Allan Douglas Davidson was born on May 14, 1873, in Fitzroy Square, London. He was the son of Thomas Davidson and Charlotte Douglas, née McHeath. His parents married on July 6, 1871, at St Marylebone, London. Allan's journey into the world of art began at St John's Wood School of Art, and he furthered his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. His talent shone early, and in 1897, he was awarded a silver medal for painting a figure from life. Allan also refined his skills at the renowned Académie Julian in Paris.
Davidson's career as a figure and portrait painter was distinguished. He not only created captivating artworks but also shared his knowledge as a teacher at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts. On July 2, 1903, he married Kate Beryl Skeffington at St James's Church in West Hampstead, London. The couple had three children: a son named Roland and two daughters, Beryl and Marjorie.
By 1911, the Davidson family was living at 9 Lyndale Avenue, Childs Hill, Hendon, London. Allan, then 37 years old, resided with his 30-year-old wife Beryl, their one-year-old son Roland, and employed a nurse and an indoor servant. Allan's artistic achievements continued to flourish. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and presented notable works at the Royal Society of British Artists, including 'The Mill, Walberswick' in 1902 and 'The Marsh Mill' in 1903. His talent was also recognized at the Royal Miniature Society and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1920.
In 1921, Allan achieved the honor of being elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He was also a member of the Langham Sketching Club and contributed to the Queen's Doll's House with a beautifully painted miniature. Allan spent time living in Walberswick, Suffolk, with his sister, Winifred Agnes Van Oss, and her son, Tom Van Oss. His work continued to be exhibited from various locations, including London and Seaholme, Walberswick.
Davidson's artistic influence extended to Norfolk as well. Between 1927 and 1929, he was a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, and he displayed his creations at the Wroxham Art Gallery in 1923 and 1926.
Sadly, Allan Douglas Davidson passed away on April 19, 1932, at Millcroft, Mill Road, Walberswick, at the age of 55. His wife, Kate Beryl, lived on until 1973, passing away in Herne Bay, Kent.
