Rest here is the dream of many tourists who go to Italy: it is in Liguria that you can visit ancient Genoa, visit the musical San Remo and the colorful cities of the Cinque Terre National Park, sunbathe on the most beautiful beaches, learn the unforgettable taste of local cuisine and get a lot of amazing impressions ...
And the very movement around Genoa is a real bliss. Picturesque beautiful views, smoothly replacing each other - my favorite part of a trip to the Ligurian region.
Sanremo is the second largest city in this province - the most famous resort on the entire Italian Riviera. The city of flowers and the festival of Italian music is located 25 km from the French border.
The city acquired its modern name thanks to the Genoese bishop Romolo, who, spreading Christianity in the 7th-8th centuries, settled as a hermit in the grotto of Mount Bignon at an altitude of 1298 m. Romolo, which in Ligurian dialect sounds like San Romu.
"San Remo is the most magical place in Italy," the Polish queen admired in 1647. Until about the first half of the 19th century. only the Genoese and pirates were interested in this extraordinary beauty town on the Ligurian coast of the sea. The land in this region is not suitable for agriculture, and there is little fresh water needed to sustain life.
But in the second half of the 19th century. San Remo has become a favorite vacation spot for representatives of famous European families, mainly English and Russian. Initially, San Remo was known precisely as a winter resort. And the real spa boom began in 1855 thanks to the novel by the Italian writer Giovanni Ruffini. In it, the author colorfully described nature, unique landscapes of the surroundings, mountains and unforgettable views of the slopes.
In San Remo, a lot is connected with the royal house of the Romanovs: the Empress embankment, named after Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Alexander II, and the Orthodox Church of Christ the Savior, unique for Italy, built in 1913. As in Nice, Russian aristocrats spent the whole winter here.
Sanremo is home to first class hotels, restaurants and casinos. Here tourists will find well-equipped beaches, a developed tourist infrastructure and all conditions for sports. In addition to the Italian Song Festival, Sanremo also hosts a flower festival, fashion shows and sailing regatta, car races and boxing fights, tennis tournaments and rowing competitions.
The construction of greenhouses around the city has transformed the landscape and made San Remo Italy's largest flower market. Southern flowers bloom here all year round, since the climatic resistance of the environment is reduced to a minimum - the average temperature in January is + 15.5 C, and in summer + 26-28 C.
Sanremo is a large yacht port. While vacationing in San Remo, tourists can visit the nearby fashionable French resorts of Nice, Cannes and the city of Monte Carlo in the Principality of Monaco. In the midst of the summer season, fairs are held on the main street of Sanremo, where you can buy not only food, but also clothes; the main shops are located on the same street.
