Life Before Land: Bangladesh’s Disappearing Shorelines | Dying Earth: E3 | Featured Documentary
Фильм және анимация
Distant weather warnings are now full-on alerts in Bangladesh as it faces the brutal effect of climate change.
Bangladesh is a country severely affected by man-made climate change. Located at the foot of the Himalayas and facing an open delta, it is increasingly battered by devastating typhoons and severe flooding.
Life Before Land explores how this Southeast Asian nation has developed sophisticated storm prediction systems and a shelter network that saves thousands of lives from frequent typhoons. Still, the land is being swallowed up by ever-rising water levels. Entire communities are disappearing, leaving behind staggering numbers of climate migrants. Left homeless and without any means of earning a living, millions have been forced to resettle in the slums of Dhaka, the nation’s capital.

I was born in Bangladesh. I know my country very well. But I feel shocked when some so called vlogger and youtuber make videos of Bangladesh and say the country is developing by seeing some eye-catching buildings and corrupted skyscrapers. I believe this is the real face of Bangladesh. Thank you for Al Jazeera for giving such effort to make this video.

The real job of any neutral media is to report the truth from all sides, but Al Jazeera does not. Al Jazeera is busy spreading as much negative news as possible against the current government of Bangladesh, their main objective is to help the fundamentalist cycle in Bangladesh. The whole world knows that there are many problems in Bangladesh as well as there have been many improvements. If not, thousands of young people would not have gone to the concert by buying a ticket of 5 thousand takas to listen to the music of Pakistani Atif Aslam. Eileen's Punjabi shop used to sell hundreds of Punjabis worth 10/20 thousand taka. Mullah Maulvira paid lakhs of rupees and did not get a chance to ride in a helicopter to perform waj. Thousands of mosques with AC would not have been built in the country.

I don't expect Al Jazeera to report positively on current Bangladesh. If there was an Islamic fundamentalist government instead of the Awami League government, they would have made and reported the opposite story of improvement. However, despite the huge pressure of 180 million people in a small country of only 55 thousand square miles, Bangladesh is in the top 10 in many agricultural products. Bangladesh has achieved a lot of progress in the last 15 years after leaving the world champion of corruption during the BNP Jamaat period. Yes a large uneducated group is a big challenge for us. Climate disaster, carelessness of people, corruption are still there in the society. But those who belittle their own country to outsiders are traitors and unscrupulous. The Bangladesh government did not say about the economic development of Bangladesh in its own words, these are the words of the World Bank, ADB, IMF.

Al Jazeera is never an honest media. They report on why there is no democracy in countries like Bangladesh but not on why there is no democracy in their own country Qatar. It was Al Jazeera who wanted to embarrass the Bangladesh government by showing the graves of the dead in Rana Plaza and creating the story of Hefazet Islam's fictitious corpses. This Al Jazeera has tried to embarrass the current government of Bangladesh by creating various stories about an army chief of Bangladesh and his family. They create news on the agenda of radical Islamists.

We are not a piece of gold in the world. We assume we are. But, the truth is nobody outside of BD thinks BD is a gem/gold. We are a poor country trying to keep or uphold our head high. Sadly, not a single leader or Allah can help us if WE are not aware of the future we are heading towards. We need educated politicians who will champion the idea of climate resilience and lead civil movements to make people aware of the hazards and to build communal programs to tackle these.

My friend, you have missed the pith of this docu. It's not about slandering Bangladesh but about the future Bangladesh is facing soon enough because of climate change. It's about how nearly 2 million people will be displaced because of this inevitable changes in geography and livelihood. It shows that we already have a huge climate migrants living in Dhaka city in inhumane situations. This docu shows that Bangladesh have done monumental improvement in terms of disaster preparedness and forecasting which could contribute as a source of knowledge and understanding for the rest of the world. But we need to understand fully the threat looming over us caused by climate change. Overlooking these and only indulging, boasting in the advancements we have made so far cannot we face the climate induced challenges. We need to be aware of the actual degree of the problem. This docu is all about this.
Most People in the US do not know or do not care about what’s going on in Bangladesh and if they did would probably blame them for their plight. And how hard they work for so little that they have. Stuff like this helps keep me grounded as to how fortunate I really am as a regular working stiff in the United States
Thanks for Al Jazeera. The real documentary of Bangladesh 🇧🇩
Saleemul Huq sir died last year. He was the epitome of our climate researcher. Its giving me goosebumps to see him after his death. (A Bangladeshi)
Thank you for this documentary. I'm from a completely different part of the world, I knew some things about Bangladesh and the challenges she and her people face, but didn't realize just how bad these challenges and how strong the people are. I hope the world will not leave them alone to deal with this for much longer, we have to stop with all our petty bullshit and face this together.
We need help to built sustainable infrastructure 😓. Dhaka has becoming unlivable. Improved disaster management system in rural area is needed to stop people becoming climate refugee. Nobody want to became a refugee. Its sad to leave you birth place 😩.
খুবই গুরুত্বপুর্ণ প্রতিবেদন।
The factory with the ladies sewing, reminded me of when i was young. Exact same sort of tin shed. Hot temps around 35 celcius in summer most days. Women in rows just the same. King Gee shorts etc made there. Now many of our clothes are made in Banga's (Bandgladesh). At Wulkaraka, Ipswich, Qld, Australia. About 1970. The rubbish dump was at the end of the street and the toilet was a tin can in a little wood hut outside. No hot water. 50 years and massive change since then. We have air con now and so many cars and we all have a tv now. I could go on and on. I pray these people get a much better standard of living and security for their future (as much as possible on this planet).

There's a huge difference between rich and poor people. You don't know because this is not common in Bangladesh. This drama is made by the Western agent Al Jazeera who doesn't even talk about Palestine like other Muslim media do.
Thanks ❤. Bangladesh 🇧🇩 My country.
I can't figure out why Bangladeshi media do not highlights this kind of information. if they do it may concern other people. Ideas will come

It is a global issue. If local media highlight it will be no worth. Global media is effiecnt to focus on it. Bangladesh never get enough funding from global leaders to overcome golbal climate change effect.
I am very thankful to al Jazeera by sharing such documentry. It was helpful and my brain blindness gets some brightness now.
Heart-breaking stories. Saleemul Huq was a true fighter against climate change. Respect for him.
The Aljazeera shows us the reality. Thank you so much from the heart of the core. And again thanks a zillion.❤ From- Kushtia, Khulna, Bangladesh.
Finally someone voiced about this. What is the point of solutions if it never effectively produce satisfactory results.
Fisher Man Bissojit Ray got a great voice. Al Jazeera or anyone can use him for voice over. His voice could be a asset for him and a way of income. and way to lift himself out of this misery. Great job Al Jazeera. Be Blessed. Be JUST.
This is the real scenario of the bangladesh thanks to alzazeera for showing this horrible conditions and i think its very important to take several steps for dhaka city because they are human they have their voice we have to save their life 🇧🇩
This is very unexpected and hurting. Government most think about these deserving and needy people, Allah is the best planer🙏 May almighty bless Bangladesh. Love and prayers for brothers from Afghanistan.

This is a fantastic report. But at the same time, I loved what Prof Saleemul Huq said. Bangladesh is a land of solutions, not a land of hopeless people.
Very nice documentary 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thia is the real scenario of Bangladesh.. Here everyone talks about the so-called development but no one talks about climate change, corruption and political situation. We the citizens of Bangladesh want our democracy to be stablished again. We want to live a healthy life . Thanks Al Jazeera for showing the real scenario ❤
It's true Dhaka is unlivable 😢. I worked in a hospital with an 8k salary, where I had to pay 6k, including meals and house rent.
This is heartbreaking. We have been displaced 11 times due to river erosion. after than we left and relocated in another town.
