As many of you know, Shaun and I have an AMAZING son named #Daxton! We adopted Dax into our family in 2008, and have since learned that he has autism. Today, we are answering some of your questions regarding #autism to the best of our ability, based on our own personal journey with Daxton.
✅ Are you curious about how we raised our 6 kids in this WILD digital world??? Pre-order my NEW BOOK called "Viral Parenting" HERE! www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/Vi...

We are not doctors or health care professionals of any sort. We simply want to be super raw and honest with you guys about this huge, impactful part of our lives. With this platform, we have been given an amazing opportunity to educate, and share experiences about a topic that affects so many people. Any time that we hear families openly talking about their personal journey with a loved one with ADHD and autism, we always end up feeling very connected, and understood.
We have learned SO much just from raising Daxton. He is such an incredible young man, and has given us a whole new perspective on patience, as well as compassion. Being his mom has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but also one of the most rewarding. We have come across so many spectacular people who have helped us along the way, and given us so much inspiration. We continue to learn new things every day, and we are constantly growing as people because of Daxton. We are so lucky to have our little handsome man in our lives! ❤️
Autism does not define Daxton. His talents and skills are often far superior to ours. We tell him it’s like his super power.
While it has been challenging for us to adapt our parenting to accommodate how his mind works, we will do absolutely anything we can to give him the BEST chance to succeed in his dreams and goals for his life.

He is a smart, handsome little guy, and very loved by you guys. He will continue to grow and be an amazing addition to this the world. Keep on keeping on through the hard times, and embrace the good times. You two are doing wonderful.

I have autism, i still call it aspergers, i was diagnosed as an adult 8 years ago because no one could figure it out "what was wrong with me". But autism isn't a mental illness like you put it in with bipolar. It's just how your brain is wired. the older i get the better it gets because I am able to figure out how to cope with sensory input on my own and other things.

i have a brother who’s autistic, and all of us are adopted from korea (there’s 5 of us). i’m gonna be honest.. it’s hard living with him! i was in the same class as him for 2 years, and he was treated very different than the other students. he wasn’t able to write, so he used an ipad to write and read. lots of the other kids would bully him, and i would stand up for him even though he was soo mean to me at home, but he can’t control it. my parents realized this and my mom created a school for kids who’re dyslexic, have adhd, anxiety, etc. he’s doing much better today even though he is very mean to me and he can’t control his impulses which can be very scary

Well, he’s not so angry now that he’s old enough to understand (he’s 17 and she just turned 21) but he also doesn’t want to be around her. It breaks my heart, but I understand, she is hard to love. This makes me so happy; I am 19 and I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 7 and have level 1 Austim. I have an IEP. And I can tell you that it gets easier when they find something they love and learns to deal with the episodes themselves. I also don't like being told I had a temper tantrum I like to call them episodes because I get embarrassed when other people call them that.

As a big sister in an Autism family (2 children and one parent with Autism, and the other two children and parent with Sensory Processing Disorder) I gotta say right on, y’all. You are doing so much to make sure Dax succeeds and it shows!! Autism can throw a lot of hurdles at you and when it’s someone you really love, it can be incredibly stressful. But it’s also an incredible experience for growth for everyone involved. I’m so glad that you have gotten to a better place for Dax and yourselves, and that he has an incredible family as a support system. Keep doing what’s best for your family, and don’t let judgement eat at you. As the saying goes, if you’ve met one child with Autism, congrats! You’ve met one child with Autism! Every person with the diagnosis is a unique individual with different needs. Much love from my Autism family to yours 💜

If Daxton likes to move around and be physical I don't know if you guys go to a gym but that is what I do and it has helped me so much with my ADHD! I can now Focus for at least an hour and a half in one sitting versus only 15 minutes. At one point my tutor on my phone had recorded like the steps of what I need to do to get my homework started. Like she had me set a timer on my watch for a certain amount of time and I had to stick to it! And there were some subjects that because of my lack and inability to focus like barely passing college algebra, she would not allow me to listen to music while doing math. She was the best person on Earth! She still is I don't get to see her very much but she is an amazing person! Until I got to college I never really got the help that I needed until I met her and she helps me so much along the way. Whether it was emotional or academic it just it varied depending on what was happening in that moment. Now I also go to therapy to express my emotions and basically learn how to cope and that has helped me tremendously!

You guys are role models online, I'm sure a lot of young kids will be watching this, and I think it may be through watching family vlogs that I garnered a great respect for my parents and didn't have as much of a teen rebellious stage.

When I saw the video I was really concerned at first but then I watched it and realized there was nothing to be concerned about!! The fact that Daxton has autism doesn't change my opinion about him. Honestly I have never noticed anything that would assume the fact that he has special needs. What I have noticed is that he is a very smart little boy. I think he is just as incredible as any other child and that is the truth. Now that I know that he has autism, I just think he is extra special and smart as before and, like he has said in previous vidoes, if he wants to become an astronaut, he can. His disability can't stop him!! Love you all so much!! 💕💕💕

As I’m watching this it reminds me of the kids I help teach in the special needs classes at my high school. There’s this one student who’s the sweetest little firecracker I’ve ever seen. She also has ADHD and I’ve voluntarily made a desk for her bc she has to move around. So I made it adjustable for her. She always wants me to hold her hand and sit with her while she does her work. I love her so much and wouldn’t trade her or changer her for the anything in the world. She’s my best friend and I couldn’t ask for anyone else to fill that position.

I’m so happy to see you open up about it and not be ashamed. My brother has about a level 3 Autism and he’s 12. It’s comforting to know you aren’t alone, that there are others who go through the same struggle. There’s no guide book or right way for Autism. Each case is so different, that’s why it’s so hard to diagnose. I’m so happy that you aren’t the parents who try to “cure” their child, that you love him and accept him the way he is.

This video was so inspirational. My younger brother was diagnosed with high functioning autism when he was in about kindergarten to first grade. I remember even at a young age that my parents didn’t treat us the same and that it wasn’t fair. Obviously now as a young adult I realize why they didn’t parent us the same way, but hearing stories directly from parents who have also experienced having a child with high functioning autism is really eye opening to what my parents probably went through when we were younger. Thank you, for sharing your story and spreading awareness about this. Both my dad and sister have been diagnosed with and struggle with high-functioning autism, ADHD, developmental delay, and sensory disorder. Part of why it's such a struggle is unlike a physical disability, people can't see the real struggle and don't understand what our family goes through on a daily basis. My sister was diagnosed at age 3, and is now 13. She is so freaking smart, and her art is unlike the art that I've seen of any "normal" person. She is so intelligent, especially in language arts, history, and foreign language, her scores are off the charts. However, now, as a teenager, it's still a daily battle. Anything can set off a tantrum, like if someone is chewing gum, if her jeans are too tight, if she doesn't want to clean her room, even just if there's any change in general. She needs a lot more time to process any change. As her older sister, I've also been like her little mom. Let me tell you, it can be easy for us to ground her, take her phone, take her art supplies, but it doesn't change anything because sometimes all she needs is a hug and for us to tell her she's loved and we're here for her. Another struggle is now that she's in middle school, she hates feeling that she's different than the other kids. This leads her to have depression and social anxiety and it's really difficult for her to have friends. But on a more positive note, she just our lovable Annette and it does get better. She's one of the most loving caring people I know and I know that even when she's an adult, she won't be independent, and she will always need our help, but she has progressed so much from when she was little and with her incredible intelligence and talents amaze me every day and I know that, along with our love for her, she can get through anything.

This was very refreshing to hear. I almost feel like you were talking about my life ( minus a few kids and in a colder climate! ). My son is 13 and was diagnosed at 5 1/2 with PDD NOS ( though, it isn't technically an autism diagnosis anymore, now he just has autism and a whole bunch of other diagnosis ((ADHD, OCD, SPD, etc)) ). It has been such a long, wonderful, crazy, scary, fun, and frustrating journey. It is always changing as he is growing and changing himself. We have had so many challenges that have shaped our family. Not going to lie, most of them have been HARD, almost brutal. I think the most challenging part ( besides meltdowns ) is trying to parent in 2 different ways. My girls ( 9 and 15 ) are very typical kids! They adapt and conform pretty easily to the rules and "standards". But, sometimes they have a hard time seeing that our son needs to be parented differently. It is definitely not always a piece of cake for them, but luckily they understand. We have to have my son take a break when we get home from places or when we see he is just getting overstimulated. He hates it, but he knows he needs it. We have just called it chill out time. I think I am going to start using Brain Break and see if that makes it better for him!
