Lifting and Dividing Perennials Joes Country Garden April 2024
Divide and conquer. I've been digging up and dividing perennials where the hard landscape is being changed. This is the perfect time to do this job and can save you a lot of money, creating plants for free (well with a bit of work).
In this video I take a tour of the garden and make sure there is a bit less of me and bit more of the plants in shot. I'm lifting and dividing some irises and heeling them in to the veg beds. It's exciting to see what colour flowers they'll develop.
Slight clicking on the microphone. Still working on the sound.

Don’t listen to any viewers. It’s your garden. Love your vlogs.

I like to see you and anyways it makes me a little dizzy when you keep moving the camera around the garden. Just do you Joe. Was enjoying the videos as they were x
We're so appreciative you are taking the time to share your adventures and tips with us. Ignore the whiners.
We were so happy to find your channel. Do not pay any attention to the “too much of you” baloney! It is such an exciting time for you folks - a big, new adventure - and we are lucky to see the progress. Thank you - for your knowledge and for including us!
Too much Joe . NEVER ... Dont you dare listen to silly people. I love your channel and your interaction. Keep up the fabulous work.
I'm finding this is the first thing I turn to lately. You can feel the fresh air in it! It's exciting to see what choices you make, and catch your enthusiasm. You know roughly where you're going and we have the pleasure of watching the mystery unfold. Very engaging.
I love dividing and moving plants for free. So satisfying.
My mind works in the same way, digging up splitting plants and selling them on to other customers,a great way to save and make money. Favourite vlog at the minute
I did a childish dance and crush a grape type actions when my Agapanthus sprouted this year, it's special to me. I remember one time walking round a garden centre holding an umbrella.
The longer videos like this are more enjoyable because there's more time to relax into the viewing experience. No need to watch that other show now so thanks Joe
There's something very rewarding about digging up and dividing plants and getting more free plants. So lucky to have the existing veg garden as a place to hold/heel them in. The wooden beds organising the chaos of the hardscaping is so satisfying.
I agree with leaving the clocks alone, Joe for prime minister 😊
I think there's not enough Joe! Could watch you garden all day, so much enthusiasm, with so much knowledge. Priceless. Must also say thankyou for reminding me of 2 katsura trees I had planted as small sticks which had grown into 2 lovely small trees. Cercidiphyllum Japonicum. Such a gem with the sun behind it. Keep going Joe, loads to do I am sure but looks lovely in the spring already
Joe, you are inspiring and I can remember the sheer excitement of discovering what was growing in our garden when we moved in 40 years ago. I'm dead jealous!!
Great video Joe !! Enjoying your excitement and process. Wonderful to watch a professional designer at work . Thanks from Nova Scotia. FYI To Much Joe ??? Ha I think not . Great camera work
I like the evening light, too. On the other hand I'm a late riser. And summertime makes my social jetlag even worse as the light levels tell me one thing - and my body clock follows those- and society tells me I have to get up at seven (six according to "real time" and light levels) to get my kids to school in time....
Never too much of you!
I am with you Joe and would love to stay on summer hours. Here in the northern part of Washington state the winter months dark by 4pm and with our wonderful thick cloud cover sometimes it seems dark all day! Love your channel and enjoying your new garden. It is so much fun to see what comes up. Brings me back 35 years when I bought my house and waited for spring to see what was in the gardens. Happy digging!

Just moved to Ohio, and I've been incredibly depressed every winter. When your house is too cold to shower in, clean, or like hang out in, for seven months of the year just makes me feel imhuman.
Nice fork! My price tools are my stainless steel fork & spade I’ve had for twenty years. I’m very careful never to leave them where they may be pilfered. You’ve got plenty of choice plants there Joe. They just need replanting in freshly dug beds in an arrangement that pleases you. An enjoyable if lengthy task.
I'm a massive iris fan too Joe,they are so beautiful, mine are due their 3 Yr divide after flowering this year, nothing beats free plants👌🏼keep doing what you're doing,I'm loving the process, your garden is goin to be magic.
Great point about digging up plants and dividing them. Best way to fill out a garden without breaking the bank. Using the 2litre pot gave it real context. This channel is a real revalation, great advice and knowledge sharing but feels like having a chat with an experienced garden you've bumped into and just want to talk gardens. 'Proper gardening' indeed
I agree, keep the summer time. No need now to change back
Looking lovely 😊
Oh how I love to watch you work! 😊 fantastic guidance and inspiration thank you 😊
Love your vlogs. You carry on doing it your way. Your lovely smile and ironic humour all add to the pleasure. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
PG Tips I agree about the clocks etc . 🤣🤣👍
Great post again Joe many thanks for taking us along on your garden journey and we love to see you in the posts wouldn’t be Joes garden otherwise 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks Joe, reminded me that I need to split my bearded iris up. It is a beautiful white one so will be great to have more.
I'm hoping you will do something like growing veggies for beginners if possible. I learned to grow veg from Mr. Geoffrey Smith in the 70's TV series, but over the years life got in the way and I drifted away from gardening. Now I want to get back to it as I had great success with tomatoes when Covid hit and I've been bitten by the bug again. Looking forward to your future videos. Good luck with all your plans!
Thanks joe for your wonderful videos, what you don’t want in plants, you could give them out free
Heck with meanies, I can’t get enough of you humor and charm. 😍
Excellent. Thanks Joe.
Hey Joe, loving your channel! I total agree that we should have lighter evenings - would be great. I started my gardening channel around the same time as you - you have a few (thousand!) more subscribers though! I be interested to hear how you’re finding the process - are you enjoying making and editing the videos and are you glad you started?
Hi Joe, love the way we are with you as you walk through your gorgeous garden. Always amazes me how silly people can be. Really loving your videos !!
You are right to focus the camera more on the plants. This was much more enjoyable than the last video
You should call the veg bed, Joes garden centre 😂😂. Great video Joe.
Loving watching you create your new garden Joe, it leaves me feeling giddy, not with excitement at the prospect of your progress, but the swinging camera work. Will continue to watch and hope for less giddiness.

Noted, will slow it down…
Looks like you have some very interesting plants in your new garden. It's an exciting time of year to see what you can lift and divide. I have been doing exactly that today during storm Kathleen, making new plants for my daughter's new garden 💚
😊,doing a good job joe, keep up the good work, its a work in progress ,best wishes , good luck,😊
Loving seeing the progress you're making and that nothing seems to phase you. It makes me realise I dont have to stress so much about the areas in my new but neglected garden and that sometimes it's best to see what plants appear amongst the weeds. Keep the videos coming Jo, I'm learning so much.
Thanks Joe. These vlogs are a great watch. They've become my go-to viewing, taking over from GW.
Mate keep it up and ignore the comments they don’t have to watch it if they’re not happy.
Yes, I do believe we are "Garden Lovers".
After you get your feet under you there, you're going to have open days for selling extra plants. Then you can fund your purchases of new ones. :-)
I am really loving this longer format, taking the time to do the tasks from the beginning to the end. I find that I am waiting for your videos now.
I agree : why do we still change the clocks? Crazy !
What a fantastic video Joe on how to split and divide. I’m in the process of levelling my garden after it being on a slope for 25 years and now realise I can divide nearly all of the plants and get more in. I’ve never seen anyone be as brutal with plants but I’m going to do it. 😂 thank you so much for sharing this. Deb in Yorkshire
I agree, lighter evenings all year please!
Great video thanks. It’s good to see the detail in how you do things step by step. I’m happy to see you in the video, no complaints at all.
I garden for several private gardens a week. So i have several private and free garden centers. :)
Hi Joe, loved watching you split up the iris. I’ve just bought a few new Iris plants. The one I’m really looking forward to is one called past the wine. What colours do you have in your garden? Love the videos
That was one comment from a whiner! You carry on doing your videos as before. Your channel is great. So informative and relaxing. Love the Benton Irises. My favourite is ‘Benton Cordelia’ for my cottage garden. Great info on plant division. Thank you Joe.
I just LOVE your gardening channel, Joe, but could you move a bit more slowly around the garden - i just get dizzy :-) and I can't get a good look at all the plants.
Dzieki. Ciekawa jestem ile osob panu pomaga w tym przeobrazaniu. Czekam na nastepne filmiki. Pozdrawiam Beata

None at the moment, but watch this space!
Thank you for the update! I am a huge iris fan as well. Their fragrance is incredible.
Thanks again Joe - loving following your progress. Inspiring me to get out and do more in the garden.
So jealous of your "inherited" Cedric Morris Iris, they are so beautiful! Let me know if you have too many, my postal address is ...... 😄
Very practical information. Thanks. Good to see how to split the plants and save money.
Best video yet, glad it was a long one. It must feel like Christmas every time something new ops up. How can you tell the Benton irises from the others?
Loved the care/replanting of irises - your step by step guide of dividing and transplanting is excellent! I'm going to do my long overdue irises tomorrow!
Found your new videos this evening Joe, looking forward to watching your progress! Great project.
I enjoy your hands on instructions and style.
Hi Joe love your videos keep them coming & I’m with you on the clocks changing ! leave the clocks alone ! Getting plants for free I love it ! I’ve started putting a lot of flowers in I’m trying from seed it’s cheaper can’t beat it lv Irene 😘 xx
I had to watch this twice because I laughed at the 'too much of you' bit. Xx
Have just come across your videos Joe. What an amazing sized garden. Have always enjoyed your work on GW so will be a regular follower from now on.
Too much of you? Who's the fool who said that? You are who we come here to see!
Like the way you work Joe
Love your vlogs Joe. Totally agree re old tools. Picked up some fab ones from a charity shop this week for a pound each. I also agree re clocks, I love the lighter evenings. Been a long winter!
We’re farmers and we’d happy keep BST year round 😀 First time watcher. Lovely garden.
Love Irises🤩 Thank you for sharing your "dirty" work. It would be a nice addition if you put the plants names in the picture or as a list down below.
Joe we love seeing you!
So nice to follow you on your channel. I love "Garderens world" as well. You are lucky that spring has come, so you can work in your garden. Here in Oslo we still have snow, so I am looking forward to start working in my alottment.
You can't have too much Joe 😂
Just doing a similar thing in my garden. It does look like the Somme in this wet weather…but it will be great!
Your plantstation is a very nice cutflowergarden this year😃 you may will enjoy this and get new plant for the borders😃
You've got a beautiful garden joe. I've got half acre with a lot of cutting grass each week so I need to create more borders and bed's and reduce lawns so any tips of shrubs and grasses for bed's
Very informative viewing that was, ya can stan in front of the camera has much as you like maet, i'm listening. Hope it soon stops raining. Happy Gardening.
Please keep us informed on how the moved Peony responds.
Hi, just subscribed 👍 great video. Thanks
1:23 Too much Joe Swift on the Joe Swift Gardening channel is like moaning about there being too much tennis at Wimbledon!! Crazy. Great video… just needed more Joe 😂
I'd had laughed if that fork had snapped
Hi Joe just wondering what the yellow plant /“weed” is alongside the raised bed 18:32. Not sure that this is, but I’m battling with Lesser Celendine in my shady garden. What’s your take on it? Very pretty at this time of year but it’s becoming a big too invasive for my liking. Should I try to remove it all.? Would appreciate your advice. Thanks
@JoesCountryGarden

Yes, lesser celandine. It’s in some of the lawn areas and between raised beds so will mow over soon but not too bad here. As with all ‘weeds’ they’re only a problem if they’re becoming invasive or smothering anything you’ve planted. I’ll Keep an eye on it
After work? I assumed you gardened all day long, you're not in insurance are you😅
Jealous as all my agapanthus have died....
How rude! It’s your garden. You should definitely be in your own videos. Tell them to shut their eyes! 😂
Hi Joe enjoyed the video
Love your new channel. Digging and dividing plants is the best. Might I suggest you reduce the iris foliage by half to make the plants less likely to fall over in the wind?
