    Wow this was so helpful! I have been painting for 30 years and always just used natural light (near a window etc) Now that Im getting older (and the eyesight isnt as great as it once was) Ive noticed how important having good light in my studio is! Thank you for all this fab information :D

    A better lighting setup was one of the first things I invested in after paints, paper, and brushes. It makes such a world of difference. And yeah, I think it's a constant journey of just "making it work."

    If I may add a note about daylight: the colour and intensity of daylight changes every 5 minutes, which really messes up one's filming. The trouble is that one doesn't notice it happening because one's eye automatically adjusts; however, the camera doesn't. Having a north window doesn't help: the changing light bounces off the building across the street!!! Artificial light (5500Kelvin) works best when it is bounced off a white wall; at least it is constant.

    Omg I needed this Sarah, especially for us tiny studio artists with hardly any natural light. My studio is literally also my dogs room and it's also basically a closet. 😆

    Yeeeeuuuup! I get it! For that reason I LOVE any type of clip/clamp light. So easy to position as needed. I think nowadays it's easier to find some that are also dimmable too

    Dear Sarah, thanks for this kind video........here is secret for you... Is not the Color temp, is the CRI....specifically The Hi CRI R12 and R9 and Full spectrum capability of the your light source . One Low budget LIght Option: "Try a Full spectrum almost 99 CRI old Halogen bulb (Old Worker 500 watts light), Bounced ".... I know , is very Hot and Not Very efficient, but you´ll see that this 3200k/3000k will be great about the reproduction of real colors ( Real = Sun light colors 100 CRI). The Expensive one : "Mole Richardson light" or "Arri Light" Whith L.O.V.E. Humberto.

    The tiny spaces bit is soooo relatable! My art space is my work space and it's also my dining table... but I can see how proper lighting can help make the space more comfortable for different settings (and it's also kinder for the eyes!). Thanks as always for the tips and all the knowledge, Sarah, this video really rocks!

    Oh wow Sarah thank you so much for this! You basically confirmed that I'm already doing all I can do at this moment due to my budget and my painting conditions in the van. However my budget could increase and so I am so grateful to know all of these things so as my budget grows I can purchase the most impacting equipment with that money. I think the articulating arms going to be life-changing for me. I'm also grateful that when the time comes and I do have the budget I can refer back to this video to remind myself of your amazing tips and tricks. As it is now I Velcro my phone to the roof of the van and pray that my head doesn't get in the way 😂🤣. I am also only painting during the day to take advantage of the natural light which even when I'm filming can be glary. I do often have the benefit of adjusting the position of my van so that I get the best possible light coming through the windows. However sometimes that's not an option so I do look forward to having an articulating arm and maybe even a light on a gooseneck or something. Again thank you thank you thank you!!!

    Thank you for sharing this, Sarah. I've been livestreaming science fiction and space art over the last year and it's been a big learning curve. I've stumbled through a few of the issues you've pointed out and I really like the bounce light and BenQ lights you've featured. Definitely considering them going forward. So many reflections bounce off of wet paint during a live painting session, it's been challenging sometimes.

  • @SarahBurnsStudio

    @SarahBurnsStudio

    3 жыл бұрын

    Oh yea it’s a real challenge! Another thing you could do is get photo-reflectors and tack them to the walls/ceiling if you need to bounce more light. It takes lots of finessing! Even after streaming for years I’m still constantly adjusting things.

    Love the tips for lighting. I never thought about something dim-able and color temperature changing. My biggest struggle currently is keeping my head out of the camera when recording. I am fairly near sighted so trying to find that perfect angle so I don't film my head but still able to see what I am doing is a challenge I'm still working out.

    Thank you for making this video! I just recently moved out of a windowless garage into a space with lots of natural lighting! I used to feel more like a goblin in the windowless garage than an actual person who's grinding to make art a career. I'm definitely on the lookout for those large standing lights in my future. Keep up the awesome work!

    I recently bought a Daylight-lamp that is actually meant to be used with an artists easel, but I am using it at my desk and have attached it to a shelf next to my desk. It's not the cheapest one, but as far as the light temp goes and not having it on my desk taking up space, it is just what I needed. Before I had only a regular Ikea desk lamp and it lit about half of the desk...which is not good 😄

And You added the cost from Amazon. I do like the water color paper showing in a painting. But canvas in acrylic or oil I do not like the cloth texture. I do not have a grate camera. Enjoy your are. I am by habit a Naturist artist with many detail , but my sketches are more loose. Mainly to capture colors , and details that attracted me in the first place., mainly the short lived Lighting. I get it that you were probably using that lamp for a very long time but why didn't you try and get some smart bulbs as soon as they came out I use the Philips Wiz light bulbs and I can dim them and change them to any color I want including if I decide to have a studio party all from my app. Honestly they absolutely changed my life in my studio and home and I came from the background of having an artist and arts activist and an art teacher who was constantly trying to get her 80s and 90s Studio to have good Lighting in a 1925 house ironically I have my art studio in my mom's old art studio in that 1925 house and the best thing I've gotten so far is those smart bulbs with some clamp lights with light diffusion soft covers on them. That's not to say I'm not going to be looking at that studio lighting you've been talking about because the main thing only thing I'm having a problem with is photographing in my studio and filming my painting process with my pickiness

    The only problem I would have with getting a desk lamp or any other lamp that has the bulb or lights actually attached to it is you can't change it if it goes out. You have to get a whole new light unless you get your choice of clamp lamp or desk lamp with smart bulbs my only thing is don't get the Philips Hue bulbs they're extra pricey for no reason whatsoever if you get Philips which I do like get the ones that have the Wiz app they are cheaper and mine have lasted me for a long time but I know that Govi lighting makes some good lights too. I apologize for the comments 2 years after you're making this I'm just now seeing it today at the crack of dawn please understand that I am not saying any of this to be critical I'm just giving other artists some more ideas out there with things that have gone wrong in my studio like buying a really cool desk lamp with built-in lights just to have the light go out and me not be able to do anything and in fact that happened with our LED fan lights when we redid upstairs we can't do anything about the lights in our fans because that's what we picked at the time and in hindsight I would get a fan where I could switch out the light bulbs and put my own LED light bulbs in there I love your work and thank you for giving us so many ways to help our creative processes and sharing them. Honestly I don't know if you could do this but I am trying to figure out a really good way to record my painting process but I paint vertically with acrylic paint I don't want to be in the frame as much as I can be out of it but there's really not many videos out there that help somebody who paints vertically or on an easel sort of I can't even do that really because I need to have something that catches water underneath what I do because I use a lot of it in order to break down the paint to get the look I'm going for so if you have any suggestions for that from one artist to another you would save me from a lot of anxiety and hair pulling
