Life After H&G

Ойындар

H&G was a very special game, very special indeed. In fact, it was very nearly unique.
Fortunately for us, there is at least one game out there that offers 3-way strategic, fast-paced, combined arms action. It just happens to have more lasers than we're used to.

    Heroes & Generals 2 doesn't exist and probably never will. There's no evidence it's in active development. The closest thing to an H&G sequel is the fan project Hellborne. hellbornegame.com/

    @@Passance Now this really makes me upset now. I seriously thought TCM was working on the sequel of the game. I really miss H&G now. It was the only game that played good on my budget laptop. I cannot afford expensive computers. I started playing in 2015 and have over 2,000 hours invested in the game. No games for me since H&G died. Part of me feels sad in a way. It was fun getting drunk while having fun with my friends online. Anyway, I will check out your link. Thank You.

    Many H&G vets sympathise. The sequel trailers seem to have largely been smoke and mirrors cobbled together from public assets. That said, H&G was hardly a well optimized game for old hardware, especially in its later years with flamethrowers and whatnot. It never ran very well on low end hardware compared to some more austere games like, say, Deep Rock Galactic. As I said in the video, Planetside 2 is really the only competition at the moment. The strategic-scale FPS niche is in a sorry state. If you can't stand Planetside for whatever reason then yeah, you're gonna have to wait for Hellborne or some other game like it.

    I really miss H&G. I started playing in 2016 and played until the end. 1651,5 hours played. Although of course I knew the exact date the game was shut down, I just managed to realize I will never be able to play this game again. In a few years I´m probably going to watch old videos from H&G but I´m already starting to miss this pure nostalgia game.

    Since 2014 over 9 years i did always come back to H&G. I tried some other games but they didnt give me what H&G did. For me it was the perfect mix between a tactical and action shooter. It was at this perfect point in between ARMA boredom and CoD fast paced insanity no other game is. I also loved to depth of weapon modding, which mods turn a gun from a 5 hit killer to a 4 hit killer and what impact which heavy set badge did have for example. Clan play in war was great even tho towards the end it was mostly a sweaty cheese fest against cheater clans. I tried out Enlisted but i was done with it after getting forced to fight full equipped sweats with nothing for two days but with a complete mess of a progress system. It was the lack of H&Gs game pace and its progress system i noticed and couldnt proceed. Such a shame that it was murdered for a cheap cash grab attempt... I really miss this funny little bastard of a game. It was just my shooter.

    I really miss playing H&G. I first started playing it in 2014 but I actually first played PlanetSide 2 earlier than that. Despite that, Planetside 2 never managed to capture my interest the way H&G did over those years. I have started playing PlanetSide, then stopped again for years after a few days or weeks, at least 3-4 times over the last 10-11 years. It's been about 3 years now since I last played it. Enlisted and other WW2 arcade or tactical shooters are thoroughly inadequate as replacements. Enlisted is so unbelievably shallow compared to H&G. I think it has to do with the WW2 Vs sci-fi theme for me, even though I do like sci-fi. I'm just far more attached to WW2 than PlanetSide 2's sci-fi universe. Those WW2 guns, uniforms and vehicles are so iconic to me, they attach you to the world you are fighting in and make you think of the real thing. It felt awesome finally unlocking that legendary Sturmgewehr or PPSh, and every gun, vehicle and hand grenade was overflowing with historical tales to tell. Despite all the locations having the same maps(definitely something they could have improved on), the fact that they were supposedly taking place at real-life locations also built it up for me. It really added to the experience fighting a desperate battle against the Soviets at Berlin, or trying to prevent the enemy from crossing the Alps or the Dnieper, or knowing that losing this major city would lose the whole war. PlanetSide's world and weapons, really have nothing more to them than what the game has decided to say. I just don't feel as attached to my gun, my character, the worlds or the war. Despite all that I might give it another shot, again now that H&G is gone forever and there doesn't seem to be any incoming alternative.

    Follow-up on this. I gave PS2 a shot, ended up playing for about 2 weekends and then just stopped. It just didn't catch and hold my interest, same as before. However this time it did seem different, in that the game seems very depopulated! Only one continent open at a time and even then often either sparsely populated with players or they are all crammed into one small area. It was far more populated the previous times I played.

    Ah... I created my account back in Summer 2014 when it first released on Steam and I've logged roughly 1k hours. A lot of what you say is true; Heroes and Generals was unique, it was really a melting pot of so many different playstyles and whenever battles flowed well it was insanely fucking epic. Why did it die? Because of the poor choices taken by the developers. You can say what you want about vets like us in the community, but the problem was truly the developers what they tried they truly messed up. I digress man but what a great game, I will forever fucking miss it. God speed you magnificent bastard o7 HnG...

Plus, if you did need to go, there was no leaver penalty and you got all the rewards you'd earned up to that point, and someone else could drop in from queue to take your place. KZread isn't an income source for me, so I don't really depend on popularity of the games I discuss or the demand for content for them. I'm free to talk about whatever shitty old 2012 combined arms shooter takes my fancy, and if this video only has 500 views a year from now, I lost nothing. What's certain is, this is a game where it's very very easy for anyone watching to make a free account and come join me for the next adventure on the public discord. It's community-enabled, and that's more attractive to me than any rubbish about demographics or branding. I'd rather have half a dozen people see this video and come join my outfits than have ten thousand people watch me make boring, derivative drivel for Enlisted or BattleBit or what-the-fuck-ever and rake in a few cents a month worth of ad revenue.

    After playing enlisted ever since h&g shutdown, i realised i miss and don't miss h&g for different reasons. For one, tanks and planes in enlisted aren't that o.p like h&g unless you're playing against a full team of elite battle pass players. Also there's less toxic players in enlisted, unlike h&g which was full of them. However h&g was unique, i do miss the plane and tank mechanics, and the feeling of being able to run around with someone on your team blowing up tanks and shit. In enlisted it feels like everyone is doing their own thing, there's no communication whatsoever.

    I agree that planet side is very simmilar to H&G but the thing I don't like about it is how, because of the large open maps, the game is heavily vehicle focused, which is made worse by the fact that tank gameplay in planet side is pretty bad and alot worse then in H&G. H&G tanks being slow, having low turret rotation speed and low visibility, made playing them extremely fun. In planet side tanks just feel like big infantry with free third person view, more gun and more health.

  • @Passance

    @Passance

    10 ай бұрын

    Let's see. There's a much simpler component and damage model. No exposed commander. No coax MGs. Lower velocity. Better accuracy. Much faster movement and rotation.... The tank gameplay is definitely simpler and less nuanced. That said, all I heard anyone say about tanks for like 6 years was bitch about how armour 2.0 ruined the game and Planetside's tank gameplay is basically armoir 1.0 but tanks can do the scout car thing and see in 3rd person. Rotation is faster, but AT grenades are stronger and traverse is still limited so infantry can still outmanouever and kill tanks in cqc, especially light assaults. I actually like the way vehicles can only be M-killed at very low health, because being tracked or breeched on the first hit in H&G felt terrible. There are serious tradeoffs, none of which I think are as severe as the very low velocities, but they fit into the gameplay cycle perfectly imo. Planetside's tanks are healthier for the game than HnG's ever were.
