Liberal Heat Pump

I went on CBC’s ‘This Hour has 22 Minutes’ and all I got was a Liberal heat pump 😉

I have one as a backup for the wood stove overnight or when out. Live in Nova Scotia. Cheaper than the baseboards we kept at 60F. So for our purpose well worth the cost. Ours is suppose to work to minus 28 C. Starts slowing down at minus 10 C. By minus 28 you need to hold your hand right up to it to feel a slight warmth. About the same as if you cooked in your oven and it was shut off for about an hour. Barely there. Hardly going to heat a home. When we had 3 weeks of minus 30C were my husband stayed up late with the wood stove and was up at 5 am again to get it going. I left him home when shopping to man the stove. Did not want pipes to freeze.

I don't know what is funnier, the joke or that you didn't get the joke. The joke is that it doesn't matter what the liberals do the conservatives are so closed minded that they believe no matter what nothing will work unless it is born from themselves. Hint, conservatives don't see the bigger picture, don't compromise and only care about themselves and the upper class

As for the heat pump, perhaps it should be hung in the Liberal caucus meeting room. Plenty of hot air in there. Oh, wait - it's supposed to put warm air IN, not consume electric power to move it out. Too bad.

A few words of to the warning! I was in the Plumbing and Heating trades for 41 years, so I do know a thing or two about this. I live in a country that is perfect for the heat-pump, and have had one for 5 years now, but would never give up my pellet stove, when the real cold, "below 0°C" kicks in. In Canada, it is even more serious that you have dependable, secondary source of heat. For instance, Natural gas furnace or boiler, and a woodstove as a backup in case things get hairy. Below freezing is definitely not an effective temperature range for a heat pump. But for cooler temperatures, I’d say around 10°C to 18°C is what I would call the sweet spot for a heat pump. In this range heat pumps are very "efficient" and "effective". They are still "effective" in the single digits, even down into the minus single digit temperatures, although not very "efficient", Basically once the temperature outside drops below 0°C , you will most definitely notice a significant drop in the heating ability of a heat pump. Oh yeah, and they can sometimes freeze up in minus temperatures. Hope this helps.🍁

Half true. From my mechanical engineering training, the efficiency is poor in cold temperatures (very high efficiency when temp difference is low). The working principle is practically the same as a refrigerator, they will absolutely work in freezing temperatures. The working fluid (refrigerant) has an extremely low vapourization temperature-how thermal energy is transferred from outside ambient temperature. I think they're most practical in situations with excess/cheap/clean electricity, and moderately cold temperatures, ie BC would make the most sense in Canada. I could potentially see them being used to ease grid stability, if programmed to take excess power generated.

Sadly ... no ... equalization is written into the Constitution Act of 1982. So the province cannot just "shut off the taps" we would first have to challenge and start a constitutional change. Not sure if any one government will be in power long enough to make that happen. But we can take baby steps; get sovereignty back, get jurisdiction over our natural resources, get control of collecting our own taxes, get control over our own fiduciary responsibilities, get our own police force. Then challenge the constitution act and become the mature province we are. Fun fact, we have a larger population in Alberta now then when Ontario did when they decided they required the OPP.

It’s sad that some Canadians still think ‘have provinces’ cut a cheque and send to to Ottawa for their ‘transfer payment.’ That’s not how it works. The ‘taps’ (assuming you mean oil valves on pipelines) belong to private companies who are contracted to move their customers’ product. They can’t just turn off the taps, as tempting as it might be. You have a choice to know what you are talking about before commenting. Try that.

@@garywagner2466 it is obvious by their context the are using a metaphor, "taps" in this case is the flow of money not oil. An understandable mistake, but what I find appalling is that you would rather be insulting with your comment, rather than just making an argument to add to the discussion. It is counter productive, you won't change people's minds by trying to denigrate them. Just for fun, let's look at your argument. The oil is "owned by private companies" you are only partially correct. They pay royalties to the province (who originally owns the oi) and the pay leases to run pipelines across land, owned by either other private companies or the province. So there are plenty of stages in the supply chain where the province could in fact "shut off the taps", heck the province could go full socialist tyrant and just make the transport of oil illegal, the companies would pull out and stop doing business in Alberta and effectively "shut off the taps". Now lucky for us we don't have a government in power that leans that way, so it will not happen. As for you understanding of the transfer payments, you are wrong, that is exactly how the calculation is done, the provinces add up revenue numbers and the "have" provinces pay a portion to Ottawa to be distributed. Ironically it would be easier for Alberta to shut off the oil taps then the money taps. Sorry for the long read, I can't seem to be brief in these discussions.

You see how easy it is for Justin to spend our money. The heat pumps are over $10,000.00 each which wouldn't include the new electrical service you'll need or the feed to the road and if everyone gets one you'll have to upgrade the wire along the roads. So there's 30,000 people in the Maritimes who would be eligible for a new heat pump because they're on oil. 30,000 time 10,000 is 3 Billion tax dollars and that's just the Maritimes. If you really want to help the environment sell natural gas to China and Europe. You'll get an immediate 50% reduction in GHGs.

This is beyond gold! As a user of a heat pump as a primary heating source I can fondly attest that even the most expensive brand is useless below -25. My current marginal electrical rate is 43¢ a kwh. It costs as much to heat my 325 sqft as an entire 3 story house cost me 3 years ago. Thanks Trudeau! 😁
