Lightbar Highlight: Federal Signal Twinsonic

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a short demonstration of my Federal Signal Twinsonic. This is a simple, albeit anti-aerodynamic lightbar. These bars were popular in the 70's and 80's. I'm glad to have a rare red/blue bar.

The Twinsonic was designed to have a synchronized flash pattern so that when viewed from the front the rotating lights would produce simultaneous flashes at the end of the bar while producing sequential flashes moving toward the center speaker along the both mirror assemblies. This affect was patented by Federal Signal and was especially effective at several hundred yards distance when viewed from the front of the police vehicle or fire apparatus. This can be achieved by positioning both driver and passenger rotator (lampholders) on the same axis (i.e. facing the same direction) and adjusting the chain so that when viewed from the front the sealed beam lamps both facing the front of the vehicle. An interesting side note, the model 11 Visibar was also synchronized but the lamps were set at 90 degree (one lampholder faced to the front of the vehicle while the other side faced to the side of the vehicle). When viewed from the front say several hundred yards away the light flashes seemed to literally jump from one side to the other side across the roof of the vehicle. This was patented By Federal as well. You will see this on some late 1960's TV shows. Very nice lightbar by the way!

Thanks! My Twin was aligned properly, I think it slipped during my last move. Good catch though!

The fire department near me has an old explorer with this bar, I'm assuming it was a hand me down from a previous vehicle however it speaks to the durability of these things. 👍

Hello, and thanks for watching! You aren't the first person to ask that question! They answer is.... I'm not exactly sure. I have one bar that I do not have a controller for (Rontan, based in Spain). They are really hard to find here in the US, and I am waiting to try and find that, so that ALL of the bars work completely. I'm hoping to put out the Volume III Video before the end of this year. Thanks for asking- and thanks again for watching!

Wasn't there a strobe version, too? 🤔 I am pretty sure I've seen those on quite a few ambulances here in Austria back in the 1980/1990s. But they were definitely not halogen bars.

There definitely wasn't a strobe version of THIS particular bar. This bar was introduced in the 1960's, where as strobe lightbars didn't hit the market until the mid-to-late 80's. I suppose it's possible that some changed them aftermarket, but Federal Signal never offered a strobe version of this particular bar. Thanks for watching!!

I should clarify, that my comment stands for United States. FedSig could have made a specific bar for European needs... but I have no knowledge of that.
