Lexus RC 2019 a car really worth considering?

The Lexus RC coupe isn't the obvious executive choice if you're looking for a mid-sized executive coupe, but it's quite a beguiling one if you like your luxury. Here's the usefully revised version.
The improved Lexus RC is a premium two-door coupe that delivers smart design, Lexus luxury and craftsmanship, plus a refined and even quite engaging driving experience. The idea is to attract new and younger customers to the brand, though these people will need to like the idea of the 2.5-litre petrol electric hybrid engine that lies beneath the bonnet.
Background
Perhaps you're looking for an Executive Coupe selling in the £40,000 to £45,000 bracket. If so, your shortlist is likely to have a very Germanic feel to it, including cars like Audi's A5 and two-door coupe versions of the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 4 Series. Infiniti's Q60 coupe offers an alternative to these brands, but it's only sold through a very small dealer network. There is another alternative though - the car we're going to look at here, the improved Lexus RC.
Lexus first introduced this generation of RC coupe at the beginning of 2015 in fire-breathing 5.0-litre V8 RCF guise, then followed it up a year later with tamer hybrid and turbo petrol versions. Today, the mainstream range - for our market at least - concentrates of the RC 300h hybrid derivative. This revised model is sleeker, better equipped and, it's claimed, a little more fun to drive.
Driving Experience
You probably won't be expecting this Japanese contender to match its German rivals for handling involvement , but Lexus engineers have aimed to make this improved RC more fun to drive by focusing their attention on details, such as enhancing the car's aerodynamics and fine-tuning the suspension system and powertrain. Endowed with a flatter and more stable ride quality and sharper handling characteristics derived from the LC, the new RC is more athletic and responsive than before. As before, vehicle dynamics benefit from tuned electric power steering and an Adaptive Variable Suspension system that emphasises handling agility as well as ride comfort.
There aren't any engine changes to this revised model and it continues to be offered here primarily in 300h petrol electric hybrid form. If you want to settle back, there's nothing quite like the quiet, refined and sophisticated driving experience provided by the full hybrid powertrain and the E-CVT auto gearbox. As usual with a Lexus hybrid, you get the benefit of a fully electric EV driving mode for silent running over short distances. The engine is a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol unit aided by a powerful electric motor. Total output is 220hp, acceleration from nought to 62mph can be accomplished in 8.6 seconds, while the top speed is 118mph.

I bought a used prefacelift RC300h about a month ago. The infotainment needs some time getting used to, and the EV range is relatively small, but other than that the car is superb. No shakes or rattles, build quality is on another level. Seats are super comfy and it's a great cruiser. And it's extremelyyyy rare car where I'm from. Top notch car, I'm really enjoying it :)

Did you compare to the newer version? Do you have F-Sport version? Do you have CVT or ECVT gearbox? I would like to buy this year, coming from stiff, fun C30 2012 petrol R-Design.

@@WparuSlowach No I don't know how it compares to the new version. I saw the facelift model only once and spoke to the owner (he had Fsport, my is Executive). He said that the ride is a bit firm, but he loves the car. Fsport optics look really nice I have to admit. As for the gearbox i know it's a CVT but I don't know if it's a eCVT or CVT :).

@@darkolugomer5577 Visualy I like pre facelift more. Car is more cohesive. Great, thanks for info. Could you share with me yours maintenance cost? How it drives on normal basis? Did you get used to CVT gearbox? Could be even PM. Currently I have 30mpg avg in my Volvo, i pay 300 pounds tax, 750 pounds insurance and 200 pounds service per year. Many thanks! 🙏🏻
The thing about Lexus is reliability and comfort with a bit more flair than the average mainstream sedan. Performance german cars appeal to people with deep pockets and performance oriented minds. For the more practical people we have Lexus.
It’s not a belt-driven CVT gearbox. Toyota use a planetary gear set-up with very few moving parts and bulletproof reliability.

I've just commented the same as you, he made the same error in his other video. I know we all make mistakes but these reviews are watched by both engineers and those completely oblivious to how cars work, the facts need to be correct.

@andyburnett8012 In fact this is the third Lexus review of his that I've seen that he makes the same error. Comments like yours and the OP's appear under each one. He obviously either doesn't read the comments or just doesn't care to be accurate in his reviews.
To my eyes it’s better looking. As for reliability it’s a no brainer. Totally agree that it’s emphasis is on selling its major strengths. A great alternative!

Worth considering as long as you option the V6. Very nice poweplant.
I pick my blue RC next week. currently drive a IS300h, i love it! Lexus for Life. Next car will be a RCF V8.

How’s the size of it? Is it bigger than a 2015 IS350 f sport of around the same size? (Exterior wise)
I HATE the prefacelift with the separated head light. It looks so ugly! This facelift looks sooo good! Good work Lexus!

Lexus have come a very long way, though their cars have always been a good drive.

Great review! Very informative - the only issue I find with these hybrids is the ridiculous ev range , 1 2km claimed in this review , I have got 2.7km max from a corrolla hybrid 1.8 122bhp. I know its a petrol powered vehicle assisted by battery power - but the range could be extended considering the green credentials and marketing.
A shame we don’t get the V6 in the UK. Considering one of these to replace my Alfa Brera Prodrive as I’d like something equally different to the Germans but with a more relaxed cruising ability, just not sure if the 300h will have the poke that’s needed for overtaking and having some fun on twisty Scottish roads. The V6 350 sounds like it would be really make this model.

@@maxmorris4562 You have "quality warnings" on forums and portals about the C-Class. You have none of them with the Lexuses.
As "medium" coupé's go, it's easily one of the best lookers out there. And if you can accept that it cannot really compare to the Germans in outright performance, then it has to be high on your shopping list.

Will be fantastically reliable. Personally, I'd go for the IS300h; I don't feel the drivetrain suits this style of vehicle. I'd buy one over an Audi, BMW, or Mercedes every day of the week though. Great, thorough review, as always.

Lexus is reliable, bmw audi mercedies are a guarantee you need another vehicle while they are in the shop for weeks and verrrry expensive

Compromise, no reliable for 20 years, ever see an old BMW? Love my lexus 300, gave up my 1991 carrea 4 wheel drive 5 speed, just too hard to drive in traffic ( after years of enjoying) for this old , 70, nana ps sold this wonderful bad boy for muuuuch more than I purchased 15 years ago, love porches, discovered lexus is a wonderful alternative ( stereo systems far superior, snow systems much worst)
I loved the review, very classy and informative, but the music between segments is pretty dark. Why not something more optimistic ?

40:28 on what planet does Lexus not have equal or better residual values compared to German brands? everytime i look at used prices on Lexus cars, they are freakin' through the roof.

@@beeryweery would disagree, there are quite a few good English reviewers that give excellent reviews. There are unfortunately many that are in the pocket of the Volkswagen Audi Group and give biased reviews of their very ordinary products.
There's no saloon/4 door version of this, so why compare with the audi, merc, bmw?

As Patrick says this car does NOT have a belt driven cvt transmission, it has a power split device / planetary gear set. I have just watched your other shorter video about this car and you have again incorrectly stated the belt driven cvt. There's a big difference between a cvt transmission and an ecvt transmission. Your reviews should check these facts beforehand or at least amend the content.

I drove Audi before and it did not feel luxurious or expensive at all. The Audi A6 that I drove for two years felt cheap and poor build quality.

That dashboard comes from the is model which I have (is300h). its now 7 years old

Why is the top speed relevant?
I remember this car got absolutely shitcanned by Jeremy Clarkson, so it's probably pretty good.
Just the thing if you don't want diesel, or German. And who does? The Germans look like they were designed by committees, and the Teutons are playing engine catch-up

seventiesicon Especially the germans are blinded by german brands. It seems, no one here cares about reliability and overall quality. It's all about show and tell. Brand-cult-mentality like Applefanboys. There is a reason, why those brand value get trashed. If you want a Lexus, you have to pay a lot more.
Couldn't you test the 3.5 v6 model?? . 300h is a Water Pistol😆

Actually, apart from the hybrid version, you can only have the V8 petrol engine with 477 HP
