Life as a Filipino coconut harvester 🇵🇭

■ PHILIPPINES, LEYTE: Fresh coconut juice is one of the most delicious beverages in the world. Little did I know however the amount of labor that goes into harvesting these delicious fruits. In the Philippines I was lucky enough to be invited to see this process with my own eyes.

Just for information from my little knowledge. A 10 hector coconut farm will produce about $150 a harvest 4 times a year. Unlike this farmer my Brother in Law will hire a man who harvests the coconuts with a long pole from the ground. His trees are twice as tall as these. He also must pay an oxen to carry the coconuts back to the house and helpers to work at shucking. The copra is dried and sold and the husks are turned into charcoal. After paying everyone he will end up with $100-150 dollars 4 times a year. Not a easy buck for sure.

How do these people survive on $600 a year? Do they have their own food farms, or the food and house are also very cheap?

@@jamesfurgerson5476 Generally they have family farms that have been in the family for years. They will grow there own vegetables and try to have other crops such a bananas. It is a tough life. Many young people leave the farm for the cities to try to find a better life. Mcdonalds employees have college education and if you are old forget it. The minimum wage is about $10 a day but most work for less. Keep in mind Rice and commodities are a set price basically the same as we pay so money doesn't go far. Then many don't have a refrigerator so food doesn't last. it is a vicious circle.

Tim is kinda heroic. Sure he's overweight, and out of shape. But he takes all the ribbing and jibes with a laugh and a smile, and has a very cute wife and seems genuinely pretty happy. He's got more going for him than most of the people I associate with on a daily basis. Definitely seems happier than the people I work with.

in the Philippines we consider the coconut tree as the 'tree of life' because you can make use of its parts from the leaves to its trunk.. a coconut tree is a source of food, lumber, cleaning materials, fuel for cooking, medicine, etc... it's like a Swiss army tree..

Hi HARALD!!! I FIND YOU VERY AMUSING AND Kind-hearted. Here you are enjoying your discoveries about the simple filpino lifestyles. I just want you to know that during world war I, doctors at that time used coconut water as a substitute for blood transfusion whenever they ran out of blood. That means the composition of the coconut water and the human blood is very similar. The difference is the nucleus of the blood is iron making our blood red while the coconut water is calcium, transparent water. That water, specially the young coconut is very good for your kidneys. So drink it as often as you can. Thank you also for rewarding the hard-working dad. God bless you always!!!

Hello Harald! This was very interesting. I didn't know how the Filipinos climbed the trees. Now I know. In India they don't cut the trees like that. They just scale the trees with belts around their waist.. I heard that the Filipinos made charcoal from Coconut Shells but I've never seen them make it. It was great to see the pit where they burn them... Very smart people.. The other videos I watch about the Filipino life, mostly in Bohol only shows the farming and trips to town.. They also show how they build their homes... Looking foward to the next video..The very best video I watch is about the life of a young guy and his girlfriend. His name is FinnSnow and everyone in the Philippines loves him. He is always helping people there. He's really a very sweet guy..🍃😁🍃

Fantastic video, it reminds me where I grow up watching my grandparents harvesting coconut. We made the coconut into a copra which is then turn into oil. They remaining coconut shell will be grill and turn into charcoal. People will use it for barbecue or if you have an old fashioned iron we use charcoal too. At present my dad carry my grandads work along with his brother and sister. Its not a great deal of income but they'll get buy.

It's not easy the life of a coconut farmer. That's why you gave a money to a farmer. That's a big amount to them. And I'm sure he just can't express in English how thankful he is for the money sir. Thank you for the big help you gave to a hard working father. I salute you.

just watched this and its really awesome how industrious Christins parents are! if you want to know more about charcoal making, here in Nevada during the Silver boom of the 1860s the Basque and italian immigrants made charcoal in huge stone kilns (ward charcoal ovens) it was used in the processing of the ore during that time. very interesting
