Life After Dreadlocks // Ending My Dread Journey

In this video I talk about life after dreadlocks, and ending my dread journey.

I enjoyed having dreadlocks so much until right up at the end when they became infested with lice... However, I was ready to let them go, and welcomed the growth that would come with shaving my head!
I can see myself doin dreadlocks again once I have grown my hair nice and long. :)

I so relate to this... almost 2 years ago, I nearly shaved my head to a verrrrry short pixie. Having dyed it many colors since I was 13, I had honestly forgotten what my "real" hair looked and felt like. Having almost no hair, and now seeing my natural hair come in more and more has been a meditation of sorts, very powerful. I also find myself loving my natural hair!

i shaved my head after a break up and had really bad depression and it was so liberating and i've never felt so beautiful with my natural beauty and i fell in love with myself and i felt exactly how you did letting go of all the negative energy! i love you so much

I shaved my head to start over after 2+ yrs of dreads.. idk if I'd recommend that. I went thru a serious depression a few weeks after. Like just bald lol n felt so ugly! But for me it was a experience that I needed. It's been 4 months since dreads for me, & I'm now going to put them back in with extensions. I'll have to use string to get them to stay.. but I've missed them soooo much!!! Really give it much thought before shaving dreads off... It's actually a huge decision! Sending love from Austin Texas 😘

Thank you for saying the piece about letting go of beauty and feeling an obligation to be pretty! I’ve learned a ton from your videos but that is without a doubt the most widely needed piece! Beauty comes from the inside out, and it helps to hear it from someone like you too

you really hit this on the nail! I recently cut my dreadlocs at the beginning of this year after 4 years of being loc'd and it was such a drastic change from turning heads when I walk in a room to feeling like I was just "regular" again and it really takes a lot to overcome and appreciate whatever hair joinery your own. it was such a beautiful time in my life and I'm excited for this new chapter. thank you for sharing

  • @madamehogan8553

I did not have dreadlocks, but I was at at point of feeling "defined" by my signature hair, which was a specific wavy cut and bright copper henna'ed for many years. It was such a departure from my real hair, it took a ton of maintenance and time, money, effort.. and I really attached my identity to it. One day my husband asked,'Do you ever wonder what it would look like if you just let it be?' and I did. I cut it VERY short, down to the root to get all the fake color and damage out, and for about 3 years kept it completely cropped, to re evaluate myself really, without distraction. It was much deeper than I thought it would be and made me consider my whole idea of beauty. I am only now letting it grow back, its own color and texture, and loving it, having learned to love myself the way I am. It is fun to play, and hair should be played with, but when you reach the end of that, there is much to learn and connect with. Thank you for posting this!

It's really wonderul that both of you can come on here and share yourselves with the world 💕 I feel like I'm opposite of you in that at 30 years old I feel extremely liberated and empowered by starting my dread journey.... for the second time! I’ll be combing out my dreads in a couple days 🙈and I feel it’s time, as silly as it sounds I really feel like I’m letting go of a big part of me. I thought I was just being sentimental 😂 I’ve had my dreads for 3 yrs maintained them and grown them all on my own so a lot of work has gone into them. Excited and nervous about brushing them out but I’m so glad you made this video cuz it’s eased my mind knowing my thoughts and feelings were shared. Anyhow! Thanks bunches

Thank you for sharing the various stages of your dread journey! I am in the process of brushing out my 4yr old dreadlocks. (obtaining video and pictures of the process to maybe share on KZread..???scary) I decided to brush my locks out because I no longer felt connected to them, I was feeling more selfconcious about my appearance than ever before. I appreciate what dreads have done for my hair. Before dreads my hair was so damaged, bleached, thin and lifeless....now as I'm picking them out my hair is long! soft healthy and my natural color actually fits me! 4 years of no chemicals and using good oils and not processing have done wonders. It takes me 1.5-2 hrs to pick each dread out. I am encompassing this process as part of my dread journey. Felt the urge to share a little about what I'm in the middle of right now. 13 dreads picked out, 33 to go! I'm using lots of conditioner, detangling spray and a large weaving needle to pick them out after soaking in hot water. Hope you have a magickal day!

New follower here. I can relate sooo much to your hair regrowth journey but in a different way. I’m a Muslim convert and I Veil my hair and face. I used to model and see my “beauty” as something so important not just for myself but society. When I started veiling I had such an inner exploration that happened. I was able to really self reflect and I found myself almost embarrassed at times for how much I focused on the material side of myself. I actually feel extremely free veiling myself.

I've always identified myself with my hair. I've always felt like I hide behind my hair & it's been a big part of how I interact with people. A year ago, I finally dreadlocked my hair. It's been a wild, emotional year, but it's over. I absolutely love my dreadlocks, but it's just too much now. I'm currently in the process of combing them out --I'm down to five left! It's been about a week & every dread that I comb out makes me feel so much lighter & so much like myself; I felt like I got lost & so far away from who I am & who I want to be this last year. I cannot wait to wash my hair without any dreadlocks!

I have lately been thinking of shaving my 4 and a half year old dreads. I've been emotionally unstable since the pandemic started, so am not sure if I'll regret shaving them later since I've been so proud of myself for managing to grow my locs to shoulder length and they look so BEAUTIFUL! On the other hand, I'd like to see if shaving would ease some of the negative energy I feel surrounding me and start a new journey of re-growing my hair. I'll just document my dreadlocks journey before I cut my hair (when am ready and sure) and I'll have something beautiful and positive to look back too in future.

Until I completely decide on whether or not to get them I like to do hair wraps, or fairytale dreads as we call them at church camp, in my hair and other's hair

Before I started my dread journey my hair was almost to my butt but it was in really bad condition because I never really cared about it. I only took the time to shampoo it and detangle it once every 3 weeks or so. Now with my dreads is a totally different story! I take the time to wash it and part it every 3 to 4 days, I blow dry it if its wet at night and I do so many different styles with them! Anyways Ive always thought that if I ever wanted to have loose hair again I would brush the dreads out without caring if the hair would be damaged or not because it was already damaged before so, who cares? Now after hearing your story I decided that if I ever want to have loose hairs again Im going to cut my dreads because they have thought me how beautiful and awesome my hair is so a fresh start is what my hair deserves after how bad Ive treated it for so many years. Lots of love sent your way!

The point if trimming ia to counteract a bunch of things; mainly split ends which if not trimmed, continue splitting all the way up the hair shaft which damages and weakens it leaving it susceptible to breakage, hence no length retention. So yeah, trims are best for length retention if you notice ragged ends.

I just would like to comment about the not trimming your hair to make it grow comment. I am a hairstylist and yes if you have absolutely no split ends your hair will grow extremely fast if you don’t cut it. However if you have 6 inches of nothing but split ends your hair will NOT GROW. Because it will just continue to split. And if you have to iron straight hair to make it smooth is a sign of having a lot of split ends. I do love your videos. And thanks for all your info. You have been a good help to me for my dreadlocks.

Miss Golden Glow! I would really like to hear more about how you cut out cheese, sugars, meats, smokes and drinks! I remember you mentioning it in your saturn rising video, and I am really trying, really struggling. I am 27. Quit drinking 3 years ago, but still smoke, trying to quit. And quit Sugar. Oh man. Meat is easy to stay away from, but the sugars and the cigarettes....boy... I would love to hear about how you overcame all of, your journey from recognizing the problem to self resolve... So much love for you Love Love Love

I brushed mine out a couple months ago and it took at least 100 hours over the course of 2 weeks. My hair wasn't damaged at all, and in fact was way softer than it ever has been before dreads. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that I have curly hair haha. I guess all that time without treating my hair with products or bleaching/dying revealed it's true form. I've been thinking lately about having dreads again, and in fact regret brushing them out at all. I've decided to blame it on a long lasting 100 hour moment of insanity.

I recently had to comb out 53 dreads that I'd had for four years. Took forever but I didn't want to go back to short hair again. I got lice as well but my infestation ended up not being that bad. I caught them pretty early. I used coconut oil with tea tree and lavender oils to kill the lice and it worked pretty well. I've always heard that you should use oil or conditioner when you comb out dreads but I found that with my hair combing was waaaayyy easier when it was clean and dry as opposed to saturated in oil which made it stick together more.

I have a disorder called trichotillomania so I have been thought a lot of head shavings and I've been trying to grow my hair out for 5 years and I've gotten so caught up thinking that if my hair is longer I will be happy and people will think I'm pretty and at some point my hair was at your length but the sides were shaved and I look back at pictures wondering why I still wasn't happy with it I'm in such a bad place now and I wish I could be as down to life as you wish me luck in this coming year to not need a hair cut

i have a question that i think only you can answer. i started 2 years ago freeforming, got about 15 dreads and fell in love with the in between stage and started to brush the rest of my hair when i washed it. here i am 2 years later and i'm wanting to finish what i started. i have a couple of shoulder length dreads, one about 12 inches long (the Big Guy) and the rest are about 6 to 7 inches. the rest of my hair is dry curly caucasian hair but extreme body and almost shoulder length when i don't pull on the curl. how would you suggest i proceed? keep going freeform or put in the rest in one go and then let them do their thing? i want as much length out of my dreads as i can. i have not experienced any shrinkage from my other so far.... (sorry for the lengthy question!) xoxoxoxoxo
