    Thank you for another interesting and informative video. I look forward to each of your videos. Call me a geek (my wife does), but I find this stuff is fun. My guess would be that the two engine configuration was not very fuel efficient and that the cost of maintaining so much redundant hydraulic machinery was the 991's ultimate un-doing.

    Another great video from you, the 991 is one of the most beautiful Liebherr excavators ever built. Today are more 991 in pennsylvania or is this the only one ?

    Great documentary. Do you ever learn the history of the machines you document, such as why they parked it? I saw the diesel tank cap was off and the edges a little rusty - take it this one had a fatal mechanical problem? Or, do companies park them just because they are old? What would it take to get this machine running again?

  • @PAmining

    Oh absolutely! It's always interesting to learn about the particular machine I am filming...and some pieces I've filmed have quit an interesting history! Equipment can get parked for a variety of reasons but age and maintenance is the primary cause. I was unable to find out why this machine was parked. I could have been because it was problematic and very expensive to maintain due to the cost of parts.

    A Liebherr 992 was the first face shovel I ever saw in person, loading a fleet of 60ton Euclid R60 rigid trucks at an opencast coal mine. As far as I'm aware, it was the only 992 ever imported into the UK. The site closed in the 1990's but I've been informed that the 992 shovel still exists although now owned by another company. No pictures or video's I'm afraid!

    Nice video, not seen a machine like this one. Here in the UK Liebherr machines enjoy some popularity, they do have a reputation for being expensive to purchase and run but seem to rely on the quality angle. Like Mercedes and BMW etc.

  • @PAmining

    That's what I've heard too. Here in Pennsylvania, these machines are not as popular because they are harder to get parts for and expensive to maintain.

    PAmining a lot can depend on how good the dealerships are and, more importantly, if you've got a dealer nearby no use if you've got to travel 100's of miles just to get a small but urgently needed part

  • @PAmining

    @PAmining

    frmerrin2 If I had to make a guess, I would say the reason it was shut down is because it was problematic and hard to get parts for. There's a reason why there are very few Liebherr excavator's working at coal mines in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. These machines are not very popular over in the US

    PAmining Considering the company could get CAT equipment and parts could be readily available. How many hours would these machines run before they replace them?

    That I don't know. I think she shut down because she was either problematic, expensive to maintain or hard to get parts for....or for all three.

    Because it's fucked. It's worn out, you know as well as I do that it's to much for so little. It served it purpose I'm sure but It will be cut up and recycled then reborn into something new.

    It is a French POS, the LeCar of excavators. Even when parts were available, they were ridiculously high in cost and were only produced after they were ordered. Not much of a dealer support network at all.
