In most cases, people disagree confrontationally with other people not really because they want to defend their beliefs but because deep down in their minds they are concerned about seeing such beliefs coming to an end.

I think we also identify deeply with our beliefs. Our opinions are an extension of ourselves, so if you disagree with an opinion someone has, it is as if you are attacking them/their character. David Bohm explains it so much more eloquently in his book On Dialogue, which I highly recommend.

@@defamiliars I think you are very much right. The beliefs we carry are perceived as integral parts of our selves and, therefore parts of our personal sense of identity. The human brain is so heavily conditioned, conditioned at the neurological level, even generationally and culturally, to read everything that is even slightly sceptical about someone's beliefs as an affront and therefore as a life event that gets perceived as something very similar to a primal fear of a danger. Due to this conditioning, the brain reacts by producing responses at the level of sensory perception first, which then become emotional responses, then get verbalized intellectually and finally become behaviours/actions. If we were educated to capture the reaction generated by our conditioning as soon as it manifests itself in the brain at the level of sensory perception, all the rest of its ramifications would be significantly reduced or even completely interrupted. Consequently, the human interpersonal relationships and humanity in general would be quite different.

@@krox477 Precisely because of this reality you highlighted we should be prone to question our beliefs instead of defending them. By doing so we would understand what flaws or wrong premises our beliefs have. If there is a proper definition for wisdom, being willing to challenge our beliefs is the quintessence of wisdom.

Parents and schools should imprint their children with some "rules of disagreement", like; 1. Listen and respond with empathy (I understand your strong feelings...) 2. Check for understanding (what I'm hearing you say is...) 3. State what would change your mind, and ask what would change theirs (the evidence that would make me rethink my position...) ...which is better than being raised with emotional confirmation bias riddled anecdotes rife with strawmen, appeals to authority, and special pleading designed to passive aggressively gaslight, as I grew up with.

The reason people become aggressive during debates is due to our evolution. In our caveman days, the natural next step of a disagreement WAS fighting. The two are naturally linked behaviors. Whether they disagreed of who should get the first bite, who claims shelter, etc this would most likely have been resolved over an assertion of dominance or perhaps even fighting. Debates is simply an example of your body’s old evolutionary habits being mapped onto some behavior in the modern world just like your hear beat goes up when you take a test. Your body thinks the way to deal with stress is to elevate your heart rate to fight or flight as opposed to calming you down to think clearly and logically for the test. Your body thinks a debate is tied to a natural resource that you need to get ready to defend physically and therefore bring out your aggression.

@@yonaoismeIf claiming God exists is arrogant, saying God doesn’t exist is by the same measure equally arrogant. Humans simply do not have strong enough evidence to convince any skeptic. He should take his own advice for how to disagree with someone. For him to say "God doesn't exist and anyone who disagrees is delusion", is simply an arrogant statement. While it may be true that saying "God exists", is arrogant, saying "God does not exist" is equally arrogant.
