Life with my rats

What is it like to share your life with four pet rats? Watch my video and find out!
Alfie, Bertie, Theo and Oskar are now 1 1/2 years old and are still full of adventure and playfulness. They also like food which plays quite a big part in their life and they like snuggling up with each other and occasionally don`t mind a cuddle from me.

I got my rats 4 days ago and I've realised they help me with a lot of things. When I'm in the bath taming them they relieve my stress. They make me forget about what happened during the day.

Good to hear. I find too that rats are great stress relievers. Nothing is better than coming home from work, slightly stressed, and then to cuddle a rat :-)

Awwwe they’re so cute ❤️ my dad had pet rats when he was a teenager and until he was like 25. But not anymore by the time I was born. He would tell me stories about his rats and I always wanted one but my mom wouldn’t let us have rats :,( I need to buy a baby rat when We get a bigger place (I don’t have my own room right now). My mom and dad divorced a few years ago so she can’t stop the rats now!

Wow. I have three little girlies, and I know that the boys are a lot bigger, but wow! My babies are so small compared to yours! They are still technically young, but still!

You should see wild rats, they are much bigger than most pet rats. But I have seen some pet rats which were bred for size, they were huge! I had girls only once and they were smaller and more agile than the boys.

Nadine Mitschunas I’m pretty young, so this is my first little mischief. I thought the idea of rats was kinda weird, but not disgusting, until I met my cousin’s 5 girls. I thought that they were so much smaller than they were, and before I had even seen a pet rat, I thought they were around the size of a mouse. Boy was I wrong! It’s crazy to think that some of the wild ones, and of course the ones bred to size, could be bigger, and probably, almost for sure, weigh more than my little dog!

How do you get them to come to you when called? I wish I could let my ratties free roam around the house but I'm scared to death they'll hide under the furniture and not come out. I've never tried releasing them into the house, but I'd love to try. Are they fairly easy to coax back out into the open? My current free roam option is to put them on a huge folding table that I have, but I would love nothing more than to have them running around my living room floor.

+MrMarouka It is not too difficult to train your rats to come when called, the following method has worked with all the rats I had so far: I start training my rats to come when called a few days after they have moved in with me. As earlier you start as better and it works best with babies (but it should work with older rats as well but will take a bit longer). I only give food or a treat after I make a special noise (I click my tongue). So the rats become conditioned to this noise and after a week or two (rats are very clever so they learn fast) they come to me whenever I click my tongue. This training makes it very easy to get them back into the cage as I only have to call them when I want them to come back. It is very important that you always make your preferred noise before you give them food, so they learn that the special noise means food. Also the noise you make has to be exactly the same each time you use it, that is why I click my tongue as it always sounds the same and you don`t need any equipment/tool for this. Another thing I do is that I let my rats get used to roaming free in the house. Otherwise it would be too overwhelming for them at the beginning and they would just hide. So at first I let them getting used to me in a small enclosed playpen. When they are tame and easy to handle they are allowed to free range in the bathroom. If this goes well they can run around on the upper level of my house. If this goes well and they still come when called they can free range in the whole house. When I want to get them back in the cage I call them (click my tongue) and they normally come running. This works best just before breakfast and dinner time. If you have these meals always at the same time and end the free range with giving them their food the rats should come easily as they are hungry. Hope this helps a bit.
