Before this photo was taken, Churchill had just finished a speech to the Canadian House of Commons. He demanded no official photo be taken for the event, as it might show favouritism to Canada among the other commonwealth nations in ww2. He was escorted to the speaker of the house’s office where he expected to meet the speaker. Instead he was met by Karsh and his photography equipment which put him in a foul mood. He agreed to only two minutes and stated that he would continue smoking during the process. Karsh agreed and set up the camera and lighting. He approached Churchill seemingly to change his posture but instead plucked the cigar out of his mouth and ran to snap the photo. The first photo is this one discussed and after, Churchill said “ my boy, you could make a roaring lion sit still for a photograph.” He then smiled which Karsh captured as the second photo. The first photo was seen as an example of British steadiness in the face of the enemy and was called “the roaring lion” by Karsh. The original portrait still hangs beside that very chair in the speaker’s office in Ottawa to this day. The second photo is less well known but is a rare glimpse at an otherwise stoic and serious man.

@@RunNGunPhoto True story! And the paper in his pocket actually is the speech he just gave (according to an interview Karsh himself gave in 1960 to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - in French here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmxl1byNj72_hJM.html).

I am trying to figure out of what this is this master photographer lightning setup. You are telling he used to have to large soft box as providing the light for this iconomic photograph. I don't believe you. My 5 minute research were telling this master photographer was using the hard light, and also this Churchill is showing such. You are telling it was soft light. There must be some miscorrection when trying to thing about what is light is about. Can you provide the test shot? I will do on my side also.

In the video I stated: "To light this scene, I would have used a soft box." It is very possible and likely that Karsh did not use a soft box.
