    Great tips on layering and reducing the number of keys needed, thank you Cory. Still learning, but already now I can see (and hear) that SD3 is my desert island drum VST :)

    Much appreciated Cory its definitely time for me to upgrade. Your explanation of the simple stock features makes it agree with my high hopes for the new product, so thank you for making this video it is a great pitch. However, I do have one question regarding stacking the toms as it seems so much more efficient now so can you tell me, do you flip the phase when you layer them?

    Nah, don't really need to. The rimshots are more like transient slaps that give the toms a bit of an extra boost.

    How are the old SD2 expansions in SD3? Is it the same high quality because of better features in SD3 such as articulations or is it basically the same as SD2?

  • @CoryPelizzari

    Same sounds as usual but with all the features of SD3 like adding more pieces, stacking, surgical velocity detail and a better tuning engine.

  • @robertstapleton3598
    @robertstapleton35984 жыл бұрын

    Cory would you please describe more slowly how you get stacked velocities. Right from the start your window shows velocity curves off to the side which I have been unable to duplicate. Mine are all in a vertical row and won't move horizontally. And yours has Level and Tuning beneath that which I'm not seeing in my Velocity Gate. When I add a rim shot stack of the same drum that's playing the center hit, I have two icons pop up - one for the center and one for the rim. No problem. Then if I add an off-center to the stack it gives me the off-center plus ANOTHER copy of the center hit. So now I have four icons. I'm sure I must be doing something wrong but I can't follow the video well enough to see what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!

    Click on the kit piece you want to modify and you'll see the little stacked boxes towards the top right - click on one of those boxes to see the menus for that stack to the right, then click on "Velocity Gate" and use the slider to choose which range you'd like to activate the stack in.

    If I set off center hits, center snare hits, and rim shots, do I have to understand what you mean "then I have the edge hits on the next key" ? Can you explain "edge hits on the next key"? Are edge hits a hybrid between rim shots and one of the other?

  • @CoryPelizzari

    @CoryPelizzari

    6 жыл бұрын

    There are four main snare articulations in SD3 - Centre, Off Centre, Edge and Rimshot. I layer the Off Centre, Centre and Rimshots to one key, then the Edge hits to the key next to it so I can play variations between the two keys. Then there are Cross-Sticks on the rim which I also keep separate. The edge hits are simply the stick hitting further away from the centre of the snare than off centre hits.

    I will not be playing sd3 with keys when I do it. So I basically just set the three snare icons and get less variation than you? Yeah, just appeared there are only three snare icons for settings not four.

  • @CoryPelizzari

    @CoryPelizzari

    The snare icons you see are stacked articulations - you can add as many as you want, and you can even set the snare edge hits to another velocity if you desire, and if you're using an electric drum kit you can auto map all the articulations to the correct position on the drum pad. It's completely customiseable, which can in turn overwhelm some users. That's why I always use Realidrums as a substitute for easier navigation.

    @@CoryPelizzari Ahhh thanks! This helps since I had the same question. I thought those were stacked drums and it didn't make sense at first when you said you could just switch out drums and not have to repeat the process. So now I understand that those are stacked articulations, not duplicates of the drum itself. But I didn't see how to stack the articulations. Did I just miss that? Thanks for a wonderful video!

    Hi, I know this has been posted three years ago now and chances are you won't read this. But I have to ask... I own several drums plugins, including SD3. Something I try to recreate but just can't is the sound of some DW snares with a very distinctive resonance. The original DFH Superior had a beautiful one (DW 14'' Brass) that has never been resampled since. Ad for the life of me, I can't find any snare that matches this one. I don't know why Toontrack is sobbing DW snares. They have tons of black beauty's and a maximum of 3 DW's that I know of among hundreds of snares. Even the "kicks and snares" latest EZX doesn't have any and boy do they have snares that sound just the same (for whatever reason, they almost all seem to be hit with hands instead of stick. No attack or resonance whatsoever). That said, your videos were enlightening. I watched all your videos and was surprised to find something similar coming from an unexpected library that you patched and refurbished: Abbey road (Kontact). Your version of the Abbey road "Late 60's kit" is stellar and kind of mimic that snare I was looking for (it's very close to those DW snares I listened to IRL). Not only does it replicate that resonance, it also has that saturation feel that I love. It's brilliant. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m5eG1sGynLfJebQ.html Now, as the expert that you obviously are, do you know any drumkit, preset or snare in SD3 (from any expansion) that would more or less match this snare sound (without the distortion obviously but with that kind of resonance) ? I know that compression is usually the way to go but if that resonance isn't there to begin with, it's not even worth trying. Not sure you will read this and if you do, not sure you'll be interested in answering it but I hope you do. Take care.

    I like snares with that thick resonance sound as well. As far as SDXs go you'll only really find that sound in either the Metal Foundry or something similar in my custom preset for Progressive Foundry which you can download here: www.dropbox.com/s/set2wk39agsjtjx/SD3%20PF%20Ludwig%20Stainless%20Steel.sd3p?dl=0 It doesn't sound exactly the same because it's a steel snare and doesn't have the warmer wood tone of the one you heard in my video, but it's one I like and use often. You can hear an example here: www.dropbox.com/s/rputp3zealxj3bm/PF%20Example.wav?dl=0

    But why are most drummers going for superior? It just doesn't make any sense. You mighr love slate but superior leads the way and the stats says it from every angle despite you thinking it's more playable as a drummer. Hearing is what sells music not what producer prefer to use etc. Addictive drums is even better than slate been tears anyone mention slate anywhere on here.

    @@spacepodstudio I hate Slate drums for many reason, not the least of which is the lacking library of available drums. They also sound too polished (and I'm not the only one who thinks this). There is simply not the same level of hi-hat control, trigger controls, and sheer amount of drums to choose from in Slate drums. Custom midi-mapping is a hot mess in slate drums as well. And the reality is, you make Superior Drummer sound however you want it to sound... Slate Drums are pre-processed, and are much closer in comparison to EZdrummer than Superior Drummer. The biggest kicker for me is that it lacks a standalone program, meaning I now have to rely on TWO pieces of software when playing live, adding to the chances of one crashing. Superior simply loads up on its own standalone program, where SSD requires running through a DAW - which is slow and cumbersome. As someone who owns the Steven Slate 5 library AND Superior Drummer 3, I can say that I'd never substitute Slate for Superior and more than I'd substitute EZDrummer. There is a reason Slate drum is $150 (same as EZDrummer and Addictive Drums) - the program is limited in what it can do, and limited by lower quality, pre-processed samples.

    SSD5: 150 reg price Superior Drummer3: 399 reg price ....there’s a reason why one costs way more than the other. Otherwise, Superior wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is.
