Really do not agree with the estimated expenses: At 180k, the take home pay per month for New York taxes must be somehwere around ~8k 3k -Rent 1k - Groceries 300 - Utilities Miscellaneous - 1.5k(even this is on the higher end) Masters programs can cost 50-60k from top universities(1 to 2 years of savings can offset and pay that off), 1000 dollars per month on groceries is a lot(for 2 people maybe it is a correct estimate), I live in California where the costs are comparable; you don't need to spend that much; you could live a very comfortable life in 180k and save money too...the key is saving which is not accounted for in purchase power parity, if you save 3-4k a month, that adds up to a lot over time compared to a 30-40 LPA salary in India Even at his estimated high costs, the monthly expenses would be: 5.8k At this rate, he would still save 2.2k. This is where the value comes in. No disrespect here just wanted to share my perspective :)

Exactly, I totally agree with you Walmart isn't there in NYC but target or costco doesn't cost you 1k dollars a month, that's just too much I also feel other expenses are kind of a lot 3k can get you a good apartment even in nyc, also studio apartments are way more reasonable, not to mention if you stay on sharing (ofcourse shared apartment but own room),you can save even more I think 800-1k dollars for miscellaneous is more than enough Because nyc and cali is expensive,if you live in other places of US like Texas, Georgia,Seattle or say NJ it's even more affordable because of low taxes and affordable rent Also these states give you the feeling of true American life, new york city is good but very different and just doesn't feel like real America

Great work, Anshuman. Loved the content. Haven moved to the US, I have a slightly different opinion which I’d like to share. But as mentioned, not all opinions fit all. 1) IMO, the biggest flaw in his financial planning was to get the MBA and bury under debt, given he’s already got his bachelor’s in India. In today’s world and economy education/knowledge can be accessed at nearly free of cost. Gain competence and network. It’s rather easy to find job in the US if you’ve the edge. And I’m sure his current startup didn’t need him to have an MBA. 2) He shouldn’t have paid 2700$/month as rent and instead bought a house. Rental yield is about 6-8% in the US and loan interest is 5-6%. He would beat the Indian real estate disparity by a huge margin and rather gain than loose. Like he mentioned you can get loan at 5% down payment. He could have rental income to pay off the loan even after moving out of the US and retain the asset growing at roughly 8% annually. 3) Like you already pointed out, he should have stayed in the US longer to work on his capital/net worth prior to moving back to India. But I guess this is personal. At times personal well-being stands above financial cushion.

  • @sumeetpandey6521

But as an Indian may be you don't need to buy a house for many different cases, Also in usa where 90% is loan amount mean and 10% is only down-payment that means at current mortgage rate of 7.2% you might see home price falling down by half in next 15 years Let say a clever person buying a house in accordance to you 7 cr home 70 lakh downpayment and pays 15 crore in 15 years for that house and house price corrects to 3.5 crore as it happened in case of Japan Now let say india property market booms as it fastest developing and that 1 cr villa becomes 2cr in value Usa debt to gdp 140% india with corrected base year is at 65% , govt of india has high capex expinditure expectations than usa govt. Debt is responsible of Inc gdp in case of usa and slightly in case of China.

@@sumeetpandey6521 I hear you, but there is too much speculation in your numbers. Interest rate is credit driven; for example, I have been quoted 6.1% last week, fixed term, which you can always re-finance given the rates come lower in the future. And 50% drop in valuation after investing at nearly all time high interest rate is not how market historically worked, atleast in the US. Plus a low rental yield in India and an unpredictable real estate market with colossal over-valued building projects at an unemployment rate over 8%, I give way to skepticism. There's more to GDP than that and believing USD to INR value will go down in the next 15 years as compared to today (1 USD -> 83 INR), given there has been about 4% average year to year USD to INR growth historically is being stressfully optimistic. Macroeconomy has always favored US; FED? I would love to see India as you foresee and as they say "Tere muh mein ghee shakkar" as I am invested in India too, but I do not see an unprecedented change in how the market has worked historically within in the next 15-20 years. If it does, I will have my Swades moment before I anticipate. :)

Hey Anushman. I watch all your videos and really like your content. But I am disappointed by this one. The numbers mentioned by Nayrhit are far from reality, even for high cost of living areas like New York. This will give your viewers a very wrong idea. For example, when I was earning 200k in the Bay Area 2 years back, I was saving 80k (or 65L) easily. I was living in a luxury apartment, had a BMW 3 series, and was traveling frequently. If possible, please talk to other people living in the US for a better comparison. If you're earning 24 LPA in India, to have a similar purchasing power in the USA (considering the PPP), you'd need an annual income of 104761 USD (You'll need to calculate this based on the 4.13 PPP rate). According to the World Bank, the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) between India and the USA in 2023 is 4.13. This means that $1 in the USA can buy the same amount of goods and services in India as 4.13 INR can. Remember, this is a generalized comparison. The real purchasing power can vary based on many factors, like where you live and your lifestyle choices.

Take this interview with grain of salt. 3 years in usa where someone was student for 2 years is not enough exposure. He hasn’t even completed his student loans yet. 200k pay with iit background and mba is just average salary. Many companies provide higher salary for techies. You can live a decent life with 150k salary as well. You just need to prioritize your expenses. There are numerous places you get apartments cheaper than 2700 for 1bhk without compromising on safety or traveling too much as well. Cook charges you 20-30$ an hour not $300. You can also get indian tiffins for as cheap as 10-15$ a person. Depends on your preference.

I think when you get someone to do these shows, he / she needs to be fully equipped with the data, right? You cannot have someone who says ‘I think’, ‘I’m not sure’ and we end up hearing numbers far from reality! Or do frame the questions around what he / she is really sure about. Do consider this as feedback for your next episode (if any) with people living abroad! Cheers!

@@mentalist9167 ‘costs change with time and location’ is not a valid counter here. Moving back from NYC in 2023 obviously means we require data of costs in NYC in 2023. We are not expecting the costs in the rest of the US or in 2005 from this video. Approximation is alright but not guesswork / suppositions. Anyway, this was my thought after watching this video. Felt this was extremely superficial and sketchy.

I dont understand why these days Indians spending crores for an MBA! its a big trap !! Especially in the USA, MBA doesn't make your job search any better ! Having masters or certifications in your filed of work may help, but over all your actual work experience matters more. Do MBAs only when the company you are working for needs it for your career at the company while working and taking educational support (tuition reimbursement) . I have seen lot of people from top institutes like IITs coming here for expensive MBAs here, without understanding the F1-OPT(1 year for MBA) and MBA jobs dont sponsor H1B, so you will end up doing any other IT job, so that MBA and 1 crore loan is waste. $150K in NYC anyone from masters degree from average Univ with less fee and with good tech skills can get it ! MBA from ive league or top notch doesn't really matter for Indian students looking at selecting in the H1B lottery It will be only for someone who wants to build their own brand who has alternate immigration solutions !

Bro the saving seems huge if you are spending in India, not in US. Few of my friends has done MS in US and i still work in India, in terms of PPP, i am way higher than them and still saves a lot considering my saving and spends is in India and for him the saving is high if he thinks of spending in India but since they are not planing to comeback the same becomes lesser than me as now he has to think in terms of spending in US, that's the difference plus he has to do MS which costed like 70lcs. By the time they clear their loan, my saving will be huge. The only difference they say is better infra which i feel is not a big deal for people like me as i stay in my hometown not even in big cities as i like small cities, lived in bangalore for 3 years but didn't liked it at all.

If your savings are less than 30% of your salary then you will forever stay in the middleclass social hierarchy. If you wanted to retire rich in 20 to 25 years before the age of 50, then try to save 50 to 60% of your salary and invest in mutual funds, stocks, real estates and FD's, for atleast 20 years.

Indian equivalent is 1.5 crore /3 = 50 lakhs per annum. 100s of IIT / NIT /IIM graduates having age 21-25 are getting these packages. The worst part of US is medical facilities.
