in reference to that Cal and Nate scene, I’m pretty sure it’s metaphorical and not actually meant to reveal something Cal did to his son. It’s more so to show Nate being traumatized by his dad’s videos and now he feels like any sexual experiences he has, he will always think of his dad (I think?) But that’s just my interpretation

That scene was a replica of the scene between Cal and Jules, so I'm sticking to Nate having had a Freudian dream and NOT A FLASHBACK until I am told otherwise with flashcards and PowerPoint because this show is already TOO FRIGGIN MUCH. The life he's had is well enough to eff him up without THAT. (LIke, what happened to the third brother in that family photo???)

The thing with Cassie that frustrates me is how she genuinely feels she’s done nothing wrong but the whole time it was a secret she was terrified of Maddie finding out. Like if you’re so “innocent” why do you feel so guilty? Someone who feels their actions are innocent wouldn’t be acting so paranoid of their actions being caught. IMO.

That's not what feeling innocent looks like. That is *exactly* what guilt looks like. Including trying every lousy argument in the book to people who know you and won't buy it. Her problem now is STUBBORNNESS, but unfortunately... that's exactly what sunk cost fallacy will do to you, it's like multilevel marketing scams; it tells you "I've gone this far and invested so much, I can't stop now!" But she CAN stop now . And she BETTER.

I found it so interesting how Sam Levinson was able to double down on the betrayal by showing how Maddy literally lived with them for a while, which we hadn’t known before. Like.. you already thought Cassie was a terrible person but the circumstances really show the meaning and importance of this friendship for Maddy, it’s heartbreaking. Cassie was one of the few people she could rely on and really trust. And she just went ahead and did the one thing that’s absolutely unforgivable. I mean yes of course, Nate was definitely taking advantage and preying on her, he is a predator after all, and consciously singled her out, seeing she was alone and vulnerable, getting her drunk right away as well. Cassie never would have had the self-esteem to take this step on her own, plus she’s scared of Maddy. Still, the fact that she is arrogant enough to have the audacity to think she’s special in a way that would lead Nate to treat her better than Maddy, just shows how genuinely stupid this girl is. Never mind the fact that she’s turning a blind eye to abuse/toxic behaviour and in a way even romanticises it.. but she says it in the episode. „AT LEAST I‘M LOVED.“ That is literally the only thing this girl cares about and comes before everything else. It tells you everything you need to know about her as a character. Also.. I don’t think Cal abused Nate as a child. I think what Marsha was talking about referred to Nate finding the tapes. That had such a profoundly negative impact on him that he changed completely. He watched them so many times and the fact that he saw Jules on them makes things even worse. He just has such a weird and toxic relationship with his father and watching those tapes traumatised him. He hates and despises him because of it, while at the same time feeling the need to life up to the expectations and hyper masculinity. He’s angry because of his father’s behaviour and what watching those tapes has done to him as a young child, but he also wants to stand up to him. Those images will never leave his mind. And I’m sure since he has feelings for Jules, those images are on his mind constantly, so no wonder he has nightmares about it. Nightmares that combine desires, fears and wild imaginings. I mean you can dream the weirdest fucking shit, it’s actually unreal. Am I the only one who had to think of reversed psychology during the conversation between Rue and her mum? I mean we don’t know that much about Leslie‘s character but it seems such a 180 turn from the end of last episode.. and what would be the point in saying those things to your own daughter? How is no one talking about that adorable interaction between Fez and Faye? 😂 She was so genuinely happy to be supportive and help him get ready. That smile on her face was so pure, I literally thought she was gonna kiss him at any second 😂 Absolutely adorable 💛

I don’t think the Cal and Nate’s scene is referring to Nate’s being SA, I think it’s about Nate’s perception of sex being forever changed by his father and his tendencies. I also think Nate compares himself with his father in everything, absolutely everything, and that he’s conscious of their similarities, I think he can see how he’s treating Cassie and how he treated Jules (they both appear in the scene) and can see that he’s behaving like his father did during sex but in his actual relationships. I believe that, maybe what changed him, was actually catching his father doing that in real life when he was younger. Or maybe the ages they said don’t really matter since people’s memories are not completely accurate and it wouldn’t be weird if he remembered watching those tapes at the wrong age.

I went back and did some research. In Nates story(s1e2), Nate was 11 when he found his dad’s videos. But momma Nate said his attitude changed when he was 8. I agree with what you said, maybe the nightmare Nate had was a reality for him at some point.

I don’t think Cal molested Nate. I think Nate got his sexual awakening from watching Cal’s dvds. It would then make sense (in a twisted way) for him to have sex dreams that include his father. It would also explain Nate’s hostility towards Cal. He knows his dad is a liar and a cheat, but is also possibly turned on watching his dad’s sexual conquests, and judging by the dream, possibly wanting to be one. That has to mess with his head.

  • @LifeFilmz

Yeah I don’t think his dad did that to him either. Cause Nate would’ve said that he did, he only said it was a recurring nightmare that he had as a kid. Which I think his brain was trying to make sense of the graphic videos and make sense of his feelings so his mind was just all over the place and traumatized. He really needed therapy at that point but no one knew what he was going through.

I agree that the Cal and Nate scene is metaphorical, Nate was sweet until he found his dad’s dvds, which is why everything changed. I think it reflects on how similar Cal and Nate are in how they treat their partners, as you see to Nate it’s a dream when he’s in the position of his dad. But when it’s reversed then it’s a nightmare, highlighting how hypocritical his behavior towards others especially his intimate partners is.

The thing about Cassie and Nate….I honestly think that Nate’s feelings for Cassie are honestly his misplaced feelings for Jules and Maddy . That’s why he doesn’t fully take Cassie as she is but manipulates her into the image of the two women he genuinely has feelings for aka Maddie and Jules . when he’s dressing Cassie it’s like present day Maddie and season 1 Jules .

Agreed, I think he only actually loves Jules, not even Maddie. He showed he had little respect or care for Maddie in the last episode. He showed Jules way more respect when he (1) apologized, (2) was honest about what his dad did and how he knows (3) giving her the disc, (4) saying he meant what he said in their texts from the previous season, then even waiting for her to go back inside her house. And he’s dreaming of her (hugging her & being in the position his dad put her in). I have a feeling Nate is mortified and won’t do anything to Lexi or even Ethan. I think the one that’s going to snap is Cassie.

I feel like the scenes where we see fez getting dressed is before the play even started. Throughout the play we see Lexi looking at the empty chair and at one point she says something along the lines of "having this feeling when something bad happens". Fast forward to the season finale promo we see fez screaming on the floor, blood on his tux, their house getting raided. So I think all of that is going on during the play. So I have a really bad feeling about how this is going to end😭😭😭

I don't think Cal molested Nate. I, at least, certainly hope that's not going to be the story line. It's an incredibly harmful stereotype that queer men are p*dophiles, molesters et cetera. Yes, we've seen that Cal's got an "appetite" for people who are too young for him, e.g. Jules... but it's still not the same as taking advantage of a literal child. My theory is that the thing that happened when Nate was 8-9 and what ultimately scarred him was him finding the CDs of his father, which was shown to us back in season one. I think the nightmare was meant to show us just how deeply scarred Nate still is by everything he's witnessed his father do. Also, I think Jules' role in the dream was to show us that Nate feels extreme guilt for everything both he and Cal have done to her and that Nate's still very much infatuated with her. We saw this in the last episode when he gave Jules the CD and confesses his feelings to her. I just really hope that Cal didn't molest Nate. It's such a harmful trope about queer men that's been done so many times on TV, already.

Nate's mother said he changed at that age and is true, but not cause he was abused by his father, they don't try to imply that, at that age he discovered the CD's if u remember so he has trauma, emotional trauma! That's why he has this nightmares, not cause he was actually abused by his father, is the emotional part because he saw those taps!

I think it says more about Marsha not remembering the correct age (she said herself '8 or 9' in last episode). Plus if I remember correctly, the 11 years old info came from Rue in Nates backstory and someone pointed out that Rue made many of the life-altering events in the backstories happen to the characters at age eleven (herself, Jules, Kat and Nate). Plus Rue is a self-acclaimed unreliable narrator.
