on the front fenders. DSSV's reduce body roll a bit and fix this issue for me. But on same tires DSSV vs Magride the laptime is essentially identical.

    Amazing driving!!! Is the Nankang a square setup? From this side, it looked like the OEM setup had less drama. I'm trying to setup my own ss 1le and your videos are very helpful!

  • @SpyderRacing

    Yes Nankang is 315 30 18 on apex wheels 18x11. They have a bit more oversteer because of the extra grip up front.

    @@SpyderRacing Ah 315 interesting! Did you have to modify the fenders or anything to fit those in the front? Or did switching to DSSV fix that issue? I was looking at a 305 square setup to allow for easy rotations. In hindsight, would you recommend just sticking to stock wheel setup or do you really love the extra grip up front?

  • @SpyderRacing

    @SpyderRacing

    Ай бұрын

    @@rmistry123 315's will poke out up front, there is no way to fix this unless you get wider aftermarket fenders or get an aftermarket suspension setup that allows for you to put in like -5 degrees of camber (too much in my opinion). The DSSVs reduce body roll and prevent stickier tires like Hoosier A7's from rubbing on the fender, but they don't do anything to decrease the amount of poke. I personally love the stock setup with OEM SC3 tires, if you are just doing HPDE I would stick with that. The downside to OEM wheels is that they are not as resilient as the Apex ones and they can bend on track. This video is an extreme example of the Apex wheels taking punishment, if it was the OEM wheel the thing would have broken in half. You can also play around with some other options and maybe do 295 square to reduce the poke almost completely I think. I'm just trying to maximize laptime so I use 315 but it's not necessary. I don't find the handling changes that much, the car feels good with both setups to me.

    I run square 305/30/19. 315/30/18 would’ve fit too. Plus they’re cheaper. Just keep in mind the pros/cons of running a smaller diameter. You’ll need camber plates or a strut mod on the front. There will be poke but the suspension is stiff enough to not cause problems.

    My understanding is they resurfaced the course way after caranddriver did their lap time with the camaros. Do you think with the Trofeo RS tires running 315s in the back the SS1LE can beat the Dark Horse? Your time is very close to Dark Horse time with different wheels.

    It's impossible to say unless you test both cars in the same day with the same driver. Temperatures make a huge difference and the day I set this lap was fairly hot. I also think with more practice I would have been in the 50's but the damage so early kind of killed any chances of improving. I've also never used the trofeo tires, not sure how they compare.

    @al151 if I ever get a chance to try them I'll post my thoughts but I'm not sure I'll ever have a need to use them. Looks like they don't come in 18s and I'm better off going full slick over 100TW
