+Richard Beacham It happens worst on the strings that get batted around in the wind as it damages the filaments. However it is nowhere near as bad compared to leaving the strings on all the time. Most bulbs aren't on even half the time.

so many great hints and tips, I defenitly will use some tips form you, very in depth and informative thanks so much for sharing.

I enjoyed watching your entire video. Your clear conversational style and interesting content help make it so. I was profoundly struck by the realization most of your setup uses incandescent lamps. I'm going to try using a Light-0-Rama controller or similar DIY controllers I can garner inspiration from on Instructable - to give that a go. My experiment will be limited as I have an older house with only 60-Amp service. So, running LEDs with their substantially lower current draw is almost a necessity. Thanks again for sharing your approach to Christmas lighting It's a real inspiration!

I’m doing mine differently I’m usI got a arduino and relay boards to control mine I also could use rgb Christmas lights which save tons of wire. I love the video the amount of wires you have seems very stressful. Keep up the good work👍👍 to do my lights I use vixen 3 which is the software I use to program them

For our show, we use all store bought outdoor extension cords. With the SPT wire do you have trouble with them tripping the GFCI when they get wet? I think this would be a great alternative for our display but it does get rained on 3 or 4 times a season.

Creative Displays has a easy fix for that which we use. It's a moisture blocking gasket for cords. Perhaps that will help you. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYVtr9B6m7rScrg.html&feature=share

+Jose Herrera Circumference of the base ring is 32', so one super-string every foot. The pole is 17' from ground to the where the lights attach. I have a 24" snowflake on top of that.

The box is a great idea. I'm wondering if you have upgraded to the S5. Have you considered using the LOR Light Linker or wireless set up. Look forward to your newest.

thanks PJay. I am still running S3. It works fine for what my display is. I don't need any of the new RGB features they've been adding. I have added couple light linkers, but only to link one of the furthest controllers. They are too expensive to justify buying a lot of them when wires can still be used.

How strong of winds do you get? We can have up to 60 mph winds and I'm not sure if a mega tree like that will hold.

+Lighting Up Leo Pretty similar, though not every year. I have lost icicles and the star off the roof, but never a mega tree. The only consideration I have ever made for the mega trees would the the addition of middle guys at the coupling. The downward force on the pole under high winds can cause some bowing, so that would be insurance for that. No need for a base though. There aren't any forces applied there with my setup.

Not sure if your even still monitoring this video so long from it's original posting. Awesome job. What spacing do you recommend for the mega tree lights at base?

It would depend on the height of the tree for what looks best. For a 15-20 ft tree, spacing about 1 ft around the base ring would look good. I use 32 strands per color on a 17' tree with 11' diameter. It works out to about 1' spacing.

hi there, don't know if you will see this as this video was posted a long time ago, firstly can I say just wow, Im from the uk and wish I could do something like this. Just wanted to know if you doing a Christmas display this year if so, could you do a full in depth video of setting everything, up as its very interesting. also bit of a in depth to how you program your shows, and also the storage of it all. thank you kindly

Thank you! Unfortunately I am not having the display this year, but these are all great suggestions for the future! I will make sure I can do at least one of those next time.

VERY SMART to stick with Incandescent lights. We spent thousands of dollars converting to LED lights just to find out that they RUST! :( So that was a huge waste of money. If I still had my Incandescent lights I would stick with them.. They last forever and they never rust. Also LEDs don't fade as well as Incandescent. PS.. Your lights are very neat, Cant imagine how long that takes. Kudos :)

+carmencolumbusohio Thank you. Yes, with the higher cost, LEDs wouldn't ever pay for themselves in my case. Incandescents are much easier to troubleshoot and fix when things do fail. My only concern with them is bulb color fading overtime due to UV exposure. That's why I don't begin setup until November. After 4 years of use some of the red bulbs have begun to fade slightly, though it is not very noticeable yet.

Is the 1 1/4 pole galvanized?

no, It's just black steel gas pipe. Galvanized water pipe would work as well.

I was surprised to find out that your display is all incandescent. Ive had good luck maintaining my LED sets that Ive been using since 2010.

+TheRobertpyoung Great to hear. I will always be incandescent as long as the stockpile holds up. It's too expensive to convert and also maintain the uniformity I have now. I also like the warm glow of the clear bulbs.

They have something called "Warm White" LED's if you didn't know. You may though.

@@LightingUpPaxton we would love to move on to LED for our Mega tree but have found that when the box says warm white it may be last years warm white and is a different color this year. The companies need to be a little more consistent in their colors. 🎅❤🤶 ✌🏻❤

I use color lights and there are no LEDs warm enough. They have a long way to go before I even consider buying them

+james123212 Electric rates in our part of the country are very low. About 4-5 cents/kWh. Last two December bills have been $250 and $275 each.. The lights are also seldom on at 100%, so the music synchronization cuts down the costs as well.

+Lighting Up Paxton My kWh cost is around 20 cents, thanks to our stupid politicians and the build of a $12 billion dollar nuclear plant that never went online, but we get to pay for it anyway.
