It's not plastic surgery fellowship. It is plastic surgery residency. After 5yrs of general surgery residency ,you apply for a 3 year plastic surgery residency ( it is called independent pathway).

Great video Dr. Webb, thank you. US MD, US DO, or Caribbean MD, it's how hard you work. Read so many forums and if you believe everything you read, no way a Caribbean IMG or even an FMG could ever become a Plastic Surgeon(super top specialty). It's just impossible:) Hard work rewards those who work for it. Congrats Dr. Pearce and best of luck in your new practice!!

Thank you Armando! And yes, I was told over and over and over again that there is no way you'll ever get into plastics going to a foreign medical school. 3 people from my Caribbean med school class are now plastic surgeons. It's not where you come from, it's how hard you work for what you want.

this was super insightful. aint even started med school yet but ive already been interested in learning about the plastic surgeon training + transition into private practice. theres tons of content showing off the glitzy side of having a successful private practice, but nothing that really documents the process of getting there. looking forward to seeing more on dr. pearce's channel as well :)

Hello Stephanie! Thats a great question. I'm going to address that question soon in one of my videos but to give you an idea, most practices start off taking out about a $300,000 to $500,000 loan from the bank. It doesn't cost that much to get your office ready to open the doors but its a good safety net to keep things funded until all sorts of factors fall into place and you have a steady stream of patients coming in the door.

Hi Cameron! Actually something that I didn't dive deep into was my path in med school to where I am now. I started out wanting to be a surgeon. My 3rd year I changed my mind and applied for Anesthesia residency and didn't match. I did match however into a general Surgery Preliminary year (only 1 year guaranteed contract). I worked hard that year and wound up getting a categorical spot at my program but I had to do the first year over again. So two intern years back to back and then completed the remaining 4 years of the General surgery training. After that it was on to Plastic Surgery in San Antonio.
