Life with Father (1947) IRENE DUNNE

Фильм және анимация

Movie Class by PizzaFLIX: The film LIFE WITH FATHER (1947) was adapted from the 1939 Broadway play, which was based on Clarence Day's autobiographical stories about his family and father, a governor on the New York Stock Exchange. The Broadway production ran for 3,224 performances and still holds the record as the longest-running non-musical play in Broadway history.
Stars: William Powell, Irene Dunne, Elizabeth Taylor
Director: Michael Curtiz
In late 19th-century NYC, a stockbroker strives to maintain authority over his bustling household, but it's his wife who truly rules the roost.
TRIVIA: Since both leads demanded top billing, half of the released prints billed Dunne first and the other half listed Powell first. First-run theaters were required to these alternate prints and advertising alternated the same way.

What a wonderful movie!!! No profane words,no sexual content,no revealing vulgar dress on women, no bombs or explosions, and so much more. Fast forward 2022. Celebrities/actors have become gods,to be admired, worshipped, copied. Forget about christian values and morales demonstrated in this movie. No way. We've come a long way in America. In God We Trust, printed on our money. Wonder how much longer before its completely removed from USA currency?!?! God has been removed from everything else. Thank you for taking the time downloading what use to be. Refreshing, very enjoyable. If only we could see leaving God out of our country will bring consequences of untold horror.

I have had this book in hardcover for decades and have read it many times, yet I have never seen the movie until now. It was written by Clarence Day and he died the same year the book was published. Day achieved lasting fame in literary circles for his comment, "The world of books is the most remarkable creation of man. Nothing else that he builds ever lasts. Monuments fall, nations perish, civilizations grow old and die out; and, after an era of darkness, new races build others. But in the world of books are volumes that have seen this happen again and again, and yet live on, still young, still as fresh as the day they were written, still telling men's hearts of the hearts of men centuries dead." ....How right he was ,,,,As a writer, these were words that meant a lot to me, since my work will survive me like his work has so well survived him.

His tantrums and rages are not 'funny' to me and the Irene Dunn role is 2-dimensional cringe worthy and flat - Irene HERSELF hated the role. Nothing like a woman doing all the work and the man taking all the credit. Glad the next generation has seen this for what it is, nonsense. Lying and deception about reality seem to be the hallmark of the older generation. You can have a loving and stable home without this endless stroking of the male ego and the sacrificing of the female. No reason why the man and the woman cannot shine equally.

A time gone by when movies were promoting good manners and faith. No cursing or sex or any other vulgarity. I love the scene where they are in church praying and the pastor is thanking God for all of their blessings; how lovely and humbling. Sure, his misogynistic attitude toward women makes us laugh now days, and we are glad that that is a thing of the past, but the good family values, the respect for parent and adults in general, the pleasantries of social relations (good morning, thank, please, may I) are a delight to watch; they uplift us and inspire each one of us to be better individuals ourselves. This is a movie that leaves you with a good feeling in your soul; oh how I wish we could have some of this gentleness back!

Sam Spade Obviously you are an idiot; therefore, there is no point debating anything with you, your arrogance and cynical attitude gets in the way. Nevertheless, I remain of the opinion that in 1880 western society was more civilized than today and moral values still meant something. They might not have had cell phones but at least spreading your legs while swinging from a pole was not something that women aspired to!

There is nothing wrong with longing for a time when children spoke to adults with respect and women where treated like ladies! Thank you! This movie is a gem, I have loved it since my teens, in the 1970's.The color is so beautiful.I like the bedroom Clare and his wife had, it was large, airy, cheerful, and the pale blue wallpaper was pretty. The boys were cute, and as wealthy as they are they aren't brats. In fact, the father is the demanding brat. LOL. He sure is a tightwad, too, but I always thought he was cute and funny, and great at any role he had.The wife sure recovered fast when being told her husband would get baptized. She was as religious as Olivia Walton, both had shit fits because their husbands refused baptism.
