    Hi, thank you so much I get it more! But one question, I thought that the formal charge formula looks like: FC= #valance electrons -(#non-bonding + 1/2 bonding electrons) because that’s what I’ve been learning. So is the 1/2 not necessary? Thank you so much though !!!

    Hi melissa! This video was very helpful! But may I know in the 5th item in this practice problems? How will I know if I don't need to do a double bond? So it's okay to just add a lone pair in iodine?

  • @tashxrappos

    @tashxrappos

    3 жыл бұрын

    Two/three reasons janna, 1. If you add a double bond instead of the lone pair you won't have the 42 electrons that are needed for the compound, you will only have 40 - adding the lone pair will give you the extra two. 2. If a Fluorine atom were to have a double bond and 2 lone pairs (4 'single' electrons), it would have a total of 6 electrons, which would be 1 less than what it needs to be neutral, therefore it would have a formal charge of +1, which again is incorrect. 3. Much like with fluorine, if you add the double bond onto Iodine, that would only give 6 electrons, when Iodine needs 7 to be neutral, so it would have a formal charge of +1.

    For the last one, does OH need to be done the way she did it in lewis structure or are their other possibilities? Like having 3 H around N and an O on the right. The way it was written out kind of explains the way she did the lewis structure but I was just wondering if it's allowed to do it other ways or not.
