It's an easy job if you're in shape. All you really have to do is pay attention to what cases you get, set the heaviest ones down at the base. Just grab the case, set it down where you want it and where it'll strengthen the pallet (preferably interlocked, if possible), and keep moving to the next location and it's an easy day for you. The biggest issue I see new guys running into is handling the same cases multiple times while on an active order and that'll kill your performance time (in my warehouse, for Roundys) and make you in danger of being fired. Also another simple tipped that helped me alot is to put bigger, heavier boxes around the edges of the pallet and all the smaller, lighter boxes in the middle, thus, creating a stronger pallet. Again, don't forget to interlock the boxes, and you'll be set and won't have to wrap as you go and just wrap your finished pallet by the end.

That's one reason I like working in a smaller warehouse without the automation and RF scanners and computer control. I can pick with a pallet + hand jack, or reach truck, or cart (I have all three readily available) bring it to my own private staging area, build my own skids, do all my paperwork (labels, packing slip) and send the ready-to-ship pallets to our Shipping dept. All they have to do is arrange a truck to ship it. It is literally the best job there.

We need more of the good stackers in the distribution center. Every single time, as a Cap 2 associate, whenever I have to pull pallets from the frozen dairy truck that comes in from the DC, a lot of the times we get eggs on the *bottom* part of the pallet, which is a big no no. Pallets are also stacked weirdly. Please take better care when stacking!!

  • @3dgarify

The reason eggs are at the bottom because if you put them on top of all the product last. There's a big chance of the eggs being cracked or getting cracked while on the road. And will contaminate all the food on that pallet. Hope I answered your question

  • @Elurin

Proper stacking is a lost art. Whenever I put together my skid, I have two rules: Heaviest stuff on the bottom, light stuff on top. 2. build the skid square to the corners of the pallet. That way, the reinforcing corner pieces that I use fit properly. Oh, and I always triple wrap my skids since most of my stuff is going across country or to the USA. My job is picking transfer orders to our branch warehouses across the country and all the USA customers/agents (plumbing fittings)

Unfortunately with the pressure to meet standards when picking for an order, we just place the product on the skid on whichever side is closest to us. This allows us to meet productivity standards. In other words we don’t care where we place product as long as we are able to do it fast enough

The biggest issue with these jobs is the efficiency ratings (items picked per hour) which are always never fair. Not all orders are the same. Some are bulk that don't require you to move too far and you pick multiple pieces from one spot. That naturally inflates your rating. I had dispersed orders so my efficiency rating was low compared to others. We had a pregnant lady that was supposedly the second fastest picker according to her rating. It's all bullshit and unfair because management will threaten you with your job if your rating is low.

Also never call items early. If it tells you to pick 10, wait till you actually pick 10 THEN call it. Calling early messes your case per hour up because the system also takes into consideration how long it takes you to get to the next location. So if you call it, have to pick 10 AND drive to the next spot that just adds unnecessary downtime. Try to be the first one to get a pallet at the start of the shift. Most places start the trucks off with the biggest pallets first, this will help you get a good beginning case per hour, the system averages out your cph so maintaining your speed is key. Small pallets F your cph up, so pray for large orders!

But it do my man, this is beyond valuable knowledge. You have just taught me more about the talkmans system than my trainer/managers have, and the last 2 weeks or so I had went from doing exactly what you said not to do, calling the slots and picks off before I even pick the amount, thinking it would speed up my %. Recently ive been constantly moving and not being OCD about my stacks which obviously helps, but ive also been taking the time to get my picks and then calling off the amount, and its boosted me from the 85% range to now making it to 100-105% usually. My biggest issue now is honestly navigating around packed isles or letting a lift driver slow me down. I know downtime is a thing but my groove gets fucked up when I have to slow down for a couple of minutes. Anyways thank you again for the information. If you have any other advice its greatly appreciated

I'm 43 yrs old 6' ft. 345 lbs. I have my cdl and can make more money as a driver or go back to the oilfield. However, I love the workout. I walk anywhere from 18,000 to 20,000 steps a day. It's really more like jogging. My feet are destroyed. Both ankles and feet have been in pain. I left work/sent home one day because I couldn't walk no more. My feet felt like they were gonna explode. And I couldn't bend my foot downward. My ankles were so stiff and felt like my ankle joints had broken glass in them. Couldn't even hold balance it hurt so bad. Better just to fall. Anyway saw Dr., podiatrist, got new boots, ankle braces, and insoles because I'm very flat-footed. I also was put on a steroid for 6 days to help with inflammation. All that helped, for a day or 2 and kept at it. Still working through a lot of pain. Only able to pull mid 50's %. Being that I never missed work, and show up on time, they offered me another position, less physical, but a 2 dollar pay cut. I felt insulted even though I understood where they were coming from. They said I had 2 weeks to decide. Kept selecting in pain everyday. I decided I would try cortisone injections as my last resort. A week later I got a cortisone shot in each of my ankles. Took about 3 days to kick in. Still had some pain, but it was very manageable. I was able to move around again and began pulling 70-75 percent. It's been about a month and the pain in my feet and ankles have returned, however I'm pulling over 85% now. I have to get up to 95% for two weeks straight to graduate. I still feel like I'm going all out and barely able to pull out 86% or so. Easy assignment (one pallet) I can pull a 120-130%, but the long tedious 2 pallet, 270 cases 70 minute long assignment, I'm stuck at 80% if I'm lucky. I'm trying everything. My stacking is way better. I'm learning how to stack for the assignments, by memorizing the assignments. I think I could read my unit better, and Jack placement could be better. Working on it. My ankles and feet are killing me though. Saw my podiatrist, told him I didn't want another set of injections yet. Expensive, $120 dollars for 3 weeks of little pain. Also I hear, cortisone injections shouldn't be taken less than 6 months apart. Do damage to tendons. So he prescribed me mobic. On my 3rd day on it. I don't feel any difference yet. Still in pain. In the morning, out of bed, my ankles and feet are in super pain. Like in shock. I can't walk. I have to grab on to the wall to stay up and go take a piss. I go to work limping. After my first assignment though, I'm able to jog it out. In pain though. Today was a bad day. Painful. Still pulled an 86% for the week. My goal for training is 80% so I'm above what I'm supposed to be. But I'm still not where I want to be. Really feel like I'm going all out. Hopefully I get better and be able to pull the 95% and hopefully more.

@Scott Leoski i recomend living in arkansas, rent is cheap here and the jobs pay good. I guesspeople get paid more as a order filler in walmart distrubtion centers becuase walmart was founded in arkansas
