Liam Clancy - Shoals Of Herring

Музыка

With our nets and gear we're faring
On the wild and wasteful ocean.
It's out there on the deep we harvest and keep our bread
As we hunted for the shoals of herring
1 4 1
It was on a fair and a pleasant day
5
Out of Yarmouth harbor I was faring
1 4 1
As a cabin boy on a sailing lugger
4 5 1
For to hunt the bonny shoals of herring
O the work was hard and the hours were long
And the treatment, sure it took some bearing
And I used to sleep standing on my feet
And I'd dream about the shoals of herring
O we left the homegrounds in the month of June
And to Canny Shiels we soon were bearing
With a hundred cran of silver darlings
That we'd taken from the shoals of herring
You're net rope man now, boy you're on the move
You can swear and show a manly bearing
Take your turn on watch with the other fellows
While following the shoals of herring
Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman
And you're learning all about sea faring
That's your education scraps of navigation
As you hunt the bonnie shoals of herring
In the stormy seas and the living gales
I earned the gear that I was wearing
Sailed ten thousand miles caught ten million fishes
As we hunted for the shoals of herring
(Last verse sung with mininimal accompaniment)
1 5 1
And it's night and day we're faring
4 5
Come winter wave or winter gale
1 4 1 4 1 6m
Sweating or cold growing up growing old or dying
1 4 5 1
As we hunt the bonnie shoals of herring

Many years ago in Canada I used to dabble in folk music in a little band. One night at the University of Manitoba I sang a song, The Wild Rover, with Liam Clancy, my idol. Wonderful singer, guitarist and human being. The highlight of my life so far,

this is what I feel is missing in so many pubs here in the US, no background to the songs, no tales to entice the audience into being interested in the songs. Tommy and he were masters at it and I aim to replicate it soon.

If you are a performer , please do talk to the audience .It makes things so much more interesting .It does amaze me that so many singers ( even great ones) put so little effort into connecting to the paying customers .Give some background into your songs or do the research and give the history on the songs you are covering .

many years. What a hard life these men had. I remember the fishermen's wife's who would sell the herring round the doors where we lived. They carried a huge basket of fish hung from a leather strap round the forehead and a wooden board at the front where they would gut the fish.
