LIFE OF SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES: SERVING WITH LOVE.
Saint Martin of Porres (1579-1639) was a Peruvian Dominican lay brother, renowned for his piety and compassion. Born to a Spanish father and a freed slave mother, he faced prejudice due to his mixed-race heritage. Despite this, Martin dedicated his life to caring for the sick and poor, earning a reputation for miraculous healing and humility. Known as the patron saint of social justice and racial harmony, his selfless acts and devotion to God led to his canonization in 1962. Saint Martin of Porres is celebrated for transcending societal barriers to embody love, kindness, and service to humanity.

St Martin was my mother's patron saint. When she told us that he was a black saint I laughed in my mind and said that she is losing it 😊. She was devoted to him and ask for his intercession all her life. Thank you St Martin for your care and help. I always tell people that ask that were brought up on St Martin, as is he if some kind of baby food. Thanks for the well narrated biography. It explained a lot of questions I had about him. Not least of which was about his rank in his monastery. But then, the lives of the saints are meant to lift us up and help us to live holier lives. St Martin, pray for us 🙏🛐✝️

Your mother was an especially gifted and holy woman! What wonderful “baby food” the Saints could be!! Our children today could use this food!! How better to feed the spirit and body at the same time it is blossoming and growing!❤️

St Martin de Porres was my year 2 class’s saint a couple of years ago - the children all loved him and liked to imitate his ways (helping with cleaning, being kind to animals, helping sick friends etc). I so enjoyed that year!

Saint Martin is one of my favorite saints, along with St. Rose who was his contemporary in Lima. My only objection is to the way in which Juan de Porres, the saint’s father, is portrayed. It is true that at first he did not recognize Martin and his sister as his offspring. But later he provided them with an education and gave money to their mother, Ana. For the time, Juan turned out to be a relatively good, loving parent, much more caring than many of the “natural” fathers of the time. Otherwise, this is a fabulous biography of Saint Martin de Porres. Very well done.

I inherited my love and devotion to St. Martin de Porres from my dear mother. She always referred to him as "poor Blessed Martin" even after he was canonised.
