The Indian Emergency of 1975-1977, a period of political turmoil when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties, is briefly mentioned in Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi. In the novel, Pi's father, a zookeeper in Pondicherry, grows nervous about the political situation and decides to sell his zoo animals and move the family to Canada. The Emergency is referenced as a factor that prompts the Patel family's decision to emigrate, setting in motion the main events of the story where Pi finds himself stranded at sea with a Bengal tiger after the ship transporting them to Canada sinks.
