You don't fancy monetising your channel? Free cash you deserve it, I've watched you since day 1 keep it up mate
Really enjoyed this one B, especially the more in depth commentary, cos I like that sort of thing. Always knew you had it in abundance. It wouldn't work full vid but nice in occasional bursts in between ya ramblings. I'm sure most non pro drivers would be surprised how far ahead you plan and anticipate. Loved it today. Cheers.
Great video, Barry,.. love the sensible Eco driving explanations mate, shame other drivers don't follow your lead.. Keep up the Great Vids. And get yourself monetised on KZread you deserve it for great content mate 👍.
New Sub, not a truck driver but do spend 80% of my working week driving around the UK & Europe as a servic engineer. I watch with interest as its good to see how you manage the road from your point of view. Obviously its a completely different prospective. Watching & learning how a HGV works makes me a better driver. cheers.

Thanks for the sub!
Brilliant explanation Barry on how it should be done. In my experience Tipper drivers wouldn't understand any of this . Foot down / lane 2 ( or 3 if they can get away with it ) 2 inch from the car in front. 🤣
Great explanations on braking bud keep up with your vids ur doing a grand job, Will
Briliant video. Mirrors. Great to hear your thought process. Mirrors.
Really good, most interesting.
I thought that was you. I recognized the face and my car is in this video hahaha. Also blinking nightmare that junction where cars just pull out.
Brilliant video, you would be a cracking hgv driving instructor

your narrating everything going on certainly gives me something to think about. am about to do the practical parts of the c/e licence. unfortunatly am a late in life trucker on one of those apprentice things, (though I do proimise am one of the ones taking it seriosuly not just a career change for giggles)
FYI Barry, An exhaust brake causes engine braking by raising pressure, whereas a Jake brake causes engine braking by decreasing pressure. A Jake brake connects to the valve train, whereas an exhaust brake connects to the exhaust system. A Jake brake has far higher braking power than an exhaust brake.

Good video this 👍 i feel like im sitting with my instructor again. Ive recently passed my c+e. Yet to land my first job
In my experience most of UK trucks are fitted just with engine brake. I have Volvo with engine brake and also retarder on gearbox and retarder on rear axle on trailer. This set up save brakes very well and i operate it with leaver under steering wheel on right site below leaver for wiper blades. There is option for auto use but manual use is more economical using without brakes

I think a lot of Scania’s have an automatic engine brake on the pedal.
@thomtrucker1925

@@johnb8956 they are fitted as other brands as Volvo, Daf, Mercedes. The strongest always wason Volvo with timing exhaust valves. Like 2 gears down. But that isn't retarder, retarders are hydro or electric and can be on gearbox or axles. We use them in Scandinavia very often, no chance to drive downhill for 40 minutes brakes will be on fire
Sporrodactisis and dingles and popsy pings - love it lol keep the wheels rollin' bud take care as you always do! A jake brake turns the engine into a compressor by making the timing and valves do such a thing. It improves fuel economy by in part cleaner and hotter burning of the diesel in the chambers that get extra hot caused by the engine being made into a compressor. So it is not technically an exhaust brake which is a butterfly that constricts the exhaust causing a hissing noise. That's what I heard anyways! :)

My route to work every morning down the east lancs from windle island and left into Ashton 🙂 x
Unlike European trucks I don’t think US trucks have their engine brakes integrated with the ABS system. I know on Scania and Volvo if the engine brake causes the rear wheel to lock up on icy roads, the ABS will knock out the engine brake. Another great video Barry nice to see you driving through the roots of your origins.

The North American trucks have their engine retarders linked to the cruise control and braking system. If it detect wheel spin it will disengage the cruise and if it detects locked wheel it will disengage engine brake until all drive wheels are turning.

@terryrance2662 thanks for the clarification.
What you need is advance warning of traffic lights about to change like we have here in Western Australia. Around 100 metres before the traffic lights is another amber light. If it hasn't started flashing by the time you pass it, then you know that the main set of traffic lights will remain on green as you drive through.

Hi mate live the craic At 6.27 … would you have made that turn from near side lane you were in ? Or would you have had to swing out a tad ??
Good commentary drive, driver. Like the explanation in when the retarder is used, I suppose once you know your wagon you can tell how much retardation is needed and at what distance?
just asking Barry do you get a little bonus every week for Eco Driving or im i thinking of a different company that do it, and love the videos bro keep it up and super super educational and even helpful for new car drivers on what to look for etc and to always look ahead and see what is going to happen

I drive for wren kitchens and we have a drive score on our driving everyday, which scores us for eco driving, hard braking, harsh steering and the like. We have to score an average of 8.5 out of 10 each week and it does affect your bonus. That said makes you drive more diligently and safe.

@@derektomlinson2521 well also I think it’s a good incentive for drivers to not drive like a 17 year old dude after getting his license. Cause you see truck drivers and they just drive like lunatics and it’s just crazy to be honest
Can you make video how you approach big roundabout please!!! Boomtown!!!
Do you have radar-guided cruise control or is it just the bog standard sort?
ahh I wish we had jake breaks here.. they make a far more absurd sound. that is also the reason we dont.. exhaust break just does a similar thing in a different much quieter way :(.. and I believe they should know what a retarder is as they also have them now, then again they still cling to drum breaks over discs so maybe not.
Hi mate I'm not a truck driver but I love trucks only driven them on building sites when our drivers let me have a go might sound a daft question but how do you apply the retarder is it on a button, I fancy driving artic I'm from farming background so used to trailers but I'm 53 and I don't fancy nights out 😂 do like your videos mate

It's a column stick on the right hand side of the steering wheel. You just click it up and down depending on how much of it you want to put on. Same column also operates the trucks gear box and allows you to select manual or automatic gear shifting,.
Okay let’s just get one think straight….. Trucks have brakes to make them stop. Drivers have breaks.
Fanny tastic bazza😂😂
At least a scanny doesn't patronisingly remind you that using the retarder saves brake linings like the good 'ol d-d-d-dafs! :) Six green daf ticks for you and it'll be back to 69% ( I have been driving dafs too much recently lol)
