Life Inside A Christian Cult | How I Escaped Bill Gothard And The IBLP (2023)

Inside a Christian Cult... Lindsey Williams, from Amazon's Shiny Happy People, escapes the clutches of Bill Gothard and the IBLP!
This is part 2 of our interview with Lindsey Williams, a courageous survivor of Bill Gothard's controlling cult Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Lindsey gives a chilling account of being personally groomed and targeted by Bill Gothard as a teen, and reveals the toxic dynamics that enabled Gothard's predatory behavior and silenced women's voices.
Despite immense adversity, Lindsey found the strength to break free and reclaim her power! Now, following the Amazon documentary Shiny Happy People, Lindsey is working to shed light on the horrors of cult life.
We are so grateful she felt safe to share her harrowing journey.
We hope you enjoy the episode! Make sure to send Lindsey some love on Instagram at @thecultchronicles and don't forget to leave a comment and subscribe to @preyvspredatorpodcast!

The first 20 seconds have me bawling. 😭 This was my life❤ It has taken me so long to unravel the self-policing programming that came from Parents, church and the abusive ex husband. Lindsey Williams, _thank you_ for putting words to this deep pain~ so many have found themselves in this very abusive and confusing predicament!!

I love how this is getting talked about. Growing up in a Pentecostal home was not much different. I was raised without being allowed to have friends, and I was raised to fear my parents, and we feared God removing us from our life if we allowed the world to grab our attention. If people could only understand the fear for our lives if we did not submit to our parents and abuse. I still to this day struggle with thinking I am doomed to hell because I haven’t been to church in 20 years, and I am so done with feeling bad about myself when I spent my life fighting to be perfect! I still struggle even though I know better now.

It's so fucking WEIRD that he would literally pick young girls out that he didn't even know who they were, would just pick them by their looks, and invite them to his office alone. I cannot fathom how so many people didn't think this was a problem.

I was never raised in IBLP, but it's a shock that it's all about Bill Gothard. A few moments ago, even while at work, I decided to take a sneak peak at IBLP's sight, and I think I read something in it about obeying, "church government" and he had First Peter 5:1-11. I've Studied First Peter 5:1-11 At my home. Hs Bill Gothard even Read What First Peter 5:1-11 actually says? The problem, he puts patriarch above the husband, and First Peter Chapter Five says NOT to do that. "Neither as being lords over God's Heritage." so I guess Bill Gothard didn't bother To Take A Closer Look At That Passage. He's got some similar ideas as John Bevere who said, "if your preacher says to wear blue socks, purple pants, and a pink shirt, that's what you're going to wear with a happy face." and that's what IThinkBiblically refers to as heavy shepherding. No, stop lording over God's People, Protestant shepherds.

I am so against homeschooling : while I understand it could possibly be a great choice for a very small group of kids - in general ? Homeschooling is a recipe for poor or misguided information and the separation allows for abuse to go on unnoticed . Most parents, even if well educated themselves ,that doesn’t make them qualifies teachers . Most murdered children were homeschooled . Most homeschooled children have enormous basic education gaps and too many aren’t experiencing group sports , music , field trips are alternative view points . What a disservice to a community or nations children and succeeding generations . Thanks for sharing your story with such insight and openness .

Homeschooling CAN have a place for families and kids who struggle. What America fails at, is oversight. Welfare check ups to make sure the parents are accountable to not harming their children AND giving them the education they deserve to be successful.

The truth is you don't get out of a false religion by going to a seminar. Talking to someone will not get them out of it, showing something visual to them will not get them out, going to someone's seminar will not get them out. What gets a person free of false religion is repentance and after that God gets them out. In order to get out of any false religion you've got to have God now. There is no way you can get out by yourself. Let's say everyone that attended Bill's seminars were already in a false religion when they attended it. Going to his seminar would not get you out then. Chances are you would remain in that false religion. I went to a Bill Gothard seminar and I learned that people like Bill and the Duggar's all have Josh Duggar's problem, it involves children. That is what God showed me. This a very easy. Don't send your children to a unmarried man's ministry. If people like Bill have a problem like Josh's that explains why they tell their people to have lots of children. It is just logic.

It is Baal worship. It involves child sacrificing, that is why children are involved. Our churches are doing it, the Duggar's are doing it, Bill is involved. They never got free. It is the reason why everything is happening today with children.

I’m sorry I feel really confused by what you’re trying to explain in your argument. People weren’t going to Bill’s seminars to get out of false religions. They were going to IBLP seminars as a booster pack to enhance their walks with Christ. The blind belief in a man who touted his relationship of deep profound insights with God is the problem. (Along with Bill himself being THE problem). I will be honest and say it doesn’t make sense to me to rely on God to make it better when all of this was done in the name of God.

This young lady does NOT represent ATI or IBLP with accuracy of Bill Gothard. 45 years of being a part of this ministry was blessing from the age of 12. I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. IBLP and ATI are like Tiktok and IG today- providing resources for individuals and families equipping them to grow in there roles. Maybe listen to some other perspectives as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dq2urdKBl8LIkco.htmlsi=MWi_F8go_wG8WF06

I've never once said I represent ATI or IBLP. I have been very consistent in telling exactly what happened to me. I have never once tried to take away or gaslight anyone else's good experiences. To deny your positive experiences in ATI and IBLP would be wrong of me. I am glad to know you had positive experiences. What I still fail to understand is why anyone would want to silence and deny me the negative and inappropriate experiences I endured. Is it that you believe I am a liar? Is it that it shakes your belief system if you DO choose to believe me? Are you worried that with more than one person saying similar things that are negative if means you have followed a man who is fallible? Do you not believe that there are christians who are capable of doing wrong things? Every interview I do, I try to be clear, concise and consistent. The one thing I will not do is be silenced by the few who refuse to believe me. I hope you never experience this in your life as it is not the thing I would want to be known for or by. I have far larger goals for my life than speaking out about the deaf ears that abuse falls on when it comes to communities of faith. I fail to see your christian heart as you defend your blessed life and deny that I could have had a very bad one. Continue to drink the Holly fruit punch if you must. It bothers me none. I will continue to discuss my story with those who are open to hearing, believing and considering that CHANGE is possible in a religious ministry who consistently covered up misdeeds.

I am loving these videos - but calling guests "prey" is very disturbing to me. It is dehumanizing language. Prey is an animal not a person. While I understand that your guests were preyed upon by predators, something about applying that word to human beings who are still trying to process the trauma that was perpetuated upon them seems...tone deaf? Depersonalizing? Cruel?

Awesome question Amazing E. and thanks for listening!!! Webster's dictionary defines prey as "a person who is helpless or unable to escape attack...". Failing to understanding you are prey is what MAKES you vulnerable to predators. Knowing you are prey awakens you to the existance of predators and your inherent vulnerabilty. Prey need a language to understand and identify predacious dynamics and tactics happening to them and to be able to communicate them to others. These behavious are often SO covert, coercive and nuanced that predators are able to hide in plain sight meaning prey fail to get the understanding and support they need . We are exposing predators, their patterns and their techniques so PREY can learn to identify, survive and hopefully avoid predators for themselves and for people they love! NOTE: Predators target strong people with strong and beautiful pro social traits so we are proud to call ourselves prey.

@@preyvspredatorpodcast I see, so you are saying that who isn't a predator is prey. You're not, as I initially believed, solely singling out victims of abuse and calling prey? In that case, I understand. Thank you for explaining your rationale.
