LG E7 OLED TV Review vs B7

Ғылым және технология

We review the LG E7 4K OLED TV, including further analysis of the Technicolor Expert picture mode, HDR game settings, design elements, and sound quality vs the step-down B7.
The specific review unit we tested was the 65-inch LG OLED65E7V. There is a smaller 55in version called the E7N or OLED55E7N in the UK.

    Great video as usual Vincent. I've recently bought a 55 inch B7 and I'm truely blown away with the deep blacks and over all picture quality and the gaming is so immersive. I just have my TV on standard cinema mode or game mode when gaming, I'm not very tech savvy - but is there anything important I should be changing in picture settings to further enhance my experience? Thanks

    Your reviews and comparisons have been a huge help this year, Vincent. Thanks! I bought a 65C7V on the black Friday sale at 37% off. The B7 was going for the same price at the time so I figured why not get the nicer stand. Haven't bought a new tv in 8-10 years (been so long I can't recall) so it should be a nice bump in quality. Can't wait to play some Horizon on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on 4k blu-ray players? I'm leaning towards a Panasonic UB700 atm. :)

    Good Job Vincent, I think what set's LG apart from the other OLED competitors is the across the board picture quility of it's sets. I personally like the LG 65C7 from this years models, and as you said with the latest firmware update from LG the over all comparesion gap between the LG models and the Sony A1E has pretty much vanished. I'm hoping @ CES 2018 that Panasonic and Sharp will announce a return to the US market with OLED offerings to help furture push down prices and add a wider range of OLED options. Thanks again for all the work you do bringing us this great information.

    Hi Vincent this is Rajeev from Canada. Unfortunately i too was a victim of panel lottery. Purchased a C7 last week only return it to store as there was massive vertical banding noticeable in lighter scenes. Run the 5% grey test and there it was. The panel appeared to be divided into grey vertical segments from light to dark. Cuurently my C7 is on back order and hopefully i get lucky with the panel this time. But this is happening a lot with LG panels and personally i feel LG should be checking for quality of the panel before it leaves the factory.

    LG 2016 E6 65”. I’ve just tested the Mad Max clip on my 2016 E6 for comparison. Firmware 05.30.15, latest in my region at this date, 1st December ‘17. I have changed the settings of HDR Bright, HDR Standard and HDR Game so that they look identical for colour, brightness, etc. All I am trying to do is compare the HDR Tone Mapping. With HDR Bright and HDR Standard being the same I add Dynamic Contrast Low to HDR Bright. I now have 3 different versions of this scene. HDR Bright with DC Low, HDR Standard and HDR Game. HDR Bright with DC Low blows out the highlights, the most. HDR Standard also blows out the highlights, HDR Game is the most accurate. Even with Dynamic Contrast set to Medium, the HDR Game setting shows more of the highlights than HDR Standard with no DC. HDR Game with either DC Low or DC Medium are closest to the preferred setting on 2017 LG E7 in this video. The 2016 sets do not have the Active HDR triggered by setting DC to Low. My recommendation would be to use HDR Game setting with DC on Low or Medium for watching all content on the 2016 LG OLEDs, it has the best implementation of the HDR Tone Mapping with the current firmware.

    Airway5 Nothing new. The only relevance, if you have a 4khdr tv capable of displaying hdr10 meta data, this is what hdmi2.1 will give you. And 120hz gaming, which is useless if you game on your tv with a console. And HDMI 2.1 is going to be compatible with all 2.0 connections, you will only really need a new capable cable.

    The HDMI 2.1 specification was just recently released (www.hdmi.org/press/press_release.aspx?prid=152), but "the HDMI 2.1 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) will be published in stages during Q1-Q3 2018, and HDMI adopters will be notified when it is available." So there might be a chance that even the LG's oled tv's released in 2019 might not have HDMI2.1.

    Great review, Vincent! I really can not understand how come LG has not managed to improve at all near black uniformity of OLED panels, after so many years of their panels being on the market, and even being the only option for the other brands to bring to market OLED tvs. So much for perfect blacks. Such noticeable imperfections near the perfect blacks even in premium models is quite disappointing, and kind of defeats the purpose of offering perfect blacks when anything near it will look so bad. Still wondering if true professional reference monitors really have similar lack of uniformity. It seems completely unacceptable for pro-reference purposes. Certainly CRT reference monitors of yesteryears did not have such problem, did they?

    No note: The firmware update also corrected some glitches in LG's motion enhancement technology 'TruMotion'. For example in the 'taxi scene' of ep. 5 of Netflix' 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' my LG B7 used to exhibit a very serious warping effect going on in the logo on the cab's door (05:25); even at a dejudder setting of '4'. Now, after the update, you can max out on the dejudder without any adverse effects. Bravo, LG! As for the 'Technicolor Expert' mode, I'm pretty certain there's also a modified brigtness ramp, compared to the ISF Expert modes, that has noticeable effect on e.g. light shadow on actors' faces.

    Too bad that the Technicolor picture mode is not good, I was hoping that this could be competitive with Panasonic even before calibration. Active HDR in game mode would be very hard to do and can't be really done without too much brightness fluctuation which could be annoyance. You need variable refresh rate for this because not many games are solid 30 or 60 fps, even 1080 Ti can't keep stable framerate, so yes, dynamic tone mapping and variable refresh rate is definitely needed for this. Vincent do you suggest owners to check grey slides before the end of return period?

    j What you got was called image retention. It happens after watching static images for too long. The panel refresh will fix image retention but be careful. Cause if you get burn in you can pray to Gods and use panel refresh 100 times but it will never fix it. My advice is to not watch News for too long and don’t leave other programs that have static images.

    j It doesn’t matter if the tv was new, oled tv is very susceptible to image retention. You can get image retention just from scrolling though apps on the tv. Just be careful not to get burn in cause that is permanent and warranty doesn’t cover it.

  • @jacked200

    @jacked200

    John Smith you don't understand ...I took it out of the box and the first thing I did was run slides to see vertical banding..unless they left static images on from the factory then there's no other way..I know what image retention is..and it wasn't anything I did..

  • @Marco-em2in

    @Marco-em2in

    6 жыл бұрын

    j Ok I get you know it probably wasn’t image retention. It was probably that the TV was still very new and needed to warm up. Oled panels can sometimes come with screen artifacts from factory and with use of the TV they can disappear. But still be careful in leaving static images for too long because once you get burn in you can’t fix it. I got burn in on my Oled 2016 C6 tv and it sucks. And the warranty doesn’t cover it and I’m now stuck with a 2,000 dollar burn in tv. Anyway congrats on you’re Oled TV and please take care of it.

Even when playing titles from Netflix that are known to be in HDR . the thing is Dolby-vision is working fine and the logo comes on at the top right of the screen as it should . The weird thing is that even Netflix titles themselves don't read HDR in their notification area beneath the title . they only read "Ultra HD 4k" or "Dolby Vision" . so i'm wondering if there is something in the TV settings i should be changing , or is it like a regional thing . i live in North Africa. i do have the latest LG firmware 04.07.06 and latest Netflix update .

    I got the LG C7 at Best Buy last week. Should I get the warranty of 5 years for $389? People say after a couple years the C7 (or any OLED tv) gets picture burn in. So I’m afraid I’ll be screwed later on. I love this tv tho.

    vGREENARROWv Yes, Same Pictutre Quality. Only difference is E7P Model is screen on glass, All HDMI ports are on the side "Better for flat wall mounting" and Speakers. Otherwise all 7 Models have same chipset and Processor and give same quality picture. Ohh and maybe higher models may be a tad bit brighter, Not 100% sure on that :o/

    Vincent, I just got a C7 delivered today... and was saddened to see it has a dead green subpixel in the upper left area of the screen. Is this something I should return the TV over... or should I take a discount and keep it? This is the first time I've ever had a display with a defective pixel.

    Dear Vincent, I wish one day you compare Sony ZD9 with Sony A1/Oled(55"' or 65") and with regarding the prices of both that are almost the same, explain if you ever had to choose, which one would be your decision.

    Hi Vincent. So I bought b7 last Wednesday from Crampton and Moore Leeds for 1499.99 and Chris Bradley from Leeds store installed it for me on Sunday. I've been really happy with it so far but I don't know which pic mode to do the banding and vignetting tests. I posted as TECH_GUY on avforums a 5%, 10% and 20% Grey. Can you have a look and reply if that's a good panel if you are registered on avforums. I would appreciate it Vincent. Thanks. Oh one last thing. Tv say on box November manufactured.

    Ha! I had to laugh at this (sorry) I have been watching your reviews and decided to buy the b7 oled.... I am just wondering if you have done any videos about screen burn and/or dead pixels ? And how to get rid of it if it does occur... Thanks for your vids you really helped me in making my decision...

    I bought my B7 in August and apparently won the panel lottery as far as banding and posterization goes. My only issue, and it wasn't a deal breaker by any means, (the nice panel makes up for it) is that I have no pointer. LG could not help me with the issue and offered to replace the set. Due to the picture quality, I passed on the offer, however I was wondering if anyone knows something about it. I have re-registered the remote more times than I can count, so that's not it. When I try to go into "Pointer settings" from the menu, it's grayed out and not accessible. Any ideas?
