Just happened to catch this today on the 54th anniversary of my entry into RTC Great Lakes, December 2, 1969, Company 698, Gary L. Pitts, BM1, Company Commander. Reflecting back, a great experience. I thank Mister Pitts for his guidance and leadership.

Went to cook "A" school in '71 in the new building 94. Us boys would go to the EM club after dark and have a few beers. On the way back we would pass by the Wave barracks and toss a few pebbles at the upper windows only to be chased off by an old Chief Wave. Lots of fun.

I enlisted in 1984 as an STS and attended basic at RTC San Diego and was in a drill company as Crack Rifle RCPO. Found out at sub school that I was claustrophobic and was reclassified as an STG. All sonar schools were at FLEASWTRACENPAC San Diego, except BEEP which was at NTC San Diego. Hit the fleet as an STG3. Mayport, FL.

Wore those white leggings in 1990 but we didn't use the rifles. They were in a big rack up on the wall, but they never got them out. I guess they had moved away from them by then. My old division building is gone now and is an empty field at GL.

My dad was a navy "amphib" in ww2, veteran of both the liberation of the Philippines and the battle of Okinawa. In 1946 he was a "china sailor" rescuing war orphans and Christian missionaries from communist killers!
