The fact that some Wookiees see Chewie as the captain and Han as just this huge liability to him is just brilliant. :)

I'm glad that I read this book because it reveals that Rey has no memories on how she was left on Jakku. She also doesn't remember who her family is. There is only two possibilities on why she can't remember. Either someone had erased her memories, or she went through something very traumatic which caused her to suffer a big concussion. The book isn't just about how to survive and what she has done for many years on Jakku.

And everyone complains about Rey being a Mary Sue, one year and a half later. I haven't read this book myself, but from what I got through this video, Rey simply learned various skills that were important for her survival on Jakku, from flying to fighting to being a good mechanic and to being able to speak and understand multiple languages. Much of that also applies to Anakin and Luke, doesn't it? Can't remember them ever being called Gary Stus for that. Rey's use of the Force against Kylo and her victory in the lightsaber battle are far more questionable. Rey shouldn't have defeated Kylo with a lightsaber, but again, she knew how to fight and Kylo himself wasn't in his best shape. From her picking up that she could manipulate minds through experiencing Kylo's mind probe to having possibly heard stories about the Jedi and their abilities, there are explanations, even if they aren't necessarily satisfactory.

maybe people would not complain that much if those things were actualy explained in the movie. Also its pretty clear that that books only purpose is to cover the plot holes that JJ Abrams shitty writing created.

ΝΙΚΟΣ ΝΙΚΟΣ besides, ya know, the fact that the book was written before the movie came out, and the fact that the film's novelization (which was based off the unedited screenplay and was released alongside the movie) goes into a lot of these skills. But whatever, whine all you want.

Paul Baranek you do realise that the filming of the movie was finished before the book was released? Also could you please define "whine"? and also fun fact that book and the noveliztion of the film are not aveliable in the place that I live which means that I have to pay extra money in order to have them shipped here and that is a luxury s that I dont have Alex Greaney so in which parts of the movie those things were explained exactly? Eather way I dont care that much if Rey is amarry sue or not.The film has way worst problems

She's a Mary Sue because the movie doesn't explain why. She magically knows how to do shit making her a Mary Sue. The fact you NEED the books is just poor story telling and Jar Jar Abrams has proven to be a crap director. In Episode IV when Obi-wan meet Luke, he said, "I heard you were becoming a good pilot." That line alone helped us know that Luke could pilot a X-Wing with little to no problem. That was absence from the movie so when Rey flew the Falcon out of the blue that makes her a Mary Sue for it. It was poor sorry telling and I believe Kathleen Kennedy interfering with it that makes Rey into the biggest Mary Sue since Mary Sue herself. Judging by seeing the new Pirates movie, Episode VIII will be no different.

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK In THE STAR WARS comic, which is based off of one of the earlier scrips for A New Hope, Luke Skywalker (who's the Obi-Wan in this version as well as a high ranking general) teaches the savage wookies how to fly Y-wings and they destroy the death star with it.

That's a nice fun fact. But is there a canon explanation for it now? Because one of my arguments that Rey could be Han and Leia's child is because she could understand Chewbacca. Maybe she picked that up in her early childhood before she was left/abandoned on Jakku with whatever sort of memory loss. But now that travelers have come into the picture (and maybe Y-wing computers), it holds a little less water...

Just going to attempt to stop any more pointless Mary Sue comments. 1. Luke and Anakin were the exact same way in their first movies. Expect more failure in The Last Jedi. 2. Character Flaws / Development. Characters can be good a lot more if they have character flaws, as Rey does. She spent fifteen years alone, relying on nobody, learning how to do the things we see her doing. However, she finds it hard to let herself rely on anyone else, and doesn't like it when they do help her. Being paired with a kind, gentlemanly character like Finn forces her to work on that, as we see, when she realizes that Finn went into the metaphorical inferno to save her, when she thanks him.

It would have been helpful if the flight simulation equipment Rey has actually showed up in the movie. If that happened, there would be less criticism of her being a Mary Sue.

A Mary Sue can still be a Mary Sue even if there are explanations of their perfection. That's the thing that not many people are seeing -- she's still a Mary Sue, even though there are valid reasons for her being able to do /some/ things. They are still perfect, and that's the problem. Anakin, although being extremely strong in the Force, was an emotional wreck. I don't really need explaining for this. Luke failed multiple times and made tons of mistakes, therefore making him not a Mary Sue. Even when he became the "wise Jedi" in Episode 6, he still briefly turned to the Dark Side. Rey doesn't have any flaws so far. I say so far because it's possible that that will change. She might have been flawed before but eventually became perfect, but it's off-screen and therefore in the movie's eyes she's a Mary Sue. Also, books written after a movie shouldn't be used to explain a movie's flaws. It should be established on-screen. I love TFA, and I can't wait for the next movies, hell I even loved the prequels, but I can still notice flaws.

"people still bitter that a woman is a main character in a movie" Oh yes its clearly that people are all just inherently sexist pigs, and not that the character of Rey was just badly written in the movie. It's so clear to see how sexist the world is due to the colossal failures of other female led movies such as Wonder woman and Rogue One.... Oh wait? Those were good movies with believable characters and they don't get nearly as much hate. Coincidence? Nah, you're right - it's totally just cos sexism.

I'm not denying that there isn't a small amount of people claiming that. However, the large majority of people that dislike TFA dislike it due to the bad writting (Especially of Rey - who yes happens to be female). My response was simply to highlight the idiocy of claiming "People so upset that a woman is gifted" and similar shit like that. TFA isn't majorly disliked for having a female lead (otherwise WW and R1 would suffer the same fate), but instead it is disliked as people feel the main lead has inexplicable and unnatural powers that allow her to overcome all challenges. Like I said, not sexist but just genuine criticisms.

Yeah, it's not that's she's a Mary Sue or anything. TOTALLY because vagina just like the American 2016 Election. Hillary was totally trustworthy with emails and scandals she was in. Wanna hear something taboo? I rather see Jana Solo be the main character in the new trilogy OoO and I'm a male!!! Guess what? I have a logical reason for that, and it's not vagina power. It's for a huge reason... To keep the surprise of her brother turning to the Dark Side (if done right) and show the struggle of the Dark Side pull in the Skywalker-Solo family that her and Luke prevailed through while using her brother as a contrast. Shut up and look at these movies on an artistic level, sexism has taken over Star Wars and it's become a hive for man hating. The last two movies and i bet VIII and EAs Battlefront II campaign will prove my point as well. Want proof? I can give you unbias proof while your statement is pure opinion. I'm studying film and I want to MAKE MOVIES and i hate this movie.

Star Destroyer Apparently you haven't "gotten over it" otherwise you'd be ignoring this video and comment Patrick R Luke is literally the polar opposite of a Mary Sue. -Luke had to be saved from the sand people -Luke had to be protected by obi wan in the cantina -Luke had to have Han fly the falcon for him off the planet -Luke had to have Obi Wan shut down the tractor beam -Luke was helped by Han, Chewie and Leia to get off the Death Star -Luke had to be saved by Obi Wan sacrificing himself -Luke had to be backed up by a squadron of X wings -Luke had to be saved by Han Solo in the trench run -Luke destroyed the Death Star using force sense-a very basic ability even untrained children like Ezra can use. -Luke was impatient and quick to anger (he got annoyed at Yoda) -He failed the Jedi test in the cave -He got completely defeated by Vader even after months of training with Yoda -He gives into his anger on the Death Star II and very nearly falls to the dark side Anakin -Has to be saved from Maul by Qui Gon -Is quite arrogant -Is extremely flawed (eg he massacres the sand people) -Needs to be rescued from the arena by the Republic -Gets defeated by Count Dooku -Lets his anger cloud his judgement (Kills Dooku) -Is unable to keep calm when he doesn't get a seat on the Jedi Council -Is not morally perfect-he betrays the Jedi council and kills children before trying to kill Obi Wan and his pregnant wife -Becomes Darth Vader Meanwhile Rey -Beats up some thugs by herself -Manages to fly and pilot the Falcon without a co pilot -Stops the bounty hunters herself -Stops the rathtars herself -Fixes the Falcon herself (when Han Solo couldn't do it) -Uses a Jedi mind trick with no training by herself -Escapes Starkiller base and her cell herself -Beats Kylo Ren herself. These are all things Rey did in the first movie. Luke did nothing by himself in his first film, and indeed in the entire trilogy only succeeded in doing TWO things alone (running from the Wampa and beating Vader, and in the first case had Han save him shortly afterwards and in the later had his father save him directly afterwards). You can come up with whatever in universe explanations you like for this, but that will never change the fact that it is terrible writing-for example, there's nothing about Anakin's speech about sand that is unrealistic but that does not stop it from being bad writing. And the reason why it is bad writing is the fact that it does give Rey any kind of character development-she starts off amazing and just stays like that.
