Life Under "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”: “I’m Not Going To Hide It.”

George Agundez joined the military hoping to “fix” his homosexuality. Instead, he ended up coming out professionally before the ban on LGBTQ service members had been lifted.

When you talked about seeing another man in the military in the gay bar I cried. That must have been a beautiful moment.

Bravo George, when we worked together I knew. You wore my favorite lotion from Victoria Secrets(Pear Glace), We smelled alike... It is no ones place to judge, but I have one problem. That's the fact that, you could just never be yourself. I've been happy for you, when I seen your pics knowing your able to be free. Live it to the fullest, and kill folks with a smile, who just don't understand, times are changing.

I remember when Calexico was an open field. In 1990 I, as project manager, designed and built the border crossing. In no time it was a metropolis.

I was in before dont ask dont tell but I still served my country and was honorably discharged, I am glad that anyone can serve openly now. When I was in I remember our platoon was sitting around before training and some one asked my sergeant how would you feel serving with a gay person and he said he doesnt care because he has been serving with them his whole career and we all were talking and no one had a problem with it accept for the politicians who never served.

As you told your story I could relate to you. I too was having a difficult time deal with being gay when I decided to join the Navy. I quickly realized when I join the Navy it was not going to fix me being gay but made me face it head on. I could go on but I am so thankful the this generation doesn’t have to go thru what we went through with “Don’t ask don’t tell”

What ppl don't realize is during "don't ask don't tell" they still asked and I told... a lie that is. I didn't want to get kicked out of the military for any reason. I knew what that honorable discharge meant and they weren't going to deny me of that after committing all those years to the navy.

@@babamarq I can totally agree with your statement. I was in the military for ten years and I had a TS clearance so I was always worried they may find out my secret.

In the 50 years since I was drafted into the military, it is so great and amazing that members of the military are now able to life as they are without fear as it was in my case. Should one check that question box as "yes" in 1968, there was a good possibility that the person would be rejected for service and given a 4F rating. Later, looking for work, nearly every employer was interested in your draft status because they had to save your job when your two year active duty was over. I think the Clinton fix was only a bit better because one did not have to lie but then one was open to blackmail too. After 9/11 we lost so many capable and valuable military members because someone was able to force one's sexual preference out in the open. They all deserve an apology and some type of monitary compensation as the Canadians just did.

It's kind of ironic how people talk negative about identity politics now as being some manifestation of a "leftist" agenda - which is a crock and not true - when it's the recent past and present that we see right wingers who chose identity politics in order to slander and abuse millions of gay Americans for decades.

I'm honestly not sure sure what its like serving under dont ask, don't tell. at sound value it sounds like its telling their men "mind your own business and keep yours to yourself" but from hearing bits and pieces here and there, its safe to assume its waay worse. I'm a fire fighter and in my country quite a lot of people are homophobic especially thugs and males in military organizations. even though you couldn't have been dismissed simply because your sexuality was found out youd still have to deal with your colleagues talking shit and giving you a hard time. sometimes if you report it to your seniors they may not take it serious. Henceforth i choose to keep my true sexuality under lock and key... if the guys talking sex talk i do as well, i just change the guy's name to a girl (don't judge me)

I love this story! I joined the Army in '07 and I was under the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy. I was secretly dating women, until Obama came through ❤️. All the higher ranks finally came out and I did as well. The funny thing is we all knew who was who, but we didn't give a damn as long as the mission was accomplished! We love who we love ❣️

that's very strange i live in the middle east I have never heard about people who willing to join the military being asked if they are homosexual or not why n USA you have to answer that question i mean if you are gay it has nothing to do with joining the military or any other kind of work for that matter
