Thank you sir. Your explanations made the task quite easy. For those who may have difficulties to find the custom screws that hold the spider to the basket (as I experienced...) the part number is 4000FR4031B. Got mine specially ordered at a local appliances store that diligently did an awesome job at finding the part. Also, if the basket grinded the thub edge as the spider failed. It is quite easy to repair using a hot air plastic welder with polypropylene rods. Make sure that the surface to weld is clean from debris. Tip : I used electrician's tape to keep the edge from spliting while patching the hole. Make sure to cut/sand off any welding bulges that may appear and that the edge keeps its original smooth profile.

Steve, Great video! I recommend you buy a 1/4" and 3/8" hex adapter for your battery driver. With your 10mm socket and your 17mm socket it speeds things up. I run the bolts screws down so they start clutching. I then thghten the rest by hand, so as not to over or under tighten these screws. You really Saved me with your bellows new install! It took me over 2 hours, on the first time! I did not understand the way this bellows mounted on the tub. Once I got this it went straight ahead. Thank you So Much! LG appliances are my favorite! Helpful video! One likely scenario that he doesn't cover is when the spindle is frozen/rusted in there and won't come free. If the spider arm is rusted/disintegrated like mine was, chances are it also has seized/rusted to the inner bearing. There is too much bounce when the drum is suspended on those spring to get a good whack on the spindle to set it free. I ended up taking the drum assembly out and setting it on the floor. Soak the spindle with PB Blaster or other lubricant, let it soak in, then give the spindle a good whack. Knowing the problem I had, I wasn't too worried about marring the spindle with direct hammering since it was part of the part being replaced. Once it breaks free, it should slide out. If not, use a block of wood or pipe to tap it all the way free (at this point you won't need a lot of force and, as the video said, you don't want to hit directly on the bearings as you could damage them. This was the only part of the job that was difficult.

Replacing the bearings and spider fixed my wobbly drum and leaking in the rear. I think the spider shaft is commonly corroded and scored so just replacing bearings won’t fix it for long. The shaft has to be smooth for the new seals to work.

Lower cost, lower weight, resulting in a shorter overall unit lifespan before maintenance is required. People can go on all day long about planned obsolescence, and how companies just want you to keep buying stuff over and over, but at the end of the day, if a company makes a cheaper washer that technically still washes clothes just fine, people will buy it. Companies don't have any incentive to make higher quality products because everyone will just buy the cheaper ones instead, and the better ones won't end up being worth the manufacturing cost.

This would be a great video if he didn't say how easy it was. It's not easy and you need to replace the rear tub assembly to make it a easier job. Every one I have done the rear bearing was noisy before I started. You should always replace the rear bearing and seal when doing this job. This job is such a PITA that you should always replace the rear tub assembly when doing this job. If your shocks are showing signs of leaking replace the while you are in there. If your drain pump is original then replace that too since the drain pumps are cheap. Since you have it that far apart replace the tub boot also. You do all that you will have basically a brand new operating machine and you want have to take the front off the machine for another 8 to 10 years if you stop using so much detergent and only 2 teaspoons per load and stop using the pods. If you can do a wash cycle without any clothes in your washer and you see suds appear in your washer...... You have been using too much detergent. Use the tub clean cycle with affresh tablets every few months also. Take care of your machine and it will take care of you.

  • @ldl0021

@@1guitar12 I got it done, I had to buy the entire rear assembly off of eBay. The rear assembly is the part he leaves in the washing machine when he takes the front off and the metal drum out. My rear assembly and metal drum were fused together and couldn’t be separated probably due to rust and corrosion. So I ended up buying a new spider assembly, a new rear drum and the metal drum. This entire project was a pain in the a** and I hope to never have to do it again.

OK so I just inherited a used LG from a neighbor, it works fine but I have noticed there is a lot of horizontal play in the tub vs a new one I checked out at Home Depot. What part is this? The machine spins fine but at low speed there is a bit of a knock knock sounds - some type of damper I suspect. It is super quiet at max revolutions so bearing is fine.

Probably one or more of the shock absorbers needs replacement. Pretty simple and not expensive to DIY. There's a specialty tool that helps remove and replace the retaining ring for the outer boot. Get that tool.

Question: there is a small, metal rectangular 'tray' (~2"x4") on top of the drum assembly... it's seen at 3m50s... it looks full of hardened dirt residue? What is that? I saw this in mine and don't know what on Earth is. Any ideas? Thanks!

Great question, that is where the concrete for the front counter balance is poured into the mould during manufacturing of the part.

I think you should have mentioned that replacing the spider without replacing the bearings and seal is lunacy.

When trying to remove the bolts holding the spider to the drum, the bolts just spin and don’t come out. WTF?!?! And of course, can’t access the nut side.

The 6 bolts on the spider arms won't get loose. They just spin and spin. What is happening?! What can I do to get it off?

The bolts are “red” thread locked in. You need to use heat or brake cleaner to get them loose. Look for “remove red thread locker without heat” KZread video.

Do not use a screwdriver between the bracket and drum to separate them. You will damage the back wall of the drum. Most likely you are replacing the bracket because it is broken so it wont be as snug a fit as APP suggests.

You really should have also mentioned to check the outer tub assembly for damage, the reason I say this at least 6 out of 10 I find severe scarring to the outer tub due to customer using for prolong. With the busted spider arm, in fact just did one that literally had burnt a hole through the bottom side of the outer tub from the friction and the out of the line spin basket.

I am thinking of checking the spider on my LG washer/dryer combo which vibrates with a non matalic knocking when spinning, (when empty it spins perfectly quite & smooth) I was first thinking the 3 shocks underneath need replacing but they dont appear too bad. What would you say are the main symtoms if the spider bracket is failing ? The machine is only 4yrs old. Any help will be appreciated thankyou. Roger

I'm in the process of changing my bearings. They were so bad they flung grease everywhere. The machine eventually started smoking. A question I have is with the amount of filth in the tub and on the spider how does that not end up on the clothing? I assumed the water could pass back and forth between the basket and drum. Or is it drained as soon as it passes through the basket? I'm trying to clean it but it's almost impossible with all the gussets. I dug a pudding consistency type of filth from the gussets on the spider. Anyone know?

They can be a bit of a bugger to come off. The front edge is fit under a channel on either side, its a tight fit. If your machine is the same as in the video the process shown will work but saying that sometimes you have to give it a little help with a thin blades putty knife by pushing it down into the seam at the front of the top and pry a little to get the top to move. So as not to mark the top or adjoining console I usually run a strip of painters tape on both sides of the seam so I dont mark or scratch anything.
