LG 2017 OLED Firmware: Youtube HDR, 360° Video, Dolby Vision Black *Fix*

Ғылым және технология

We explain the latest couple of firmware updates for LG's 2017 OLED TVs including the B7 & C7. Firmware update 04.70.30 in the UK & Europe rectified KZread HDR & added KZread 360° VR video playback.
Firmware update 04.70.65 (UK & EU) improves the elevated black level issue seen in Dolby Vision content, but some titles (especially through the Netflix app on the Apple TV 4K box) remain problematic.
From what we understand, the issue stems from the Dolby Vision "library" which will need further updates by the company.

Hi Vincent, I own a 2016 65 B6 OLED. Is there any chance LG will update the firmware to decode Dolby Atmos. I do not want to spend £3500 on a new TV and am frustrated they seem to have dropped the support for this model.

Thanks for your help Vincent. I referred to a lot of your content before I made my decision to buy an OLED C7P. I also found HDMI 2.1 cables on Amazon. I cant tell if theyre really 2.1 but i upgraded from HDMI 1.something and can see the difference. I am having some trouble configuring my graphics card though. It's a gtx 970 and from all the research I've done it says it does support 4k HDR 60hz, but everything seems dark. Sooo... What can I do to get you over to my house to calibrate it for me? 😁

the latest on my E7 is 4.70.36, not .35. btw, are there detailed release notes somwehere online for the firmware? i couln't find it. PS: could you talk about the "power save" (auto brightness) feature of the OLED LGs a bit in a future video? in a perfect world, when set to "auto" it should dim the TV as the ambient light gets dimmer sufficiently, so that i don't have to dim it even more manually to get the desired result. especially late at night. as implemented right now, it's comletely useless to me. if one watches TV (say at midnight), in a very dim room, the TV is still much too bright when set to "auto". i have to manually set it to maximum power save to get the desired result, and then back to minimum during the day. it shouldn't be like that. the TV should go to max automatically as the evening progresses, and then go back to minimum the next morning. best case would be if i could program it, so that it adjusts brightness acording to time of day, not necessarily just ambient brightness. example: from 6AM to 8PM its max brighness, then shifts to max powersave between 8PM and 12AM. could you pipe this request to LG? that would be amazing :)

Vincent, is it possible, that what you are seeing is caused by Netflix use of Dolby Vision ICtCp Delta E which has different luminance targets for a absolute EOTF. I assume your OLED is calibrated to YCbCr. I'm hoping you will do a video on the visual differences between the two color models.

Hi @Vincent_Teoh and thanks once again for your review of this firmware update on the 2017's LG Oled. I will ask you if you can help us, those people have the 2016's oled B6 have the big issue glow blacks levels in all pictures mode on the last firmware update (05.30.03 EU) This is really a totally shame and unfortunately LG didn't let us know nothing about a new firmware update will fix this issue. So I'm asking you a big favour if you can help B6's users and do a video talking about this big issue. If you can Vincent I'll be very thankful for your help. Cheers.

Hey Vincent, I’m still on the 3.60.09 on my E7... I avoided updating until now due to the tons of issues I got with the 4.70.06 on my old E7, I switched it with another one that’s still on the older FW exactly because of that. Do you think I should update to the latest to benefit from Atmos over HDMI since it’s not supported on my current FW?

I can confirm the same as Francis above on my C7 for Mass Effect Andromeda on Nvidia 980Ti on Windows 7 64 Bit (which did recognize and switch to Dolby Vision with earlier firmware - but was still faulty in many ways such as switching back to desktop etc.). HDR works fine on Andromeda and AC Origins (though its a bit washed out on both and requires a bit of adjustment). Moreover, in Canada at least, the latest firmware (OTA) is 4.70.36 still, and the supposed 4.70.70/65 hasn't been pushed out yet.

I have a B6, a friend updated it (literally connected it to the internet to watch netflix, while my apple tv was already on!) to 05.30.03, introducing the black glow (DV has always looked bad on my tv) I tried updating it to 05.30.60 to see if it helped, it didn't. Tried to downgrade, but the tv got smart and knew what I was trying to do and wouldn't let me downgrade to 04.31.20 because it was an 'earlier version'. My TV looks bad now, but I'd feel like an idiot buying another one. Perfect blacks are gone, seemingly for good.

Well LG released another update for the folks outside of the EU, Version 4.70.76, I did a quick install video kzread.info/dash/bejne/p5eYx8aIlajOmrw.html and as before it's just to show that everything went smooth, I added a quick demo of the LG Dolby Access app which I am hearing might not be on EU sets? It's a great demo app, so check it out if you haven't. For this update LG only noted a fix for an audio issue with volume going to zero but as prior they really don't list everything they did or changed. EU is still at .65, so again this is for the folks outside the region.

domino, yes on my C7 sometimes, while switching between titles on Netflix, the 5.1 channel audio gets messed up with the dialogue channel muted and other sounds still playing. The only way to fix it for me is to turn off and on the TV (as exiting Netflix and relaunching it doesn't help). My C7 (in Canada) is still on 4.70.36 though, and this issue only occurs once in a while and only after a few switches between episodes/titles or some fiddling around with the controls. BTW, I use Optical cable out from TV to my Yamaha Amp, so its not HDMI or anything.

Sikandar Khan , it is definitely not the components around the the tv you use. I had the same receiver and cables and had no issue with Netflix on my Samsung tv. So Netflix in combination with the 2017 oleds gives this problem. (My case the 65E7V). According to Netflix more customers have this problem. It seems that Netflix needs to address this problem with LG oleds of 2017.

Currently Dolby Vision is a mess and I think the 2018 high end TVs will have good enough tone mapping to make no visible differences unless you do side by side paused frame comparisons with HDR10. When we will have 12-bit couple of thousand nit bright panels then yes, Dolby Vision will look noticeable better but until then it's not a day and night difference on current high end TVs

  • @manualcontrol7518

    @manualcontrol7518

yup, without TV capable of displaying 12-bit color and really high nits, the ONLY advantage consumers are actually seeing from the "theoretically-superior" DV over HDR10 is scene-by-scene tonal mapping, and that's exactly what HDR10+ solvess, and it's open-source, and it's free. Dolby better hope display technology advance fast for its "theoretically-superior" format to shine or everyone will stay comfortably over at HDR10+ camp watching 10-bit 1000-nits displays.

After some more digging on the Australian LG support page for the TV, it appears that there is an upgrade available 04.70.36 but the auto-update function doesn't seem to recognise that an update is available. I sent off a support question to LG and will report back if there is an answer. The webpage for the upgrade is here is you wish to download it manually: www.lg.com/au/support/support-product/lg-OLED65C7T

I did get a response but a very poor one. The response said to just use Check for Updates - which doesn't work for this upgrade despite the detailed information I provided. So I thought to leave some feedback and entered some on their webpage for that purpose - and it didn't work - go figure ;-) Seems Aussie LG support is not great.

I just use HDR Standard, or Vivid. I play games with alot of Static Images (Star wars Battlefront II, Destiny 2, Gears 4, AC) and have no issues with Screen burn in, or Image retention. I have a C7 panel, if you do discover issues I recommend enabling LG plus channels, (and go to a Static black and white pixels flickering back and fourth) A blank channel. Let it go for a few minutes and see if that works

You could run a wired test such as plugging in a laptop and running a speed test as it could be your modem, second option is performing a full reset on the TV, third option is contacting LG about the issue, my TV loads even 4K movies from VUDU really quickly not to mention Netflix but my first guess is maybe an issue with the modem.

S D I don't have a problem with HDR, most games have built in calibration settings for HDR, they look fantastic. What game are you taking about? You can change the HDMI input settings to PC instead of Game, if you want a brighter picture, then select standard picture mode instead of game. Certain games don't look as good as they should in HDR due to poor optimisation from the developers. Take a game like Forza 7 as an example, that is masterd on an LG OLED by Turn 10, it looks gorgeous.

Pro Instincts everybody knows pc mode is broken with hdr. The colors are distorted and washed out. It’s unusable. The reds look orange. Some games look great in hdr game mode but some look horrible. FIFA 18 is so dim you can hardly even make out the players on the field. This is not a game issue. It’s an LG issue. On the a1e you don’t see this problem. On the lg, hdr game mode was perfectly fine until a firmware update intentionally ruined it. Very disappointing

S D Eh, Fifa looks fine. You sure you've selected the correct settings on the console? What are you using PS4 PRO or Xbox 1 X? What settings have you got on your TV? I use HDR Game, OLED Light 100, Contrast 100, Brightness 50, Sharpness 10, Colour 65, Tint 0, Colour Temperature 0, Colour Gamut Auto, Black Level low, everything off.

One thing I cant stand about these new tv's. 480p for one is unwatchable and so pixely. Not all DVDs got a blu ray transfer either. Especially older anime series. Watching the (walking dead) on them or other films like (The Shield), or (Rescue Me). The picture grain is over exaggerated and makes it ten times worse like dancing pixels. And it really distracts from the viewing experience when your looking at someones face and cant pay attention cuz all of the dancing grainy artifacts. Also this black level thing hype. I don't want my dark scenes so dark i cant see faces in dark scenes. They made it gray for a reason back in the day so you don't miss any night scene. Lol Wish someone would correct all this and actually beat the picture on my CRT.

I couldn't agree more! I see alot of dancing pixels though most of the Netflix shows I watch (UHD 4k, HDR, Dobly Vision) and it's so annoying! I just want a bright clear image! It's sad when my Samsung 8500 has a much clearer image than my Oled C7.

I was just looking at the Samsung 8000 and 8500 too. Its down to 800$ now for the 55. I'm still deciding between the two tho. Lol. It was the only tv that actually showed movie footage in the store like jessica jones and daredevil scenes. The grain is controlled very damn good as far as i could see. And i was standing directly infront of it. I'm just waiting to see if the Samsung Nu8000 is better or not. If it isn't then ill be purchasing one of the other two.

LG are one of the worst company’s for supporting older products, once you have brought it and there becomes new models out you’ll be lucky to get any kind of support from them unless it’s a major problem you have no hope of getting a fix, this time next year they’ll be a load of 2017 owners asking if there’s firmware updates to fix little problems, I have been a LG customer since 2009 and own many of their products and an old 2011 plasma that I use in the bedroom has slowly had apps removed over the years to the point that the only app worth having is BBC iPlayer, even You Tube was removed last year.

Vincent stop admiring LG Engineers so much. They are not doing any favours by releasing update for a TV they claim to be perfect out of the box. Consumers pay stop dollar for the product and these problems should have been addressed before the launch of the product. The Dolby Vision update was delayed by a year for the UP970. How about addressing more relevant issues like vertical banding and the limitations of the panel for getting brighter. So stop being a fanboy and a brand ambassador for LG and address more relevant issues that are prevalent and effect the consumer. As of now I have totally given up on LG as i have been let down by their pathetic customer service.

Regardless of all the updates released. The LG oled has serious issues that year after year don’t get rectified. The vertical banding, near black banding. Colour banding. Tinting vignetting. And inaccurate colour. And the uniformity on grey is hideous. And the blacks aren’t perfect. Its struggles to get out black without showing a mess on the screen.

cheaper prices with no QC is the new standard. why is it so easy to replace a bad OLED today?..because they have taken it into account that a few nitpickers will return panels with banding or tint. i wouldnt say the problems with banding are worse than any other tv tech but to keep these low prices they have obviously removed quality control. customers today are the ones that tests their tvs and replace the bad ones. Average Joe who watchs soaps daytime doesnt care about banding there LG have won 1 panel already that should have been removed at the factory. (if the QC was there) with the rollercoaster quality panels out to the customers they can keep these low prices. if you want LG to remove all bad panels at the factory expect at least twice as high prices at they have today. i won the lottery on my last 55" B7 the panel was near perfect with no banding or tint.
