It does a great job heating my 1200 square foot doublewide trailer in Cleveland Ohio so it will probably do quite well for your cabin.

Looks like a great stove. Can you add a water coil to it easily? The heat volume suggests to me you could run hydronic heat as well and store it.

Thanks for watching. The larger Gamera from Bulgaria can be ordered with stainless steel water coils built in. The Liberator I would say is a little small for a hydronic system at 20-33k btu per hour.

Cool stove. I've always had traditional wood stoves up in North Idaho. Pellet stoves that I've seen i've stayed away from, because without power they can't turn the auger to move them to the fire. Not so with this stove, plus you can burn regular cord wood, but it doesn't look like you can do an all night burn with cord wood, because the infeed is so small. The ash buildup seems like a problem to, is it a problem to clean it out while its burning?

The thermal mass bench stores heat and slowly releases it overnight to keep you warm without having to stoke the fire or damp it down which would make it burn dirty and inefficiently. The ash buildup is not really an issue. I can fire it all day without the ash getting in the way and It only takes me a minute or two to clean out each morning before I fire it back up. Like the way you used the barrels! When you put barrels to gether. How did you connect the barrels

The barrels are connected to each other with a 4" scrap of barrel metal screwed inside then filled with cob around the stovepipe.

Hi, thanks for the video, I'm wondering are you going out of the stove through the barrels, is there a stove pipe running through the barrels then outside through the upright chimney pipe? I'm off grid in Northern Maine, small 500 sq foot cabin, thinking seriously about this stove, my propane non vented wall furnace is lousy, need to either get vented furnace or switch to a stove like this... thank you.

Thank you for watching. There is a 6" stove pipe running through the barrels which are filled with cob that stores and slowly releases the heat from the exhaust before going outside through the upright chimney pipe. With the rocket heater it does a great job heating my 1200 square foot trailer home in Cleveland using very little wood.

Excellent reporting! Why 2 air intakes? Only one used? Do pellets ever get to burn as clean as wood? (Because, during our outdoor pre-burn, pellets emitted nasty ochre smoke, even as barrel top reached about 400*F)?

Thank you for watching. The intakes are on both sides so you can choose which one to hook the outside air intake hose to based on convenience. I am guessing your outdoor preburn did not include a 20 foot tall insulated chimney, which would have given the pellets the stronger draft and hotter burn they need. They will burn better once your heater is installed as long as the pellets are dry. I prefer burning wood and I think it is a cleaner burn but the pellets are quite convenient.

@@UncleMud Ohhh! Maybe that’s it. For the burn-in, we stuck on a single-wall 5’ straight piece + an elbow at base. Outdoor temp was warm & rain intermittent. I burned wood til I could not sense smell from paint, then switched to pellets to try. So…unit not hot enough, chimney too short, could cause bad pellet smoke…I sure hope so! Need this to work!!

Where did you get the glass at the clean out?

The landfill near me has free wood chips, just load it yourself. Have you tried wood chips and would it clog the feed tube 🤔. Also have you heated water and your house with this at the same time.

We have not found any wood chip feed system that doesn't require a LOT of babysitting. The liberator only produces about 30k btu per hour so you don't get much of either if you try for both hot water and warm room.

Will this heat a small home of about 1100 sq. ft. effectively without a mass heat addition?

It will work a lot better with a thermal mass. This poorly insulated 1100 square foot double wide with a 600 square foot glass room would stay warmer with a much bigger thermal mass, but even with this very small mass bench down to about 15 degrees F outside we wake up 10 hours after we stopped feeding the fire and the house is still around 58 degrees. You could heat a home this size well with the Liberator without a mass bench if you strictly use the pellet feeder. A load of pellets lasts me between 8 and 20 hours depending on how much draft I give it. A load of scrap wood lasts maybe half an hour so the fire needs constant tending, which means unless your house is very very well insulated you would wake up cold without the mass. Some of these type of heaters I have built in treehouses and cottages and school busses without the mass and they work well for qhick cheap heat while your are feeding them and everyone just sleeps in a sleeping bag and reluctantly moves quick to feed the fire in the morning. The payoff for me for the hassle of constant tending has been reducing my fuel bill from over $3000 on propane to about $1500 per year on cordwood to now with this type of heater (of which I have built and used several long term) I am using less than $100 per year of hardwood flooring scraps from the mill down the street. Rocket heater beach .what is in the barrel. I am making some😅! Do you put small holes in the barrel and than put small stones inside the barrel!🎃

I am not sure I understand the question. Please keep trying with me until I get it right. The barrel is empty except for an insulated internal chimney. The barrel radiates heat into the room quickly. The flat barrel bench next to the heater is filled with solid clay with the chimney going through it to store heat and radiate it slowly after the fire goes out. Thank you for watching.

When do you clean the ash out of stove???

Every morning I pull a dustpan of ash from the cold rocket heater and sprinkle it on the ice on the driveway.

Great update. Question: It has to do with the ceramic inside. You've only had it for less than a year and it needs replacing? Or am I missing something?

This was an early prototype of the Gen 2. The ceramic liner boards have since been replaced with something a lot more durable.

@@UncleMud Thanks. I was a bit concerned. I've heard there's a waiting list and they won't be out for a few more months. I hope they do well and sell. I did check with my insurance company about the stove. My homeowners will go up 50 a year because it'll be an added source. If I could put it in my fireplace then I'm fine. I'd like to add two. One for where I live and one for my vacation home. Looks like that would heat the house upstate just about right from what I've been seeing

if it is below freezing there is enough natural draft for it to start right up. Above freezing I open the cleanout under the chimney and light a firestarter in there to prime the chimney. thank you for watching.

@@DebCM-wm8kj If you have an existing furnace you can get rough idea of your daily heat needs on any given hour by multiplying the BTU rating of the furnace (say 30,000 BTU) x the fraction of each hour that the furnace is running (say .2 hours if it is on for 12 minutes each hour). You would want to do this test when it is about as cold as it gets, then you would multiply by 3 or 4 to give yourself leeway to only be feeding the rocket heater for eight or six hours each day and getting your warmth from the mass bench instead of feeding your heater 24/7.

@@UncleMud Hi, thanks again!! I knew you would have a good way of figuring it out. But we don't have a furnace, just a wood stove and some passive solar heat thru some south facing windows. Our hose is about 1,100sf. and shaped like an eL. Thanks you!

Can you burn coal in it?

It is possible but not recommended. The metal is not designed to handle the higher temperatures of burning coal.
